      Thanks so much Chris. I know exactly how you feel, because a few years ago, I could never figure out why autocomplete works sometimes, and other times it did not. I even searched on the MSDN, every group and nobody explained it to me, other than 'data must be in the column' so through LOTS of trial and error I figured out the 'Don't break the chain' method which is why is the first training video I created. Much appreciated.

  • @reverendbilly9496
    @reverendbilly9496 Před rokem +1

    It appears that the connecting adjacent cells to make auto-complete function have to be to the left of the data field column. I have a formula in the column to the right that has no gaps, and it doesn't seem to work to connect the column to it's left for the purposes of auto-complete.

    • @ExcelForFreelancers
      @ExcelForFreelancers  Před rokem

      Hi and thanks so much. The chain of filled cells can be either on the right or left and the chain can be in any column as long as the links are not broken and the linking data must be in the same column. Formulas should work unless they are returning empty but you can test out different variations
      I hope this helps and thanks so much.

    I tend to use this custom format to hide things ";;;" when I do not want to hide a column or row - that way I do not need to worry about colors - is there a problem doing it with a custom format? Just curious about your opinion on that. Thanks.

    • @ExcelForFreelancers
      @ExcelForFreelancers  Před 4 lety

      Hi and thanks for the comment. I think that works just fine as well. In the case of auto-complete you can also use just spaces as well, so there would be no need to change the font color in that case. Blank spaces are just fine when using the chain method. The only downside to that is you can't see which ones are missing if your auto-complete is not working.

    What about data validation? Wouldn't be easier to select from a drop-down list? Nice trick btw

    • @ExcelForFreelancers
      @ExcelForFreelancers  Před 4 lety

      Generally we do both. The validation validates the value however data validation does not help with auto-complete. We want to be able to start typing in the value and have it automatically fill in. If we just add in validation only, it will not automatically fill in when a user starts to enter text. They would be forced to open the drop down list and scroll and locate the item. This could be very time-consuming if the list is in the thousands. So this is a quick way to enter the value that is desired. Thanks for the great question and i hope this helps.

    • @ExcelForFreelancers

      Hi thanks the best way is to use numeric (Not alphanumeric) So what you can do is use a separate and hidden column to keep track of the numeric Invoice #'s, in which you can use the Max formula (numeric is required for this) Then you have your Main Invoice # (alphanumeric) which is built together using a formula with your letters and numeric Invoice #'s

    I always found the Excel standard Autocomplete to be clunky, given that one had to type enough characters such that only one possible entry was left such that Excel would decide to complete it for you. I once worked on Excel Online, and found out the functionality that Autocomplete would give you every choice according to what you typed in, and I thought, where in the PC Excel application was this?
    Right there on 3:50. You're saving me cumulative future seconds.
