  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was revealed at the xbox showcase as Sandfall Interactive's debut game. It's a UE5 turn-based RPG with a Belle Époque inspired art style. Many who saw the reveal trailer opined that its stylized turn-based combat is what Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth's combat should have been.

I love your analysis of the trailer and the nature of turn based in a hyper realistic stylized setting, very enlightening why this type of combat couldn't work in modern Final Fantasy. And i hadn't thought of that before why Turn based is more cartoony in graphics these days. So something to think about but I cannot wait for this game, EX33 might just finally prove Stylized Hyper Realistic games can be turn based and be good.

@@Astreon123 wow aggressive opinion, have you actually played a Turn based or Active Turn based Final Fantasy before?

for what its worth, i played the og paper mario and i never got bored from doing the quick time prompts it offers, its like jumping in a platformer, you just get used to the input (undertale seems to have the same attack timing prompt as this and the same applies there)

I would say what FF15's combat should have been. Because this game feels like what FF15 kinda is. Melancholic dramatic theme, dark high fantasy setting, cinematic art and narrative style. Just with experimental turnbased combat. FF13 had a lot of problems, but it still followed that line of turnbasey style with cinematic hyperrealism. So FF15 would have been a great successor with this turnbased style.

Expedition 33 is what FF17 should be: realistic, fantastic and turn based.

Looks more like a updated Legend of dragoon combat system rather than FFX.

Love your take on this, and your defense on FFXVI/VIIR's gameplay. I just can't imagine a Bahamut fight where I sat in one place and attacked him in a turn based world.

@@Astreon123 Eh... if beating up kids is up your alley then sure... from what I've seen enemies are so easy they might as well be little kids that have been given a sword and told go fight that final boss. Enemies for the most part seem very lame as well... they got the main character right for sure, now just need to get every other hostile character right as well.

I agree that FF7R and Rebirth and FF16 should've had this type of combat system, and then they would've been better recognized and received

If the rumors of an FF9 Remake are true I sincerely hope Square looks to this game for inspiration on the combat system.
7 Remake & Rebirth have exceptional combat systems that I would never change for the world.
16's combat is excellent if you take full advantage of the eikon abilities given to you, but I agree that it's nit for everyone

Why do yall act like final fantasy was EVER special for being turn based? 16 has way better combat than any game in the series yall just need to go for combos instead of the same lame ass diamond dust lvl 5 zan combl
