Wow! Never understood why the autocomplete sometimes works and others not. Will adapt some files at work straight away on monday. Thanks a lot for your tutorials.
Same with me, took me years to figure it out, and I never did find a proper explanation of why. That is why I made the video. Thanks very much for your comment Carmela

Thank you so very much, I really appreciate that Atanu.
Search all over and you explained exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. Great job.
Thanks so much Chris. I know exactly how you feel, because a few years ago, I could never figure out why autocomplete works sometimes, and other times it did not. I even searched on the MSDN, every group and nobody explained it to me, other than 'data must be in the column' so through LOTS of trial and error I figured out the 'Don't break the chain' method which is why is the first training video I created. Much appreciated.
Thank you very much Randy🙏 helpful to me
For sure, you are very welcome and I am happy to help and share

Just wondering if I will update the list of the countries it will automatically update the pasted link, I tried on excel 2019 and it does not update( beginner user so please don't judge ). Any suggestions ?
Hi Motto, thanks for your comment. If you update the original list, and the links are accurate, then yes it will certainly update properly, regardless of what version of Excel. Make sure the links have been pasted properly.

Hi Randy. Just found this one. Great Auto-Complete tips! Thanks for sharing :)) Thumbs up!!
HI and thanks so much Wayne. Super glad you enjoyed this training.
It appears that the connecting adjacent cells to make auto-complete function have to be to the left of the data field column. I have a formula in the column to the right that has no gaps, and it doesn't seem to work to connect the column to it's left for the purposes of auto-complete.
Hi and thanks so much. The chain of filled cells can be either on the right or left and the chain can be in any column as long as the links are not broken and the linking data must be in the same column. Formulas should work unless they are returning empty but you can test out different variations
I hope this helps and thanks so much.
@ExcellForFreelancers - Col1 is dates with no gaps, Col2 has gaps. Col3 auto-complete ends with each gap. Col4 filled with formulas also has no gaps. What am I missing?
Hi , Thanks for your comment. It would be difficult for us to help unless we see the sheet, data and cells associated. Can you upload screenshots of your bug and sheet into our Excel For Freelancers Facebook Group here: bit.ly/groupexcel We have 60,000 Members who would love to help you with this. Thanks so much.
Sir, I love the way you teach. I watch your almost videos. Request to start VBA from basic. Thanks a lot from India.

I have been on the Facebook group for quite sometime now. This is the first video I have watched of yours. Looks interesting. I hope to keep watching some more of them. Maybe you can incorporate the creation of a dynamic list using the indirect function as well.

I will test it
HI and thanks as long as the data is in the same column (even linked data, yes) will work just fine. Most often my original data is in another sheet and I am just linking the cells. I hope this helps and thanks so much.
useful
Glad you think so!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Sorry if you mentioned this... but can this be used with Data Validation tool? (newbie)… Thanks

Oh, fantastic!
Many thanks! I am glad you enjoyed the training.
Thank you very much "Excel For Freelancers" provided very nice and useful video Tutorials.
You are a Great Tutor. I like your maximum video tutorial but I have needed a
"construction application" using Excel like your nicely procedure.
If you provided that's video tutorial we are very very happy for that's.
Thanks very much. I will do my best and since I am a former Contractor I have already developed many Estimating programs so I would be happy to create these for you. Thank you.
Thank You so much, I was so frustrated why it wouldn't auto-complete the word, and it was that I broke the chain. Thanks for saving my sanity!
You are very welcome. I went through the same things as you did and it took months to figure out why it would work sometimes and not others. This was the first video I did on this channel 2 1/2 year ago. I am glad you enjoyed it and that I was able to help.
Thanks for your video. It is so helpfull.
Can I open a specific workbooks by writing filename in a textbox and open it in a new window by pressing a command button?
If you have solution please share with me.
All of your videos have inspired me to learn ExCeL. Thanks a lot and waiting for your answer.
Hi thanks when working with files you can leaern a lot, including opening specific workbooks, with my File Manager series, here on CZcams
I tend to use this custom format to hide things ";;;" when I do not want to hide a column or row - that way I do not need to worry about colors - is there a problem doing it with a custom format? Just curious about your opinion on that. Thanks.
Hi and thanks for the comment. I think that works just fine as well. In the case of auto-complete you can also use just spaces as well, so there would be no need to change the font color in that case. Blank spaces are just fine when using the chain method. The only downside to that is you can't see which ones are missing if your auto-complete is not working.
great tutorial
you saved my time
Thanks so much I am really glad I could help.
Sir, its awesome for Someone beginner like me
Thanks so much I am really glad you like it.
What about data validation? Wouldn't be easier to select from a drop-down list? Nice trick btw
Generally we do both. The validation validates the value however data validation does not help with auto-complete. We want to be able to start typing in the value and have it automatically fill in. If we just add in validation only, it will not automatically fill in when a user starts to enter text. They would be forced to open the drop down list and scroll and locate the item. This could be very time-consuming if the list is in the thousands. So this is a quick way to enter the value that is desired. Thanks for the great question and i hope this helps.
Nice vidio
Thank you so very much, I really appreciate that.
Excellent trick - Thank you :)
Thanks so much, I am glad you liked it.
please try to teach ledger using advance excell work in one sheet your data will be save in multiples sheet. thankss

