  • San Francisco Mayor London Breed and SFPD Chief William Scott are defending the department's militarized response to an unsanctioned skateboarding event near Dolores Park where 32 people were arrested and 81 minors were detained. Skateboarders we spoke with say the police overreacted. Parents said some of the teens taken into custody were unlawfully detained.

I'm a lawyer in San Francisco and I am in spirit rooting for these kids. The city does act with unjustified aggression against skaters and engage in Cops v. Skater fraternal mentality. Skateboarders and police have always been at odds thoughout the world. The difference is that kids and skateboarders are not under oath and held to the standards of law enforcement or Authority. For police to repetitively engage in gang-like conflicts with skateboarders is a failure on law enforcement and the city. I'd represent that kid in court if he needed help.
San Francisco is globally recognized as the most important or popular city in skateboarding (an Olympic sport btw) because of the terrain of the streets. This hill bomb has existed annually for decades.
San Francisco has massive problems with theft. For SF Police to divert resources away from massive problems and aggressively use them against participants of a culturally and positive community organized event is counterproductive to the alleged mission of Police.

But didn't a kid die at a prior event? Wouldn't that deem the event unsafe. Lawsuits are a huge cash grab for many residential opportunists, so Wouldn't it be fair to say that the police had a point in trying their best to prevent the unsanctioned Skate Bomb? Not to mention there have been other criminal elements present in previous years. They also barricaded the street and the kids egregiously pushed them aside, these aren't sweet, innocent protagonist, they seem like unruly instigators, with anarchic tendencies. Kids with respect and appreciation of the law (like yourself) would have stood down and found somewhere else to skate that wasn't disruptive to the community.

      @TaoSkateboarding Před rokem

      @@FreshNsaucY I’d like to offer some thoughts…
Skateboarding is inherently dangerous. Every skater assumes these risks (even minors). I’m not a lawyer, but from a legal standpoint (in an ideal world), these types of events would have proper permitting, insurance, and symbiotic coordination with the city to ensure they are as safe and contained as possible. Ideally, minors would be encouraged and/or required to wear helmets, while ensuring the appropriate security protocols also are taken to keep the counter-culture debauchery tamed/contained within the event’s parameters.
From a cultural perspective, part of the allure of skateboarding, is the freedom to explore cities in the context of a sport and the ability to organize a sporting event in the context of something like a San Francisco hill bombing event. From the outside it may appear anarchistic, but for the millions of kids all over the world who skate, these moments are culturally iconic and produce some of the most amazing films, photographs, and works of art the world has ever known. These types of events are also some of the most special moments we ever get to experience as skaters and rare opportunities to gather with people from all walks of life, while experiencing some of the most elite skateboarding the world has to offer.
From a sporting perspective, as skaters, these types of events push you to explore your own potential. There’s something about the chaotic energy and pressure of a competition like environment that pushes us to explore beyond the bounds of our own preconceived limitations. While from the outside, it may seem reckless watching a bunch of kids bombing a San Francisco street, from a technical sport perspective, this requires an unreal amount of skill, focus, persistence, and bravery. That type of experience really only exists within skateboarding and extreme sports that are similar (mountain biking, motocross, etc.). Furthermore, skateboarding is one of the only sports in the entire world next to fútbol/soccer that has an ever expanding global footprint. Because of that, there’s a warranted distain for government officials trying to stifle these events when much of the world (including most cities/states in the U.S.) have accepted skateboarding and the associated events of this nature, as contextually normal/relevant.
From a business perspective, these events are incredible revenue generators for cities. I’ll have to find the source, but while conducting research for my own business venture, I found a study conducted in the context of concerts, which showed that for every $1 spent at concerts/local venues, an average of $3-$5 in revenue was generated for the surrounding businesses. While at the time, I couldn’t find any research tailored for skateboarding events specifically, it’s likely these types of skateboarding events benefit local businesses comparatively. Furthermore, these events tend to be organized/sponsored by local skateboarding companies in addition to non-skateboarding related local businesses (restaurants, apparel companies, churches, youth centers, etc.). So there’s a big financial incentive for those businesses (and the city/ies) to do these events, especially in a way that doesn’t result in the type of chaos that ensued at the particular event illustrated in this video.
I would challenge your comment about “criminal elements” being present in previous years. I know they mentioned that in the video, but what do think that means exactly to warrant such concern? To the same extent, are you not concerned and furious seeing state sanctioned police, outfitted with military grade riot gear, deploying violent force against teenagers, whom they proceeded to unlawfully detain (which by definition would be considered criminal)?
Obviously there were skaters and/or spectators who were deliberately vandalizing property and escalating the chaos once the riot police were dispatched. To which I’d argue, that they should be held accountable appropriately. However, if the institutions of authority want respect, then they need to lead in such a way that is diplomatically worthy of respect.
Were there any steps taken by the mayor or police chief to establish contact with the event organizers in an effort to find a diplomatic solution before dispatching the riot police? We don’t know based on this video, but having done so would have almost certainly bared a more peaceful result. However, it would seem that the powers that be just sent the riot police out to lay down the iron fist. And well, the only outcome you ever see from that approach (historically), is a violent clash…
One of the things that makes skateboarding so special and important for society, is that it brings every type of person together in an egalitarian way. When deployed constructively, it can connect with and/or challenge the various institutions within society to change (who so often try to contain us all within rigid walls of conduct, thinking, and complicity). Pick any repressed social demographic throughout history, and you’ll find, they all had to break through barricades to enact any degree of meaningful change...

