The original actor that played Danny in The Shining makes a cameo appearance as one of the dads in the kid's baseball game which I thought was pretty cool!

Yeah, the Dr. Sleep book is a direct continuation of The Shining book, but when it came time to make the movie it was obvious they had two artistic mediums to blend, regardless of how Stephen King felt (feels) about Kubrick’s vision.

I just LOVE this movie! WAY more than the original Shining......
Mike Flanagan is a great director. He had the balls to do a sequel to a Stanley Kubrick movie. And he made it good. So that's already a great achievement in his career for him.
He never dissapointed me to this day. Love his work. Even Geralds game, a book i thought to be unfilmable, was great.
I'm sure you've seen The Haunting Of Hill House on Netflix if you're a fan of Flanagan. If not, check it out. I prefer the 1st season but both are really well done! 👌

Honestly, I think, Gerald´s Game might even be my favorite of his work. SO rewatchable, because it´s so simple, yet in a way also transcending. But Doctor Sleep may come in as a definitely close second. Even Hush was good, although a bit formulaic, but I gotta admit, I even have a soft spot for his early work like Oculus. SUCH an underrated thriller. I became a massive fan, because it was Karen Gillan´s first role after leaving Doctor Who, I believe. And I´m a massive Whovian.........
Regarding the ending, the plot section on Wikipedia had this: "As her mother leaves the room, Abra notices the ghost of the rotting woman from the Overlook in the bathroom and prepares to imprison her just as Danny did."
The whole theatre was cheering and clapping when rose got what came to her by the overlook ghosts
The mark of a great villain when it's so satisfying every time she gets outsmarted.
While Rose the Hat isn't the most powerful antagonist, that's kind of what makes her interesting. You get the impression that she's diminished over time; if we'd met her a couple of hundred years ago she'd have been an awesomely powerful being, but she hasn't "eaten well" in a long time and she's a shadow of her former self. That's part of the reason she's so drawn to Abra, who reminds her of the way she used to be (i.e. "the only difference between us is time"). It's not just about stealing Abra's power or using her for food, it's about Rose trying to reclaim her glory days.

The baseball boy scene in theaters was fucking INTENSE. I don't think anyone expected it. I was so utterly unnerved and shocked, and I'm someone who's normally desensitized to violence in horror. Jacob Tremblay (the kid actor) is beyond his years and Rebecca Ferguson is PHENOMENAL!

Well the thing is people hate seeing children hurt or killed on screen and I think most of us have retained all those high-profile child abduction and murder cases on the news. It was huge back in 2002 and a very scary time.
I've watched hundreds and hundreds of horror movies without flinching and I can't watch that scene again. Child torture is unbearable.
I've only read the book and seen this reaction. The only other time I was that disturbed by a depiction of violence in a book was when I read American Psycho, and that freaked me out and disgusted me so much I threw it out the window.
Absolutely agree! At first, I didn´t even know, that the cute little boy, who I loved so much already in Room, was now the Baseball Boy. And I think, it´s literally the only criticism, I have for this film, that he repeated the lines from the pusher verbatim. I think, audiences would have been smart enough to understand, if he had just reacted with "Okay..." or so....
But yeah, that killing scene was intense, man. Would have loved to experience that in the theater...

In defense of the flashbacks; I think if they'd combined original footage with the new stuff it would have been too jarring. They could have used CGI but that's often distracting and even unintentionally funny at times, so they went with actors who captured the tone, voices, and overall spirit of the original characters rather than dead ringers. Considering how limited their screen time is, I think it was the right choice for this movie.
I agree. The flashbacks are necessary to bridge the two films, and I actually think it would have been more disrespectful to try to recreate dead/retired actors with cgi, as opposed to simply giving the roles to new actors.

I don't get why he didn't like it? I thought the actors did so fucking amazing with the mannerisms and tones of the original characters. I was in shock how well she did Shelley Duvall. The casting and acting is the best I've ever seen when trying to recreated a character from an older film. It was outstanding and one of the high points for me. I don't understand why he would be bitching about it.