amazing

good
Thank you very much. I do appreciate that.
Great training video.I have a question and that is how would this work if you had your list on another tab and/or in another workbook.Would this still work without a formula or vba.
Thanx
Hi thanks for your comment and question. It would work, even in another workbook using links to the other workbook, or tab,s o this would not be a problem, and without VBA. (You would just need to make sure the links were updated if the workbook was moved) Thanks again for the great question Brad.
Great video! What kind of version of Excel is that? Seems like it's some old one.
Hi yes I use Excel 2010, since I want to make sure that anyone around the world can also create the same solutions with Excel, regardless of the version they use.
Hi I have a question not related to the video above.
I am working on a VBA invoice number, very time i click safe to PDF, I do like my invoice number to increase by 1. The problem is that mine is alphanumeric, so i cannot get the coding right.
Please help.
Hi thanks the best way is to use numeric (Not alphanumeric) So what you can do is use a separate and hidden column to keep track of the numeric Invoice #'s, in which you can use the Max formula (numeric is required for this) Then you have your Main Invoice # (alphanumeric) which is built together using a formula with your letters and numeric Invoice #'s
I hope this helps. I always found the Excel standard Autocomplete to be clunky, given that one had to type enough characters such that only one possible entry was left such that Excel would decide to complete it for you. I once worked on Excel Online, and found out the functionality that Autocomplete would give you every choice according to what you typed in, and I thought, where in the PC Excel application was this?
Right there on 3:50. You're saving me cumulative future seconds.
Thanks so much Kai, it took me a very long time to figure out why autocomplete works sometimes and why other times it did not. After lots of testing time i figured out the 'Don' break the chain' method so I thought i would create a video on it. I am glad you liked it.

Hi Randy! Thank you very much for this. I have a question. Is it possible to make it also for numbers? Thank you
Hi and thanks you can give it a try with #'s and see how it works for you :)
@@ExcelForFreelancers Hi Randy, thank you for answer. You mean to give the # instead of "x" or how do you mean it? I have such numbers: 20-01-1564, 20-01-1565 etc. Unfortunately I can´t format the numbers otherwise, it is connected with another application. Dear Sir, Auto fill is valuable time saving tool, but it works only for one column up, how about multi column..say a week menu if i compose then it never works for next column..

any vba code to do that from another sheet

@@ExcelForFreelancers you're very welcome. I happen to be working on a freelance project at the moment and i currently have it setup to use a forms drop down button and im not happy with it since everything else is an input cell.
@@ExcelForFreelancers I tried this just now and the chain unfortunately doesn't work. If I put the list immediately below the cell I am typing in then it works. but using x or space to create a chain and placing the list in another column does not work. O365, Excel Version 1902
The version should not matter, The list has to be in the same column of course and really have to make sure the chain is not broken. I have tested this in O365 and is working fine, so you may want to run some more tests to check.

this doesn't help when creating a bill or an invoice cz you don't have the similar cells below the required cell. you may have some horizontally merged cells in the bottom rows so it doest work. need some perfect solution not JUGAAR
