Wow. Superb. American actors, emphasizing the words -- Gilbert would have loved this, and so would Sullivan, who was no fool -- and the simple and elegant piano accompaniment really brings it out.

I was disappointed with the ending they gave this version.

I haven't seen it. What did they do?

I too am mystified about Ms. Spencer’s comment on her dissatisfaction with the ending here. Is it because one measure of the accompaniment was truncated during the closing piano tag? Or is the objection to the continuously spry and cheerful manner in which the song is concluded? I know normally one hears at this point of the song a kind of melancholy ritardando and diminuendo heading toward the fade out. I can empathize with a possible criticism in this case because, taking into account the astonishing, incredibly tragic, and hollowly exuberant finale of this opera, the closing of this penultimate song is often used to foreshadow the imminence of the fate of Jack Point and this opera’s tragic conclusion, and when played in this fashion it can so effectively express great portent. I must add that I thought the arrangement of the piano accompaniment here was both unusual and lovely. And I never knew Celeste Holm could sing that well (although I was aware that she was the original Ado Annie in Oklahoma! on Broadway in 1943). I totally agree with Mr. Austin’s comment that this clip is jaw dropping. As for Drake and Cook, what amazing pros and legends, the;y never fail to please and astound, and they seem so young and vibrant here. And Hayes is very good too. My understanding is that the whole show still exists somewhere in video form, and I hope that I have the opportunity to see it some day. Until today, I had no idea this show even existed. Thank you for so much for posting this clip.

I don't see anything particularly objectionable, but I have learned over the years that G&S people are...peculiar.
