    Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series on the history of Rome and ancient civilizations continues with the second video on the Roman religion. In the first episode we talked about the religious practices of Rome before the Greeks ( • Roman Religion Before ... ), while the second video focused on why the Romans adopted the Greek gods and how the Roman religion was Hellenized ( • How the Romans Adopted... ). This third episode will discuss how the Ancient Romans deified their rulers as well in the form of the Imperial Cult, but they had a unique approach towards the concept compared to other Empires that preceded and followed them. So how did the Roman rulers became God-Emperors?

    Vespasian is one of my favorite emperors and his alleged last words are one of the reasons. He was low born, he rose through native talent, fate...if you like, led him to the ultimate power and he, knowing the predilection of his fellow Romans to deify dead emperors, and knowing he was dying, decided to be brutally droll..."Oh my, I think I'm becoming a God." He's going into the dark but he has the presence of mind to mock the system that empowered him. The BALLS of the man. Now THAT'S an exit to be applauded.

      Vespasian was down to Earth according to legend/commentators. But he was not low born. His father was from the Equestrian class - Flavius Sabinus - albeit a tax collector. His mom, Polla, "belonged to the same status, but her brother became a senator." (source: page 50 of "The Roman Emperors" by Michael Grant).
      Now it seems Vespasian hit some rough currents during the Claudius' reign, and maybe during Nero's (for sleeping during a performance?), and had to engage in the trades to stay afloat (mule driving?).

    Ceaser Octavian/Augustus ruling style reminds me of the saying, often attributed to Machiavelli: It is not titles which honor men, but men which honor titles*. He never held the title of king, but his new made-up title "Augustus" and his family name "Ceaser" would later be considered higher ranks than mere kings.
    *Maybe Machiavelli did not say that; I could not find the exact source as far as I can tell it is not in"The Prince" or "Discourses on Livy"

    It's pretty funny that the Senate was totally willing to grant the Emperor even the title of god, but never that of King. For those who do not know, the Roman monarchy was not hereditary, since the King was elected by popular vote in the Senate. Without even realizing it, the people of Rome abhorred a more democratic age than the imperial one.

      I personally view the Roman Kings as foreign client kings from the Etruscans and Sabines. So driving them off was more xenophobia than doing so for free representation. And its not like the Senate capitulated willingly. They endured the most chaotic 60 years of their existence between the deaths of Livius Drucus and Mark Antony, including several purges where entire family lines were ended, and traded their pride for their lives and status by enabling Octavian. They had no choice. It was bow or be slaughtered bc they lost control of the legions.

Unlike many movie tyrants, who commit atrocities with a specific reasoning they genuinely believe in (like Caligula's "I am a God and I have the right to decide on your lives", or Nero's "Rome must burn so that art can be reborn"), Sulla's only motivation for killing is basically: "Meh. There's a major misconception about religion here. ALL polytheistic belief systems in the major sedentary civilizations worked exactly like the Roman one. They were civic religions tied to the state and their expression was channeled through cults and festivals governed by but also governing the state. This was true of Sumer, Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, Persia, the Hellenistic Kingdoms, most of India, China, and the Mesoamerican nations. It is still true in Japanese Shinto. It's actually the monotheistic religions that are unique in their relationship with the state, and that only happened after the power of the Caesars and Popes were broken.

    Deification of the emperor was probably one of the most significant factors holding the empire together so when it became Christian this couldn't continue as such instead a new approach happened which in the end resulted in the same thing-the divine right of kings backed by the religious hierarchy.When the Puritans in England went to king James I asking for toleration he insightfully replied "If there be no bishops there be no kings."Puritans didn't believe in the religious hierarchy as practicised by Catholics and Anglicans but preferred the presbyterian system of rule by elected elders.

    I was disappointed by the lack of depth of the analysis of what WAS the cult. What did they do, what for, who did it, how did the populace participate (if at all), how were the temples maintained, what happened with new emperors (particularly in the mentioned year of the four emperors), which was the hierarchy, what were the emperors' powers, the morality...?

    • @wildmen5025
      @wildmen5025 Před rokem +2

      As explained in the video, the worship of the divine emperors and other members of the imperial family that were deified was just like the worship of any other Roman deity. So basically the idea was that you'd worship the emperors with offerings (animal sacrifices, wine, incense, etc.) in the hopes that They would protect and bless the people of Rome. Everyone worshipped Them and the more popular the emperor in question the longer Their cult lasted. The morality of the cult was no different from that of the rest of the Roman religion. Basically the worship of the Emperor was just an addition to Roman religion and not a substitute so really all you need to do is look up how temples were run in general and you'll pretty much have an idea of what it was like

      @@wildmen5025 Thank you, some interesting insights there. However, I have serious doubts that the morality of the cult of, say, Bachus, was the same as the one of, say, apollo. The I.C. has also some unique characteristics by design, as the god changes over time. Were the priests of one emperor or any? Were the living emperors treated differently as the deceased? When did the special days of worship, which apparently were associated with the birthday and so on... change? And what was done there? And yes, for people like me who do not have a basic understanding of the initial cult, a bit of general info on who participated, how was the hierarchy (was there a supreme priest of the I.C. ? Or of of the cult to one emperor? I some other cults there was, it was not all Pontifex Maximus) and so on... would have been nice for me to have. Best regards.

    • @wildmen5025
      @wildmen5025 Před rokem +1

      @@EduardoSilvaLopez Actually the cult of Bacchus is perfectly in line with Roman morals when you consider the fact that cults of inversion often reinforce cultural norms by breaking those norms. Saying we can temporarily break some rules because a deity said we could only makes sense if there's a hierarchy to be followed. Not to mention that the cult of Bacchus was a fertility cult that used its revels to bless the land to promote agriculture. Agriculture necessitates a kind of social order to maintain or else nothing gets done. With all due respect, you're also forgetting the Romans were a polytheistic people. A Roman wouldn't just worship one deity but would seek to be on good terms with all of the Gods. A worshipper of Bacchus could very well also have a relationship with Apollo and this wouldn't be seen as odd.

    • @EduardoSilvaLopez
      @EduardoSilvaLopez Před rokem

      @@wildmen5025 I understand, but still still indicates that every one of both gods was adding something to the whole in terms of morality. Which raises the question of what was the I.C. adding.

    • @wildmen5025
      @wildmen5025 Před rokem +1

      @@EduardoSilvaLopez Well, loyalty to the state and the belief that the empire is a force of order. The Imperial Cult is descended from the Hellenistic Ruler cults and the whole point of those was that the ruler is an immediate force that can act in your life. You might never truly know if Jupiter or Apollo has really heard you but you can literally have a conversation with the emperor and have direct knowledge of the fact that he knows your situation. That kind of protection is only possible if there's a guy in charge to begin with. So clearly worshipping the living emperor's spirit or worshipping a dead emperor who has been apotheosized upholds the idea that being signed up with Rome means subscribing to having your needs met. The living emperor took care of the people in life and now He's going to take care of you in death too!

    _He [Sulla] left the political institutions of the Roman Republic fundamentally unchanged._
    Well, sure, but so did Augustus, if you squint a little. There were still elections and Consuls and all the other forms of Republican rule in the early Principate, but real power had shifted.
    I really think you have to date the Fall of the Republic to Sulla and Marius's conflict, merely with the understanding that it took decades to actually fall.