The performance by Jacob Tremblay (the baseball boy) is so powerful it rocked me to the core. I've never seen a little kid give that kind of performance since The Exorcist. The behind the scenes interviews talked about how the first take was so good but the director couldn't use any of the shots of The Knot group because they were all too shaken and looked terrified and heartbroken rather than excited to be killing this boy.
This part is so horribly described in the book.

34:05 In the novel 'The Shining' the old lady in the bath was just someone who committed suicide in the bath. It was the hotel that distorted the picture so to speak. Abra at the end recognizes that she just wanted someone to talk to, so she isn't scared of her unlike Jack Nicholson, et al.
The ending was how The Shining was supposed to end. Blowing up the boiler and let the hotel burn.

I know some didn't care for the recreated past scenes, but they were necessary to show Halloran explaining the boxes to Danny.

Its called homage and and the actors they used did a great job recreating those scenes and new material with the subtle nuances of Shelley Duvall and Jack Nicholson's performances in the original. I do like your idea as well. Very clever. (The negative nancys are wrong)

Really liked this movie. I found the friendship between Dan and Billy really touching as well... Billy was such a good mate.
Underrated actor and a great character to remember
The scene when Abra trapped rose, it was so satisfying. Her death scene was a smile worthy moment.
Agreed, I love how they allowed the protagonists so many more empowering moments than the usual three seconds of "eat this, bitch" at the end of a horror movie, after two hours of nothing but fear and torment and hopelessness. It's so satisfying to watch our heroes hunt down a gang of smug child killers.

I love that they swapped in the ending to the novel of The Shining as the ending to this film.
Yeah, I actually like the ending to the film better than the ending to the book. It's an excellent blending of the book, the book version of The Shining, and the film version of The Shining. Flanagan did a damn good job weaving it all together, to the point that even Stephen King said it made him feel better about Kubrick's film.

I remember so well being in the cinema watching this with my now Ex Boyfriend, and when the scene came along with the baseball kid being stabbed over and over and over again there was like 5+ people who walked out...By the end there was maybe 20 people out of 50 left. Not even kidding
The Baseball Boy was so good at acting in pain, after several takes the other actors had to stop, to ensure he was OK, and because they were crying from his screams!
Jacob Tremblay is definitely something special when it comes to child actors. He was staggeringly good in 'Room' as well.
I love how he was giving his dad high fives while the adults are just bawling.
They didn't have the rights to use original footage from "The Shining". Jack Torrence is portrayed by Henry Thomas btw., the dad from "The Haunting Of Hill House", which makes it two actors from that show. But to me he'll always be Elliott from "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial". Saw that one at the cinema as a kid, that's probably why I just can't help it... 😂
Henry Thomas also played a young Norman Bates in one to the Psycho sequels. I'm really happy to see him working more again!

He did great as Jack here. Loved this movie and the book is phenomenal as well.

The scene with Jack/Lloyd and Danny at the bar was amazing. And even if he doesn't look 100% like Jack Nicholson I'm glad they got a good lookalike instead of cheap CGI.

Danny used to be 'Abra-strong', but the True Knot didn't notice him. I always wondered if it was because Danny denied his powers or because he dissociated his powers from himself in his mind using Tony. Or, worst of all possibilities, the Overlook hid/shielded him because it wanted to eat him.
Halloran helped hide him as well.
Danny was very strong. But not as strong as Abra. Even when young. He was VERY strong. She is just stronger. Neither Danny nor Rose are strong enough to produce physical effects. Abra is.
It's Mike Flanagan! I LOVE his horror point of view so much (Same director as Hill House.) He works with the same actors over and over again which is why you see familiar faces pop up.
Have you seen Gerald's Game? It's also based on King's book and it's a great faithful adaptation and imo one of the best horrors or the last decade. Carla Gugino in the main role was phenomenal. I love how Mike Flanagan tends to work with the same people. I can't really explain why, but it feels like he's creating his own cinematic universe because his movies always share at least some of the actors and it's great. :D
Doctor Sleep is to The Shining what Blade Runner 2049 is to Blade Runner '82, in that they both somehow managed to capture the tone and feel of the originals while still doing something completely different instead of just trying to rehash or imitate, which to me is the mark of a truly excellent sequel. The Shining and Blade Runner are two of my all-time favorite films, so I was so stoked that both sequels are so excellent. So glad you guys seem to agree.

