I like this review. I like-it-a-loh ;) Going for a test ride on a Speed tomorrow. Looking at the 94 SE here in Aus. Hope the step up from my Street is not too awkward.
55 tickets thats amazing ...here in NZ they will cancel your licence for 3 months if you get to 100 points in two years (up to 10k over 10 points, up to 20k over 20 points etc) so 5 tickets for 11k over in 2 years will mean loosing it for 3 months. After 2 years though , points drop off for each ticket...but if you are on say 90 points and you ask for a court hearing ( delay tactics) your can normally get enough delay for an older one or two to be deleted. dropping your points back. Speed camera tickets don't attract points though, just a fine
Freespiritphil I used to work for a law firm that did collections on motor vehicle surcharges. Amazingly there were some people (only a few out of thousands of people) who owed upwards of $15,000 in fines. Yes, 15 Gs...in fines...money they have to pay out and will never get anything in return for it.
" . . . . I pay alot of money to the state..." bwa hahahahahahahahaha Outstanding. I bought a used 2005 R1200RT last year. They are awesome machines. I test drove the new boxer R1200RT (2015). Absolutely incredible . . . just couldn't afford to buy it new. :-(
My 2012 R1200R is going in for service next Sat so will ask to test ride this bike. I love the look and I've been a fan of the boxer engine for a long while now. Only thing is I'd not want the shift assist but do want the other options in the Premium Pkg but one has to take Shift Assist which I think sucks.
How does the riding position compare between this and the RnineT? Is the R1200R noticeably more upright then the RNineT and R1200RS? I had the RnineT but need something more friendly to hauling my GF around.
Cal, nice review, took out the r1200r out today, ran out of time, did not take the rs out, do u find the rs handlebars a little more forward lean? not much difference in price, depending on what package u get.
Thanks I am trying to find the balance between wind protection, fun, and occasional comfort for my wife on the back. I am hoping the R with a decent windscreen will fit the bill. The RT just seems bloated, and the RS's snout is just too Japanese sport bike ish.
I have been riding a harley dyna with apes. I got tired of these ugly dragon fly looking bikes blowing past me as I struggled with the wind and consentrated hard on keeping the bike together in the twisties, So I found a guy on Craigslist selling a 2006 R1200GS. I took it for a test ride. I instantly began to smile as the bike did all the work. Needless to say the bike is now sitting my garage next to my harley. The BMW acts as if the harley doesn't exist as the harley threatens to kick its ass. I have to say I hate to sell the harley because there is nothing like the rumbling of heritage Americana between your legs. She is so cool. But that said, I really like to ride and performance is a must and this bike has that.
+Bill Tomasetti I have a K12RS and a street glide. Love mt '57 Chevy of a bike and can't imagine giving it up...But boy there's a reason the K's are called flying bricks. Harley has actually been way more reliable. The 14 yr old K is still faster than the '16 R12RS.
I like the way the R looks more too but the RS seems right on the sweet spot. Looks like you've been riding for a while, I've never seen anyone leave the dealer on a sport bike going moto style over the curb lol
Regarding comfort. How would expect the forward leaning position on the RS (vs the more upright RT ) to effect your body over long distances ? Does the fairing direct the wind over the top of your helmet ? How big is the protection bubble vs the RT ?
Todd Claussen For me the position is perfect; that said, I'm not a long distance rider. The protection suits me, but I'm not used to protection. I will say that nothing competes with the RT in that category. I like the RS for my more aggressive riding style.
I tried sitting on one at a show. The ergos were weird. The R1200R is nice. The R1200GS is nice. This...the reach over the tank was way too long. If I was going to get stuck in that position I'd just get a sport bike. The only person I can imagine wants this is someone with a hard on for a boxer twin sport bike. Apparently that person has a lot of money, too.
Tested one today. Ok bike, but didn't feel it was worth the 18k list price. Dives a lot under hard braking. Handled nice, no buffeting with manual operated screen. Speed shift was nice, thought it slammed into gear hard on the upshifts though. Fun, but not 18k fun.
Calmoto: I'm trying to choose between the RS and the GS...any thoughts? I'm not really planning on doing any heavy duty off roading but an occasional dirt road. Mostly touring and commuting.
The main reason I gave up BMW (Boxer) ownership was the high cost of ownership per mile. Aside from the thousand dollar "major maintenance" schedules I also had wonky tire wear issues. God help me if anything actually broke, I'd just give Otto my credit card, sell off my assets and return in a week to find out when I could pick up the bike. Not to say they're not sweet rides, but they're not for the light of wallet. I've owned three new bikes since my last Beemer and the cost per mile - for all three bikes - has been less than the one BMW. Just my experience, or common - I don't know.
I think BMW have made a mistake with the instruments, the rev counter should be the analogue dial, if only because it looks better. The speedo should be digital, I'm sure a lot of BMW's market is a little on the mature side, and chances are they find the speedo hard to read. It would also make financial sense to do it the other way round, they would only need one part for metric or Imperial speedometer as digital displays can easily be switched between the two.
+Cal Moto we have to in the UK, there are speed cameras everywhere and if we get more than 12 points out licence is taken away

