5:25 Piccolo was raising his power level/ battle ki which I'm sure you've seen plenty of times in Z and Super. That's why he was able to easily defeat Goku after the fact.
The Zenkai boost, which allows Saiyans to grow stronger after recovering from near death experiences didn't happen until DBZ so it had not been created yet at that time. Also King Piccolo was powering up after getting knocked down by Goku so that's why Goku wasn't able to move because he was being pushed back by the force of his energy. A technique i'm sure you have seen multiple times throughout DBZ and Super.

And this is the reason why Roshi fears Piccolo so much. This is a weak and old Piccolo and you have seen what he did to Goku who was the strongest character up until now 😅
And no. Piccolo just held back in the beginning. When he started to take Goku seriously, Goku never even landed a hit.
Goku was completely outmatched from the start.
Looking back at it, I'm not sure about holding back.
Goku got the weighted clothes from Kami, who gave them to him for both training and defensive purposes. King Piccolo used to share a consciousnes with Kami and powers up the moment he takes off his Robe.
Coincidence? Oh, most certainly. But it fits nontheless ;)

Dude, it wasn't overconfidence on Goku's part or him dropping his guard. Piccolo was literally just miles ahead of him in terms of skill once he got serious. Goku is just comparatively that weak to an elder Piccolo. You're in your denial phase like you did with Zuko again. Goku just needs to level up a bit 😅

Goku had no chance the hit goku got on piccolo was just because he let him, or rather to see how strong he is
The whole concept of the Kamehameha was that it uses all the users energy so if Gokus gassed the attack isn’t gonna be nearly as strong as it would if he wasn’t getting his ass whooped. Also Zenkai boosts were kinda written around the idea that Goku got stronger with ever time he fought
So strong a punch it even ended the theme. XD

I’m so happy that Ani is able exactly point out how King Piccolo is able to beat Goku. If Piccolo had his youth he actually would’ve killed Goku. And even though King Piccolo was stronger and faster Piccolo was still old so he used his size and technique to his advantage.

Technically Goku is a human, just not an earthling. Saiyans are a race, not a species.
Nah. Goku is a human, at this point. There is no alien warrior narrative retcon until the next series. He's just a weird, feral kid with a tail in world based on mythology more than science fiction. Tien has three eyes and is human, Chiaotzu is a human based on Chinese vampire lore, there's animal men all over the place...

No, not really XD that isn't thought up until the Saiyan stuff. Retroactively later on they say "yeah he always got stronger after being beaten due to being a Saiyan" when that...pretty much never was implied to happen. He always seemed to get stronger from training or getting more mystically enhanced prior to them making that up once the Saiyans are introduced.
It may not have been intended, but it explains some of the leaps in power Goku has throughout this series. Otherwise, Goku shouldn't be any stronger than Tien.

Yeah, the pattern here is to show a new fighter, show their strength, and then have Goku grow to overcome.
I hate to repeat what everyone else has said, but King piccolo was way stronger then Goku from the start. I'm not saying King piccolo wasn't using strategy, I'm just saying he was using strategy on top of the fact that he's way stronger than goku. Goku didn't stand a chance in this fight, but continue watching . . . .

Funny you mention 108 episodes, because 108 happens to have symbolism in Buddhism.
No, Goku gets nearly killed, and the things he learned is not going to help against piccolo despite his old age, his power is on a whole other level. Roshi and Tien will encounter piccolo later in terms of the dragon balls while yajorobi helps Goku so the events occur separately, remember that master roshi don't know if Goku is still alive while Tien and chaoztu assist him and yes Goku getting stronger do apply but in terms of world building as events play out unexpectedly as none of the characters except for roshi and grandpa Gohan knew the secret to Goku's strength and his ability to adapt until DBZ

I wish there was a bit more of a even Struggle in the middlepart, because how it is its just a onesided Bestdown, and that was allways a bit of a weakness of DBZ later on.
And yeah only one, or two Episodes and you see what I am hyped foooooor!

@@She-Devil94 Zenkai boost has not been conceived as the 'go to' MacGuffin in Toriyama's toolset yet. To be honest, what is pulled in this arc wished it could have had the narrative synergy that Goku's resilience has with the concept of a Zenkai boost. Again, this arc is proto-DBZ, first one to introduce elements that will have their refined version in DBZ.
