    1. He played an active Ibanez. 2. He has a distortion on, most likely a rat because he loved that thing. 3. He hit hard with his heavy gauge pick, he also had low action so it was naturally distorting.

let me add, Paul use to record all the slipknot songs wit a IBANEZ ATK (active), basically thats the base tone on that model, the preamp is amazing, i have a atk 305 and i tell you thats the secret! that is a inexpensive bass will be finded in reverb for something like $400 - $700$

this is actually pretty good, the only thing it needs is something like a transparent overdrive with the gain all the way down, just to give it that tight low end and extra “clank”

Sansamp: Drive: 5/ Presence: 7/ Blend:4/ Bass: 6/ Mids and Highs: 2. Adjust level to something coherent (arround 4 in my case) . Tip: if tone is too dark or bright, adjust the blend, not the highs
Peavey pro 500: most controls are to adapt to the rest of the rig but some key points: high boost and low cut engaged, contour cranked. Highs are on 2 on my unit but YMMV. For the parametric EQ i'd say noodle arround to find sweet spots but a heavy scoop at 800 hz is the core.

Honestly that was pretty fucking close, especially to the specific tone he used in the Duality instructional video

Should've used a Musicman honestly. I would say the Rick sounds too thin for Paul's tone. Tho It's surprisingly close

I was able to get a Slipknot bass tone with just an Ibanez bass and a Peavey tube amp. Cant remember what i had the knobs set because this was like 15 years ago

It needs a little more brightness, but very nice. Time to grab some more basses so you got more options
