The Picocart64 | Better than the Everdrive?

  • This aliexpress DIY flash cart for the N64 is cheap and handy.
    Compared to the Everdrive 64 from Krizz, this Pico-powered device can only be loaded with one game at a time. However, with its cheap, and accessible price tag, lets you access a ton of games and features.

    i do own a everdrive and a cheaper aliexpress version but as soon as i read ". Only one game can be burned at a time" they lost me its cool to see the pico still being used for so many things but having to load the roms 1 at a time is painful

    • @DReviewTing
      @DReviewTing  Před 28 dny +7

      Aye, its biggest limitation is space. Which is a bummer, but still able to do some cool things for so cheap. I like the everdrive, but the asking price is preposterous. I'll be looking in to the SummerCart64 next.

      @@DReviewTing i know you can get sd card reader modules that sit on top of the picopi as i have used them in the psx memcard project. im guessing in the future it might be expanded to allow us to do that but i think for it to work correctly it needs some kind of nand to temp write the rom to thats normally how the everdrive's and stuff handle multi roms and the picopie just doesnt have the space as you said.

      You're comparing a Rolex to a Timex. The price difference is the biggest feature.

      @@DReviewTing Why not use some SRAM to create a buffer the roms load from? Allow them to be pulled from an external source and be written to the SRAM, which is then mapped to the addresses used by the N64 with the Pico acting just to translate them from 2x256mb SRAM chips into the N64's address space?

    If this can be made to stream data over USB without removing the cartridge from the N64 or turning off the console, this could be the perfect budget N64 homebrew dev tool.

    is'n portal bigger than the 16MB ? ho did you manage to get it on the cart ? (also they should have added a sd slot and PSRM for quick loading into psram from SD)

    • @DReviewTing
      @DReviewTing  Před 28 dny

      That is actually a very valid point! I didn't even look at file sizes when flashing. Portal is 22mb, and even DBZKart is 25mb! I'll have to look in to that a bit further. Unless when the uf2 is converted, it is able to reduce the size further maybe?
      I agree, an SD card reader would be absolutely sick! The biggest issues for me is both capacity, and saving.

    • @Nicky_T
      @Nicky_T Před 8 dny

      @@DReviewTing I've flash nuked it, flashed the ntsc uf2, power cycled, and flashed the test uf2 and nothing. I've been working on it for a couple hours now. I did manage to find a uf2 file online named picocart64.uf2 (which wasn't included in the github repo, but found it in another youtube video's links) and it worked. Seems to be an old test rom? That is the only thing that's worked at all, no matter what I do other than that one premade uf2 it doesn't work. I know the board is just fine because that picocart64.uf2 worked with it and gave good video output and stuff on the n64, and I even tried micropython and other pi pico stuff and it works, but for some reason any real rom just doesn't work. Any idea? thanks!