No manufacturer ever puts cruise controll on their bikes so that you can take both hands off the bar. Motorcycles are to be riden with both hands on the bar,,, thus every manufacturer innovation is made towards the goal so that the rider can handle everything while holding the bar with both hands.
Already watched a couple vids on the 1000; awesome bike, but the boxer engine is the key feature that draws me to the BMW. Want something with more power, ABS, that still has the power curve of a 2cyl. Riding a Harley now.
Indeed, best-lookin' bike BMW has put out in long time...didn't get a chance to sit on one back in October when I was last at a dealership in Austin because they(obviously) were sold-out of them and had a half-dozen on order. Really want to turn my Sportster into a hard-tailed barhopper and get a GS for out-of-town riding.
Před 8 lety
+scrambler350 have u riden 'em? there's a clear difference, espicially with the older GS-s has longer forks and different angle + older GS-s got higher seat,,, I heard they've taken out two different sizes of the new GS-s !! Any year of GS is best for grand tourismo as long as you keep it on solid road. You'd better not try this 530 pounds lady in the mud. :)
Yea,... cool review but Id like to add that Jesus is a grown man. And he will be coming back as a bad ass, most people don't think o f him that way but its truth. peace out dude.
Sure there's nothing wrong with 125hp (I have less), but what surprises me is the need of 1200cc's to achieve that. How does this bike go on fuel compared to middleweights?
+fred nouvertne Same here. I have a 2012 R1200R and it has just under 26K miles on it and it has been flawless (knocking on wood). All I've done is recommended servicing. What bike do you have?
My first BMW was a 1992 K75. Not very high tech but built to last. Next one a 1995 R1100GS was fantastic introduction to new tech. Chassis superb. Motor not so good. Fuel injection glitches. BMW denied it. Traded it in for 2002R1150R. Havent used it much over the past 5 years. However, this past summmere on a road trip, it starved for fuel and front/rear lights went out. Highbeam worked! Strange. Rode it back ans shut it off in garage. No start at all. only 14k on it for miles. GS had 50k and the K75 50K for miles.
Thanks for the review. That left turn at the light from the right side of the car stopped in the left turn lane was straight out of the squid playbook. Guess it's not too surprising that you brag of 55 tickets. I like to ride fast, too, but it can be done without being a dick. Do us, and your employer, all a favor and start riding like you don't think you're the only one on the road.
+Cal Moto don't get me wrong mate, i rode 35.000 km on a BMW boxer and i know what i'm talking about ;) it's not your fault, its the sad area you are riding in that makesno justice to this bike :) cheers!
Dummy, the RS is closely related to the GS which has never had an electric windscreen. The RT has all the bells and whistles. Do some research if you're going to do 'reviews'.
All three bikes share the same engine. That said, the RT & GS both use a Telelever suspension rather than the telescopic fork used on the RS, & and the R. You really want to stand your ground based on mechanical windscreens? The RT & GS are more closely related than the RS & GS....holden.
Finally a good video on this!!! I want one Soooo bad.
Nice review. I too love the 1200R. I had an 07. Thinking about this RS though now.
This will definitely be my next bike! Glad to see a good review on it, thanks!
iRidez650 Thanks....enjoy:)
Love this guy ..legend 👌
Good review. Like your enthusiasm.
+James Dunn Thanks for the support!
Awesome video. The RS is definitely a great bike.
whitxxx Thank you:)
I like this review. I like-it-a-loh ;)

Alexual Have fun!
55th ticket! Awesome. Great vids, good info and I love the r1200r, rs and s1000r.
Fazer Thanks Bro!

Thanks!
Thank you....my pleasure!
I currently have the R nine T but may change to something more comfortable on longer rides.
I just rode my first BMW motorcycle on Tuesday... Let's just say that my next bike will be a Beamer. Lolol
Holy crap!!! 55 Tickets!?!? I'd be bankrupt if I had that many. LOL. Fantastic review!!! It looks like such a fun bike.
Freespiritphil Thanks! I've been a menace for a long time.

Wiser InTime That's absolutely crazy. I guess some people are just determined to what they want to regardless of the consequences.
Nice direct review

Very very cool.
“Those BMW engineers are intense” I laughed out loud. Classic René. Sadly missed.

