Addendum - Splatoon Inkling Vocal Effects

- In this addendum to my video from last week ( • Behind Splatoon's Fina... ), I'll get substantially more technical in describing how I emulated the Inkling's voice from Splatoon! The effects shown here are from Logic Pro X for Mac computers.
Crafting this effect is not a beginner project, and I'm trying to balance explanation with tutorial. I welcome your feedback!

It's just gibberish, but it would be interesting. Squid Sisters and Off the Hook music do have officiak lyrics but they don't mean anything
Unfortunately, some of the effects used can't be undone. The biggest one is the EQ used in step 3. When so many parts of the sound are cut out by the EQ, there's no way to know what they originally were, so there's no way to undo it. It's like trying to reproduce the original photograph from a cropped copy.
Even then, the other effects are exceedingly difficult to undo cleanly. For example, to undo the auto filter, you'd have to create an EQ that has the exact opposite shape as the cuttoff the filter uses, then hand-automate it to exactly match the modulation of the filter. Most EQs simply aren't capable of creating the right EQ curves, since they usually give you a limited number of parabola-like shapes to move around, but the shape the filter creates, after all of the options it provides, is likely to be quite a bit more complex. It's like trying to reproduce an original photograph after it's been heavily edited in Photoshop.

The Splatoon devs use pro tools to record, and the last part (automating the LFO speed) can be replicated using the random-shape pencil tool in pro tools

@@TheLifeoflink The sleeve of a record was called a liner; liner notes are writing on the packaging or otherwise included with music. Usually, it's just the lyrics in a booklet, but some are really fantastic (google around for "And the Hundred Dollar Sandwich" to see what I mean)

I have no idea about anything you said. I just wanted to hear Scruffy say, “Woomy!”
Something interesting about Inkling vocals is that some of them seem to make distinguishable English-like "words." An Inkling girl sound that can come up after buying something from Crusty Sean sounds a bit like "thank you." There's also a vocal clip I've heard that sounds a bit like "perfect." I think it might be an Octoling boy sound. Is this simply the human tendency to attach familiar sounds to new ones, a neat Easter egg, or something that says something deeper about the world of Splatoon and the cultural transfer between humankind and Inkling/Octoling culture?

I mean other languages loan words from each other as well as dead languages so I don't see why they couldn't borrow some loan words from us

Octoweaponry is the name of the Splat 1 boss theme, the Splat 2 boss theme is Octarmaments.
I’m glad to see that Scruffy is not only putting out more consistent content, but also growing his currently very small fanbase. I can only hope that his videos begin to reach more people, as their quality is unrivaled by much on CZcams.

I had no idea it was that hard to do an inkling voice! Though I kinda feel like the final result sounds like the high pitch version with just some bubble noises added onto it. Maybe it's that particular word clip? I don't know anything about this stuff though and I definitely wouldn't be able to get even close to making it that accurate!

For what I do to make an inkling voice is similar.
While I don't have any idea what any of the things you were talking about meant in the "LFO" stage, what I do know is that I also use a logic filter type function. In my program, there's an option named "wah-wah". It's the simplest way to explain the sound it makes. I tend to play around with that setting often, and I find that using the effect without automation andleaving it the same setting throughout makes it sound better.
Another thing to make it sound even more acurate is to mess with your voice as you record before you mess with it in the program. If you know Stitch from Lilo and Stitch, he's the best example I could give. If you try to talk like him while maybe not pronouncing a few letters like T, F, and M, it sounds even better. At least, that's from my experience.

From what I've found, you get a more accurate sound using a phaser instead of a lowpass filter.

I can actually do some of the inkling girl's voices, including the gurgling effect without needing some audio editor for it. Might've been because I tried to imitate the "woomy" line quite some time-
Which gave me the ability to do 8's lines as well-
It just kinda took practice for me when I had nothing else to do at the moment. But this was a rather interesting video to learn how they did it.

well uh... i already know how to talk like an inkling without a computer! all ya' need is a finger and you have all you need! just place your finger sideways in the middle of your lips, then wiggle your finger up and down while speaking and you have that inkling affect! much easier. :>