I think that's as much of a blessing as it is a curse though, in that had they been wildly successful right away we almost certainly would have been inundated with a parade of inferior sequels that would have eventually diminished the impact of the originals.

Yes, Stephen King actually confirmed that this was his first inspiration for the book.
I saw this in the theater and was sitting next to an 8-year-old. My husband and I were gobsmacked during the murder scene and I almost had to sit on my own hands to keep myself from covering that child's eyes. We were traumatized and I can only imagine how that scene played to someone near the same age as that poor baby.
It was hard for Rose's actress Rebecca Ferguson to film as well.

Idk I was always that kid in the theater in every horror movie. I was never traumatized by anything lol. The first horror movie I ever saw was The Last House on the Left (1972).

The overlook hotel is like it's own entity that the ghost are tied too, but the sports can exist on their own. I loved this movie so much and Rose The Hat, as much as she was evil was pretty human. And I thought that was a nice change from most movies and even the Shining, where the villain is this twisted inhuman force. She was scared of death and addicted.

I got to go to the advanced screening of this in Toronto and got to meet the main actress as well as the director Mike Flannagan (who I am a MASSIVE fan of - I mean, Haunting of Hill House alone is brilliant), AND his wife, Kate Siegel (who, again, I am also a massive fan of), and they were all SUPER NICE. I was also dressed up as Victor Pascow from Pet Semetary at the time, so that was fun.
I had no idea he was married to Katie Siegel. She's great. That's awesome.
I think Mike Flanagan is a great director. I look forward to whatever he does next.

I'm gonna be one of the few and say that I LOVED the way they recreated the scenes from "The Shining" and I LOVED that they didn't use CGI and relied solely on make-up and actors. When I watched it I literally gasped because of how amazing these scenes looked and how well-acted they were, I would even say that they were one of my favourite parts of the film. Mike Flanagan and his crew did a tremendous job.
the main reason they got a different cast is because it's 40 YEARS LATER, the real danny boy is in the film as one of the spectators at the baseball match, also Shelley Duvall & Jack Nicholson are 40 years older

In the book it was explained, the more those shine/steam eaters tortured the kids, the more the kids released their shine while they were dying.
The scene with them murdering the little boy was so distressing to me when I saw it in the cinema on opening night.. Id to close my eyes and block my ears to the crying and screaming, I had tears. Fucked up man...
The adult actors had to take a break from the scene as well because the young boy was such good actor
STRONGLY recommend the director's cut of Doctor Sleep. I know, I know its so confusing which version of a movie to watch, but the extra 30 minutes makes an already exceptional movie even better.
Yall said it looked cartoonish the way the replicated the shining, but i think its the exact opposite. The love and attention to detail they put into the scenes in the overlook was actually breathtaking. They put a lot of work into it.
McGregor and friends have been doing a television series where they ride motorcycles around the world (long rides). They just did "Long Way Up". That's probably the reason you don't see him a lot. My husband loves that series.

They used different actors for the flashbacks because they showed Danny and Wendy after the events of the Overlook.
This movie is so Mike Flanagan. The moment I saw the hotel it instantly reminded me of Hill House. "I gotta wake it up". Just the whole tone and feel is incredibly recognizable
I can't begin to explain how much I love this movie. They did such a fantastic job too. So many amazing actors, like Lurch from The Addams Family and Bully from Once Were Warriors to Mr Dudley and Little Nell. The murder scene of Bradley actually brought the cast to tears while they were trying to film it. Rose (Rebecca) was crying and they had to do a whole bunch of editing because they were all crying during his performance. They all said they felt traumatized afterwards and I don't blame them. Gut wrenching scene to watch. I was shocked by the brutality of it but I understand WHY they included it. So glad Dick Hallorann was in it. So pissed they killed him in the "original" movie. He wasn't suppose to die. And I'm so happy you caught the same shot they did in the first movie when they went back to the Overlook! I could go on and on about all the easter eggs but this is already a novel so I'll say one last thing, I fucking LOVE this film. xD
Both The Shinning and Dr. Sleep draw heavy from King's journey through addiction. Jack's whiteknuckling sobriety and eventual relapse and Danny's work on himself in later life and the ability to resist temptation.
That and Misery - King has said that Misery is about his recovery from addiction.
You should've watched the director's cut 😭 but otherwise great reaction! The theatrical cut is still solid but the pacing of the other cut is much better imo.
I actually felt some scenes ran to long in the director's cut. I think it was smart to start with this version.
I just love Mike Flanagan. He has such a unique directing style that is immediately recognizable.
Mike Flanagan basically got Stephen King on board by promising to meld King's version of The Shining with Kubrick's. In the novel Doctor Sleep, the Overlook isn't even standing anymore. So Flanagan got King to agree to featuring the Overlook as everyone knows it from the Kubrick movie, but then King finally got to see the original ending he had always wanted - Torrance blowing the boiler. A brilliant balancing act that worked so well, in my opinion.