Its nice how he actually pushes the bike. In other reviews they dont go over 20mph smh
BMW is taking over lol every bike meet I go to everyone has a s1000rr or a gs1200 lol and now with these new iterations who can say no lol
Great vid as usual, I just test rode one last week and the screen adjustment is shit! Ok bike but I purchased the R1200GS in the end 👊
Nice! How can you go wrong with a GS?
My R1150RT's days are numbered..
Cal, nice review, took out the r1200r out today, ran out of time, did not take the rs out, do u find the rs handlebars a little more forward lean? not much difference in price, depending on what package u get.
+Robert Parisi The bars are narrower....I like it better.
"That's why they put cruise control on the bike, so you can take both hands off the bars and adjust the screen" great comment
Thanks

Yeah, on a bike that someone else is going to put down good money on. I wouldn't buy a bike from this place.
Regarding comfort.
How would expect the forward leaning position on the RS (vs the more upright RT ) to effect your body over long distances ?
Does the fairing direct the wind over the top of your helmet ? How big is the protection bubble vs the RT ?

Thanks for your reviews. So, this or the r nine t?
desmoface The RS is a better, more advanced motorcycle. This really boils down to what you want from a bike; I just bought a new Speed Triple:)
What bike would you buy for $18k (now $20k) that is comparable?
envy!
Calmoto: I'm trying to choose between the RS and the GS...any thoughts? I'm not really planning on doing any heavy duty off roading but an occasional dirt road. Mostly touring and commuting.
The RS is my favorite BMW. You should get the GS because of the dirt.
Wow! Your favorite? Thanks for the advice :)
It´s a pity the new RS lost this amazing colour
What do you want for 20K an electronic windscreen?
Which one do you like, urban riding, S1000XR or R1200RS?
I'd probably go for the R1200R for urban use. Between the XR & the RS I'd get the RS.
Wow 55th speeding ticket! Do they not have a limit on how many you can get?
They do, but they only stay on the record three years.
Oh that's right... I think that's the same in Texas too
I wonder if they have a club for people with more than 50 tickets... that would take a long time to accumulate without losing your license.
Do you guys still have this bike in the shop?
CMB It's gone:(
The main reason I gave up BMW (Boxer) ownership was the high cost of ownership per mile. Aside from the thousand dollar "major maintenance" schedules I also had wonky tire wear issues. how does the shift assist work from 1. to 2. gear?
jørn rahn Not as smoothly as the rest; a bit clunky.
If you know how to do it right it's flawless, but it takes practice
how does the RS handling compare with the RT?
+Lone Ranger I don't really compare the two because they have different suspension; that said, I prefer the RS.
Cal Moto excellent, thanks. I may get one, if I do I may share in your 55 tickets.
R1100 GS and R1150R both breakdown. Fuel injection problems. Electrical gremlins
I think BMW have made a mistake with the instruments, the rev counter should be the analogue dial, if only because it looks better. +Zoltán Zaka Do you know how to distinguish an Austrian from a German? The German has a sense of humor;) Good grief, did you think I was serious?
+Cal Moto it wasn't obvious for me,,, but then hopefuly it's just me,,,
let's not encourage stunts in traffic!
+Zoltán Zaka No worries; you may be a touch more conservative than me:)....cheers!
+Zoltán Zaka
lighten up, Francis.
Why does the exhuast note sound so much better on the GS? This sounds very whiney, or is it just me?
shin888 The GS has a duel port exhaust and a smaller can. I didn't notice, but that must be it.
why is it 2016?
Weird question but how tall are you? Will the bike be comfortable for someone about 6'3 -6'4
Dalton Duckett 510. I would guess a tall saddle, lower pegs, and possibly bar risers depending you distribution.
how much for this bike?
18k-20k
Can't decide between THIS or the GS
scrambler350 I hate to complicate your life, but you need to check out the new BMW S1000XR. I'll have a vid up very soon:)
Already watched a couple vids on the 1000; awesome bike, but the boxer engine is the key feature that draws me to the BMW. Want something with more power, ABS, that still has the power curve of a 2cyl.
Riding a Harley now.
scrambler350 Give the R9T a sniff. I love that bike.

Image if I dollar cost averaged all that $ for all those years into a few growth funds. I don't want to think about:)Cheers.

Decided to Ride It's for the 95 ft-lbs of torque (or 90whatever ft-lbs it has). For street riding torque is supreme.
BMW. Bring my wallet. On my 3rd and final BMW. Breakdown city!
+fred nouvertne Same here. I have a 2012 R1200R and it has just under 26K miles on it and it has been flawless (knocking on wood). All I've done is recommended servicing. What bike do you have?

I do not know why idiots say these bikes break down I see them all the time with 50k miles with no issues??
I see Rts and GSs with 250K on a regular basis.
never take both your hands of the handlebars. that is a rookie mistake
gogu gigi Shut up.

+Cal Moto Dude, I've got to buy you a beer next time I'm in Cali
+Tom Swafford You disgust me.
Cal Moto you ride like someone is chasing you.lol...love it!
I Can't help myself....cheers bro!

how can you judge a bike ridin it in straights and traffic lights? mah...
+loris199 If you rode, you'd know.

it's not your fault, its the sad area you are riding in that makesno justice to this bike :)

damn right !!
definitely the ugliest in their line up
