I'd like to see a video on The Glanton Gang. They were a group of scalp hunters that worked their way through Mexico in the 1850's. They were paid per Indian scalps by the Government. They took any scalp that looked like it could of been Indian though, so Mexican people were butched by them too. My favorite book of all time is Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. It's based on those events, but fictionalized in a lot of ways. A video on Cormac McCarthy would be equally great!

I got to stand on the porch where their heads were deposited after being cut off by bounty hunters in the 1800s in a town called San Luis, Colorado. The Espinoza brothers are famous in the San Luis valley of Colorado.
I worked on the Ft Garland site in 2012 and a fort six miles north of Ft G called Fort Massachusetts. Archaeologist get to study some awesome stuff!!! Even worked a suspected murder site where the guy was buried in a shallow grave. We did the initial first scientific analysis shortly after it was found! I love being an archaeologist!
As a matter of fact anyone can go to Fort Garland to this day and tour the original site. There are a few buildings from the original fort. You can see sleeping quarters and a few other spots. Just south of Ft. Garland is the General Store where the Espinoza killer's heads were placed in view of everybody. The complications that arose that led to the murders of white settlers came about because of broken promises of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848. I highly recommended going to the site. As a veteran, it's absolutely amazing to stand where my predecessors once walked! And the census spoken of in the documentary that Simon did I have actually got to handle, it still exists! Awesome stuff 😎❤️😁
I too studied under Dr. Goddard. I went to the first field school at Ft. Mass!! Tobins grave is up on the hill at the old cemetery just west of Ft. Garland on the north side of the highway!

Great story. A great grandfather of mine was Kit Carson's nephew and acquainted with Tobin. (Interviewed in Cragins "Early Far West Notebooks") . Undoubtedly Tom was not a person to be messed with. Btw reportedly Tom complained for years that the Army never paid him the full reward for killing the Espinosas. There is a story of one a person who got the better of Tobin. His son in-law William Carson. The eldest son of Kit Carson was married to Toms daughter Pasqualita. One night Tom and William were drinking heavily when Tom objected to Williams treatment of Pasqualita. The two got into a knock down fight and William ended up shooting Tom and hitting him in the head with a hammer. Tom survived and surprisingly the two remained friends afterwards. Tom was later noted as saying he'd never again get involved in a married couples' affairs. Sometime later William was killed in a freak accident. He was working a stable when the horse kicked a pitchfork which struck and discharged a pistol in his waistband. I read somewhere where Tobin's son Tom Tobin, Jr. was one of the first lawmen killed in the line of duty in Colorado. He was part in a party tracking an escaped prisoner. As evening fell one of the other lawmen mistook Tom Jr. as the convict and shot and killed him. The Penitentes are a interesting group and still existed in SE CO and NM into the 1900s and I think there are still some.
This my family history, I've heard the stories but crazy to see a doc on it! This is definitely the Anglo version. Most Hispanics in the area considered them heros for defending our lands from Anglo settlers.

See, this is the margin between hero and villain. Joaquin Murrieta did largely the same thing with some similar motivation and violence. But he's revered, he's a hero, he became Zorro and the goddamn Batman. This guy became just another serial killer for use in lists.
That Espinoza was known form a young age as frighteningly violent and impulsive to his own community, that he raped women including that being his method of acquiring a wife, and his not having established an honest living from lots of hard work that was stolen from him in an instant...those are major differences from Joaquin Murrieta's story.

Interesting how there's two different versions/perspectives on this story. On the "hispano" version, Felipe is described as killing Americans due to his family being murdered during the Mexican American War as well as being wrongfully imprisoned. On the anglo version, he is a killer, rapist, and kidnapper who was apparently inspired by the Virgin Mary since he was super religious... You don't even have to be a devout Christian to know that murder is a sin... I'm pretth sure that was a lie written by some protestant American to demonize Catholics. Interesting how there's two different versions/perspectives on this story. On the "hispano" version, Felipe is described as killing Americans due to his family being murdered during the Mexican American War as well as being wrongfully imprisoned. On the anglo version, he is a killer, rapist, and kidnapper who was apparently inspired by the Virgin Mary since he was super religious... You don't even have to be a devout Christian to know that murder is a sin... I'm pretth sure that was a lie written by some protestant American to demonize Catholics. The virgin mary would never advocate for murder.
There was alot of anti Mexican sentiment in the newly annexed areas. History is written by the victors.
