    In today's video, we come back on a complex mechanical development in watchmaking: the Resonance principle. This is something we had seen an example early this year at the SIHH with Armin Strom's very original and impressive take on this and we decided to go a bit deeper in the understanding of this physical phenomenon.
    We went back to Armin Strom and talked with Claude Gieser who explained to us their approach, but also some key elements in order to better understand it.
    Enjoy

    Armin Strom is one of my favorite watchbrands.
    I love their technical look and their innovative movements.

    It is lovely to see such innovations in place. It would be an improvement to society if these were available to the masses.

      Quantities produced are so small that it makes it really complicated to reproduce it at lower costs. thanks for your comment

    I’ve never been very attracted to skeleton styles, but the Resonance movement is fascinating, love the pendulum concept. The small dials give enough traditional look married with the beautiful and mesmerizing movement.

    I can't see that this watch is a true resonance set up if the balance wheels share a clutch spring. Both movements must be fully separate for resonance to have an effect.

  • @beck4218
    @beck4218 Před 3 lety

    Is the clutch spring made of titanium? I'd imagine as the fatigue cycles are inf. Love to see my namesake (Strom) doing this work.

    so someone in the last stage of development, raised their hand and said,, "ya know,, it looks great, but we need a big buck tooth at six o'clock". that'll make it perfect.

      Yes, I think that odd as well and more than a bit distracting. Otherwise, beautiful and I’m not normally a fan of skeletonized watches.

    how is the frequency secret? 😅 it’s pretty easy to figure it out with a working movement. (or is it?🤔)

    • @thomasboll9827
      @thomasboll9827 Před 6 lety

      I'd say that too, you can see if it beats 5 or 7 or more times a second :D

    Improved stability or signal from the balance is the narrative, but where is the data establishing benefit? I have yet to see any watch channel or manufacturer present hard data in support of any benefit to precision or accuracy. Without that hard data it is simply an impressively ornate demonstration of a phenomenon within a watch case. If the observatory trials were to return for mechanical movements, would implementing a resonant movement be a differentiator in taking top places?

  • @panulli4
    @panulli4 Před 6 lety +9

    The definition of resonance at the beginning is just wrong.
    Resonance occurs, when you periodically excite an oscillator with its own characteristic frequency.

    • @vorshaarkaar
      @vorshaarkaar Před 6 lety +4

      Sorry, but you're not correct: you are actually describing an external cyclic excitation. Resonance is indeed the interaction between two physical systems (usually, but not always, an object and a force. in this case it's two physical objects: the two balance wheels) at a specific frequency with a significantly higher output amplitude (orders of magnitude higher) than both systems have separately. The key here is getting a greater amplitude than what you put in, which helps maintain the cyclic movement as stable as possible (and as a consequence, maintain the accuracy of the watch)

    • @panulli4
      @panulli4 Před 6 lety

      Jon Mainhagu
      To be fair: You are completely right. I was actually only describing a special case of resonance and I could not have described the general case any better than you. So I take my hat off to you!
      BUT: The definition Mr Greisler gave is still just too vague to be valid (at least not in this universe). Two bodies can influence each other in all kinds of ways, so his definition has nothing to do with oscillations or resonance in particular.

    • @vorshaarkaar
      @vorshaarkaar Před 6 lety +2

      you are 100% correct! I also though the explanation for the physical phenomenon is way too vague to be considered accurate. I did enjoy this video, though. As the other comment noted, it is harder to be precise in a second (or third) language. My hat's off to you for giving such a reasoned and balanced reply! CZcams CAN be a place for constructive exchanges... or maybe it's only on theWATCHES.tv :-)

    • @kolokolok
      @kolokolok Před 6 lety

      Jon Mainhagu could you please explain the term 'amplitude' in layman's terms as I have no understanding of physics whatsoever. Also, you mentioned 'object and force' - can you add another example of this scenario for the poor layman? Thanks!