I love the Hill House actors in this - the little girl Violet at the beginning, and the Dad from Hill House as Jack Torrance. The line "A man takes a drink, the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes a man" is such a winner.

The overlook was burned down in the shining book, so it burning down here was meant to pay homage to that and/or bring it full circle while trying to simultaneously make it a faithful adaptation of the book and the movie, an impossible task handled beautifully. also fun fact, elliot from ET was the one who played fake jack torrence.
I saw this in the theatre and loved it, I was shocked that Danny died in The Overlook but it was a fitting ending.
This director also adapted Gerald's Game, Another King book and amazing movie. Hope you can watch it in a future video

Great review. Once you read the books, you will appreciate this adaptation even more. Mike Flanagan had a tough job marrying aspects from Kubrick’s film and the two novels and in the end he pulled it off damn near perfectly, honoring all of them.
Mike Flanagan had the impossible task of paying homage to both the original Shining book and movie, which saw Kubrick change key pieces from the book to the movie.
Doctor Sleep (the book) was a sequel to The Shining (the book) and despite some major differences that Kubrick made to The Shining, Mike made it work. One of my friends actually designed the rework of The Overlook Hotel and thought it looked incredible.
TRIVIA: The actor who played the Baseball boy who was tortured to death - was so realistic with his screaming and acting that he freaked out the other actors and the director during the scene, but as soon as the director would yell cut, the boy actor would hop right up, high five his dad and they'd head over the catering table for milk and cookies like nothing happened.
As a fan of The Shining and a fan of the book Doctor Sleep I really enjoyed how it was loyal to King’s book but also huge nods to Kubrick’s The Shining, which King absolutely hated.
McGregor was fantastic, all the cast were great for that matter, the scene with the true knot killing the baseball kid was truly haunting. Terrifying without showing any gore. All implied. Very powerful. Great film
I’ve been watching since the werewolf movie, but forgot how many that was. still, I consider myself pretty special being here since then. you two have grown so much. I’m actually really broke, so I won’t be able to get that hoodie, but I’ll always consider myself as one of the first.
The director of this did a fantastic job of mimicking kubrick when it was needed. I really didn't expect anything good when I heard about this and was pleasantly surprised

My favourite movie of 2019. Mike Flanagan did an outstanding job with this. I was blown away with it. It would've been more jarring to use the footage from the original only to then cut to the new actors. I thought the woman playing Wendy was incredible, she really captured Shelly Duvall's performance perfectly. They actually rebuilt the Overlook Hotel set using the designs/blueprints from Kubricks film. It was such a hard line to tread and I think they handled it perfectly. Fantastic characters too.

