  • Target, said that to improve business performance. They have made the decision to close nine Target stores across four states, effective Oct. 21.
They cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of their team and guests, and contributing to “unsustainable business performance”. Their stores serve an important role in their communities, but can only be successful if the working and shopping environment is safe for all.
What do you think are they closing for safety ,store underperformance or both?

Politicians will increase the supply of free subsidized mass transit passes to the shoplifters who would visit Targets farther away. Eventually, the Targets farther away willl get those shoplifters willing to commute to them for lack of other closer stores.

Adding a membership to any store would prety much defeat theft and add a better theft proof entrance to avoid large groups. But considering, big box stores rarely fare well in big cities, walmart, target etc, Big box stores are usually meant for "rural" conservative parts; but since the new take over of "dollar" stores are the new stores that take advantage of poor rural areas where people don't shop..
I remember there were a couple of organized crime thefts done through the church/pastors where they got caught.

@@koilamaoh4238 Shoplifters already sneak into Costco with fake membership cards printed at the public library or at school or at home. The gate keepers at Costco only see the brief flash of the words "Costco" and the people walk right in. There is no checking if there is actually a plastic membership card at any costco in the various cities I've been to in both Canada and USA. So any piece of paper that looks like the costco card is sufficient for a shoplifter to get in. Or they can say they are using the pharmacy or Optometrist and most USA states require Costo to let them in as they are licensed by the state and have subsidized infrastructure by the state taxpayers.

The expanse of everything, the copious samples, wide range of product and food court made it a grand adventure, and families of all kinds could appreciate the prices as well as the fact that you were less likely to get complaining during the weekly trip to the grocery. However, the looters will eventually come to Costco, in numbers without ID/badge.

@@sergeant64 The Costco gatekeepers barely look at the Costco badge. A piece of paper printed to look like a membership card can be glued to the back of any credit-card sized piece of plastic such as all those stupid plastic Xfinity fake credit cards if a card needs to be waved around. However, I never take mine out of my wallet, so all they ever see is just the colored letters COSTCO. I just barely flip my wallet open and they see the COSTCO and I just saunter right in without slowing down. Any shoplifter can do that too. Or they will say they are using any of the state-licensed services to get in because most states, like mine, do not allow stores to prevent public use of any taxpayer-funded licensing such as pharmacy or optometry. Also, in 2015 alcohol was added, so that's why beer prices aren't always good at Costco. My state law does allow membership-only stores to offer discounts to members for pharmacy and alcohol purchases. However, they cannot require a membership to make a purchase. Because of the law being known, shoplifters can easily cite the law and enter the store to peruse the alcohol or anywhere else in the store with small pocketable objects.

In my work experience with Target in the past they strive to run a "well-oiled machine" so this pre-emptive move of closing these stores may be their way of moving resources around so that they can support more profitable location? - I don't know. The two targets that I shopped at have both become sparser in merchandise and replaced those items with clothing. Even the food sections have shrunk to about half of what they used to be which basically means target is no longer a place to do the main part of shopping but to pick up convenience items. As I've seen, most of the remaining food items here are either drinks, snacks, or frozen food items. The other types of staples are totally missing as there is zero produce, almost no bakery type items, and butcher type meats are gone. If all the dry goods (beauty, food, housewares, home appliances, electronics, and sporting goods), cafe, shopping cart, and customer service spaces are added up, they are somewhat less than half of the floor space with everything else being clothing. It feels more like a clothing store than what it used to be. For example, there are basically no car care products and many types of "small pocket-sized goods" no longer exist unless you go to target.com

I remember a CZcams video a while back, of these thieving couple who were able to steal some items darting out of the fire escape. The second time they tried at a different Costco, the police were waiting. I have also heard of stories of Costco Business Center banning people for shoplifting. I was told of a woman who would stick a whole slab of meat in her dress to use at her restaurant. She got away with it for a few weeks until they finally reviewed the tapes and caught her in 4K.
And then I have heard of criminals infiltrating Amazon warehouses in order to steal items. Forming cliches in order to steal more. Even after they get caught and fired, they brazenly try to recruit people in the warehouse to steal for them.
However, the Costco parking lot may be dicey. I personally had to deal with a thief who tried to steal from my cart as I was loading. But they saw me giving them the stink eye and they gave up and left me alone. And I had noticed thieves also prowling the parking lot, looking for items in people's cars to smash and grab.

I've been a Costco member for twenty five years, the reason Costco is so successful is they tightly control who they let in the Store. You have to be a member to enter, and they make you show the door person your membership card to enter. Then when you leave you have to show a different door person your receipt and they check the items in your cart to the receipt. They don't just let anyone in. And if they have any problems with a member (stealing), they'll cancel their membership. All that combined is why they don't have any problems, basically zero thefts, and will continue to thrive.

They probably continued to steal it and walked out the store with it. It's bad enough that at Halloween, some of those nasty parents have made OTHER things near my front door disappear such as garden tools, sprayers, and even a garden hose disappeared. So even if there is zero cost, that mindset of "taking it for free" exists wherever they go at all times of the day. I doubt that the items being on sale stops them from continuing to shoplift. It's an attitude.

The retail store I work at has a super high crime rate & will be closing in the near future if things don't turn around with the permissiveness of tolerating criminals/shoplifters. The majority of shoplifters come in regularly & some multiple times a day. What's changed is the ENTITLEMENT attitude they have as they exit the store without even trying to hide the merchandise. My store has become the hub for criminals & is more dangerous than before when we were allowed to call the cops & arrest, then prosecute the shoplifters. The ENTITLEMENT attitude is the most disturbing. Also by far, the majority are NOT just trying to get a loaf of bread to feed their families. It's to make money for drugs, iPhones, cigarettes , alcohol etc. They make 100% profit.

Many states provide free subsidized bus passes to those on social welfare. So they will just commute to the areas with open stores. And shoplift at those. Buses in many cities now have bicycle racks, so the suspects can even take a bicycle to just the approximate area with the best bus stop having loitering areas. They can then ride their bicycles to nearby shops or residential areas to look for porch packages.