Even though the San Francisco "Park Rangers" are civilian employees and Not cops, they are being militarized with their aggressive, intimidating uniforms excessively carrying batons and unnecessary double magazine holders. The parks should be family and community oriented places and these park rangers should not have any weapons, including batons, on them at all. Just the army green color of their uniforms make them look like soldiers in wars. Adding their star shaped badges make them look like sheriff deputies and even Nazi cops. Also the park rangers vehicles appear too similar to law enforcement vehicles, especially when they turn on their white spot lights causing unaware and frighten drivers to instinctively pull over for them.
Much more often nowadays, a few park rangers try to act like cops. Just yesterday, I saw one "park ranger" (the big chubby looking African American one) asking a driver only parking on the street for identification documents. It was Not even in the parks!! On many times in Golden Gate Park during the day, I saw the short, bulky Asian one trying to stop moving vehicles, literally trying to make traffic stops and trying to ask for driver's licenses. This is so dumb and what could go wrong. People are not required to talk or show them anything to these wannabe park employees. These wannabe park employees are begging for trouble.
There needs to be critical changes to the San Francisco park rangers, so they do not get mistaken for law enforcement.
First, amend their job title to one that more closely reflect their duties and responsibilities, such as "park service officers", "park monitors", *park ambassadors" etc.
Second, drastically change their uniforms and their badges to the light blue color shirts and the shield shaped or round badges like the ones similar to the parking enforcement. Also, restrict any weapons, including batons.
Third, modify their park ranger vehicles emblem/logo to look like other city vehicles with the city seal. Only allow amber color warning lights with amber color lenses to make it known that they are not law enforcement. As they monitor the police dispatch calls to try to respond, but instead interfere with the work of first responders while doing unnecessary assistance, discontinue and disallow any police scanner capabilities inside their vehicles.
You can make changes before the City passes the vote for the upcoming budget.
Please contact your district board of supervisors representative to express these serious concerns. Although most departments, particularly the ones dealing with social welfare will have their budget cutted, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department is expected to have their upcoming budget increased for even more park rangers to harass innocent park patrons. You!!
Would you rather have more park service employees to collect paychecks or funds to support people in need to afford basic essentials, like food and shelter?

Bear in mind that in the absence of law and order, the criminal underclass you vigorously defend will slaughter you as you scream “I’M AN ALLY!!!!!”

LMAO! Park Rangers…REALLY? You seriously wrote a whole book on park rangers when this segment had nothing to do with them. They are the least of this city’s problems. Who will be verbally attacked next, building and grounds, security at the Metreon, fare inspectors, target security… oh wait, what about meter maids? They have mace… better write a book on how we should rid them as well for being equipped with such a high dose of chili resin and have some major conspiracy theory to take over the world by writing cars tickets at expired meters. Hahaha! 😂 Sounds like a sad ex employee who got the boot if you ask me. I’d rather see park rangers in my park then police. I think a BOOM should end this reply so… BOOM!

in my opinion you must be pretty much a scaredy cat if a uniform intimates you, and a baton? if you're not doing anything wrong, why be intimidated??? you don't get to decide what is unnecessary, even if it's a double magazine holder, you're not a cop or anything else probably, are you?

I've had run ins with the police as a minor, and NEVER would I had disrespected them the way these unruly, selfish, defiant, ignorant brats did. Worst generation in the last 50 years. Glad the cops uses excessive force, because most of the trouble makers in the crowd clearly weren't disciplined at home. Did you see the mother throwing her drink at the officer? Seriously?? These people got what they deserved. The cops CLEARLY stated that the event was not sanctioned or approved by the city, in order to uphold safety precautions, the kids/parents fought the law, and ultimately, the law won. Good job for standing up to the mob London.

All forms of lawlessness must be dealt with. The parents and minors should have been detained and not released.

These SF kids don't take Algebra I until grade 9 (other cities in California take it at grade 8 or even 7), so don't worry. We are not losing much STEM talents if they got arrested or whatever..