I really think this movie is so underrated since it didn’t do too well at the box office (although to be fair it was a January movie)... Probably in part due to the title being completely different, but I’m glad the studio didn’t call it something like The Shining 2 lmao
Dunno if you realized a few of the actors from The Haunting of Hill House were in this? You noticed the little girl in the beginning, she played young Nell. Then the chubby dude steam sucker in the van who speaks to the baseball boy, he was the caretaker husband in HH. The bartender is Henry Thomas, the young dad in HH and also the uncle in Bly Manor. All 3 of them are directed by Mike Flanagan. Mike Flanagan is married to the actress who played the sister Theo in Hill House (actress Kate Siegel) and she stars in a good horror movie called Hush... also directed by Flanagan lol ✌🏻

I usually do not like sequels and didn’t think it was going to be good. I was pleasantly surprised and loved the film. Giving an homage to Stephen King‘s original book was fantastic!
The source of the power of the Overlook was the violated spirits of the Native American burial ground upon which it was built. The hotel itself became the vehicle for focusing the spirits and the "shine" to those who were sensitive to it. I think that the spirits, once freed from the shell of the Overlook, were free to search and find a soul they recognized, Abbra's, due to her exposure to them and the burial ground. Energy is neither created nor destroyed, it changes form. I think the idea here is that it applies to psychic energy too.
Lads not even lying got done watching my first viewing of Doctor Sleep only to hop on CZcams straight after to see you guys uploaded a movie reaction to DOCTOR SLEEP. Blew my mind and I swear to god the biggest coincidence ever.
The reason I believe the spirits still hang around, is because in the original they mentioned the hotel being built on an ancient burial ground.
I was completely ok with the Shining recreation towards the end. I think the film earnt it, it's a really great sequel.

Henry Thomas (played the young dad in Hill House and Jack Torrance/Bar Tender in Dr Sleep), Robert Longstreet (Mr Dudly/caretaker in Hill House and Barry the Chunk/van driver in Dr Sleep), and Katie Parker (Poppy Hill in Hill House and Silent Sarey/an other in Dr Sleep). I didnt like the 'without patreon' comment. Merch through t-spring costs nil to set up and is absolutely possible without sponsors. Fair play the actual selection and designs look good... if kinda expensive though.

This for me is a perfect follow up.
I think the actors they bought in to replace Dick Halloran and Wendy Torrance were superb. The Directors didn't want to use original footage or deep faking as it would be too much of the "Uncanny Valley".
The best scene for me was Danny talking to his Dad (Lloyd) who was now Lloyd the Barman like Delbert Grady the previous caretaker was now a Butler.
Absolutely stunning film.
So they actually did something really interesting with the end of this movie. I don't know if you two got around to reading the books, but the way Doctor Sleep's movie ends is the way the Shining's book ends. Kubrick's adaptation of the Shining was so inaccurate that Doctor Sleep basically had to rewrite the entire ending to tie it all in right.
As far as sequels go, this is one of the best. Up until the Overlook Hotel it was already great but bringing it back there turned it up to 11. Also, this movie has fantastic performances and cinematography. Love it!
BTW, the theme is "Dies Irae." It's used, inverted, etc. in Sweeney Todd. It's meant to depict coming death/doom.

I think the film HAD to recreate the scenes from The original Shining because this movie had the responsibility of standing as a sequel to the original movie, a sequel to the Shining novel AND a true adaptation to the Doctor Sleep novel. Which was incredibly daunting because how many movies have had to do that? It couldn't directly pull footage because it had to be somewhat different in order to avoid being a direct sequel to just 1 of it's source materials when it needed to be an extension of the world. The speech that Danny makes after eight years sober in which he dedicates to his father just shows the 'true knot' (if you will) to ALL the source materials. Jack wasn't the villain, it was the hotel manipulating him. They took the ending of the original Shining novel and applied it to this film because Kubrick had changed it. It was so satisfying.

As someone who is a huge fan of the book I put off watching Doctor Sleep, as I didn't want to be disappointed. Seeing that you were reacting to it, I watched it last night and have to say I really enjoyed it, while there are several differences, they do make sense in the continuation of the movie - like you pointed out, was a bit upset by the recasting/reshooting of scenes from the original, but it is what it is - also The hat lady, her accent seemed to change from scene to scene.
100% recommend reading both of the books.
The spirits from the hotel are able to track people with the shining, just like Rose the Hat was able to track Abra.
I liked it. For a plot continuity, I think this movie follows up on both King's and Kubrick's versions. Obviously the setting is Kubrick, but King got his theme of alcoholism, and the last laugh. He wanted Mr Torrance and the Hotel to die at the end. The good thing is that since the Hotel no longer exists, Danny won't be trapped there, and everyone else has also possibly been liberated.
