For Cagney, the definition of a love scene is where he lets the other guy live - Brilliant!
When I watch this salute to Cagney I see so many famous faces it makes me sad they are all gone now but i hope there is a heaven so I will meet them ,great video love Cagney god bless
Great comment 👏
Brilliant actor RIP MR Cagney.
I loved James cagney he was my all time FAV..i have Yankee Doodle dandy the movie and met his sister Jean when I lived in Cali biggest thrill of my life
Oh, my goodness, Sandy - I would have been utterly thrilled, too! James Cagney has also, for me, in my lifetime’s favorite. VIVE, CAGNEY, FOREVER! ❤️
The classics and classic actors and actresses of days long gone. RIP
People like cagney and hope who leave in impression on the rest of the world should be able to live forever :(
Immortality is implied in everlasting torment.
True
Whenever you hear the refrain "Thanks for the Memory" start up, you know you're about to experience true magic!
two great friends with a great affection for each other
James Cagney is my all time favorite male actor. He was quite versatile, but often typecast as a likable thug. He was simply brilliant.
I watched cagney movies in high school when everyone was out partying 💜
You dirty rat
Hope references his performance in The Seven Little Foys, in which he danced with Cagney, who reprised his Oscar winning role as George M. Cohan. Both men were marvelous. Great line: To Cagney, a love scene was when he let the other guy live. Unfortunate that Cagney couldn't be persuaded to come out of retirement for My Fair Lady and The Godfather.
I've always liked bob hope great comedian and human being the work he did entertaining our troops big props to him for that. rip bob
When Hollywood had real talent!!
When Hollywood was Hollywood
Hollywood has ALWAYS been a cesspool of paedophilia.
dunno if anyone gives a shit but if you are stoned like me atm then you can stream all of the new movies on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my brother for the last couple of weeks :)
@Bryson Corbin definitely, I have been using instaflixxer for since november myself :)
@@wearesouls6783 as well as some politicians
Yes , real talent by those classic movie stars like Cagney, Bob Hope, etc. Today.... Not with the same class .... In my opinion
There was some serious firepower in that room for the AFI 1974 event and it was deserved for one of the most versatile actors of all time. When he went on the show
"What's My Line" the star-studded panel could not make him out until he gave himself
away with his lower east side Manhattan accent. They could not make him out because he had done singing and dancing and also drama movies. Case rested!
After Cagney retired from movie making in 1961, following his lead role in Wilder's "One,Two,Three", he was also offered other comeback vehicles, including the role of Alfred Doolittle, Eliza's father, in the George Cukor film of "My Fair Lady", for which Stanley Holloway won an Oscar. When he ultimately returned in 1981 in Ragtime, he received positive reviews, but he was debilitated by health problems and only made one more film.
All I can say is, what an awesome job he did here, absolutely superb and he's so natural and cool!!!!!
Bob's walk. Inimitable.
Saw him saunter onto the Chicago Theater stage in 1980 just as he did here. Charisma personified!
I can't think of any contemporary actor who has the range and versatility of James Cagney: he could act in highly dramatic roles such as Cody Jarett in Raoul Walsh's White Heat; he could portray Lon Chaney convincingly in Man Of A Thousand Faces; he could portray a composer and a legendary song and dance man, George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy and win an Oscar; he could play comedic roles with great skill in Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three and The Captain in Mister Roberts. He was also an articulate an self educated and cultured man.
I agree! Cagney was the most versatile US Actor of all time. Even a distinguished panel on "What' s My Line" could not identify Cagney until he gave his Manhattan Lower East Side voice away on the last question
+MrImiller07
Give yourself a treat.....watch Cagney's wonderful turn as Admiral William F.
Halsey Jr. in "The Gallant Hours", if you haven't done so. IMO, Cagney's last
great film but too often overlooked.
Glad to hear you mention it. One of my favorites, too!
MrImiller07 Rod Steiger wasn’t bad- he always seems to be acting even when he has no lines
I hope there is a heaven cause l hope to meet one of the greatest actors of all time jimmy Cagney.
Bob Hope: the King of American comedy!
In actuality, Cagney was offered the role of Hyman Roth, patterned after Meyer Lansky, in The Godfather Part II by its director, Francis Coppola. Coppola traveled to Cagney's farm in upstate New York to persuade him to accept the role, however, Cagney ultimately declined and the part was played by Lee Strassberg.
Right on, he did an awesome job here and he looks great!!!!!
Hey, here's one Bob might've used: "Yes, sir, Jimmy's the only star in history who could popularize the electric chair."
Best Hope line: "For Cagney, a love scene was when he let the other guy live". Virtually every significant star in Hollywood turned out to celebrate the life and career of Cagney: Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra, George C. Scott, Kirk Douglas, Doris Day, Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, John Wayne and Loretta Young. What a film you could make with that cast !
*My 'fave' of Cagney is his 'improve dance' with Ruby Keeler...the 'Shanghai Lil' number*
*'One-Two-Three' as the Coca-Cola executive...a movie that still 'holds up' in comedic value*
*'Cody Arthur Jarrett' in 'White Heat' and his "Top of the World Ma!" speech*
( *And of course all the 'Gangster' roles...yet Cagney's comedic timing and delivery were 'second to none' even against Hope or Crosby* )
-----------------
*Gene Kelly said of Cagney's 'dance moves' "There's no one else I've ever seen 'move' the way he can when he feels it's called-for...I asked him about it and he said "It's easy...I just think of how a woman moves her hips when she walks and practiced it and added strength to it and it seemed to work alright for me...besides, it's mainly typical 'Irish Jig' dancing that was everywhere when I was growing up"*
A lot of True Legends are no longer among us, and who knows when the next True Legends will be among us. There are some, but not many.
The One and Only "I ain't so tough" James Cagney. Jimmy .. yes you are!
One of my all time favorites.
When Hollywood still had talent.
Bob Hope, a piece of Americana!
Greatness is timeless .
I miss these guy's legendary
James Cagney died on March 30 ,1986 which is 30 years ago tomorrow March 30,2016. Wish I knew James Cagney and that I have opportunity someday to see all his movies as he was the finest actor that ever lived.Hope he is with our dear Lord and maybe it would be possible if I make it to heaven to meet him there. Looking forward to it James Cagney. In the meantime I will try to see all your movies Jim. Will look you up if and when I make it to heaven. Bet you are mixing it up with Humphrey Bogart while in heaven with Bob Hope Loretta Young, and Joan Blondell right around the corner looking for you too.
It was Easter Sunday.
Don't be sad. If they were still alive they'd be more than 100 years old.
And I dare say that Pacino would have been so in awe of Cagney that we would have seen genuine respect, even fear, for Cagney in their father-son interactions. We didn't cry for Brando when, in the film, he died of a heart attack. But we would have for Cagney. What more can I say? I need to take a break and think about this. Hell, maybe a drink and a cigar... with my fedora on as well.
Bob Hope, like Johnny Carson, eipitomized "cool".
Ohh. Thanks for this background info! Someday, somebody ought to write the before- and behind-the-scenes stories of the epic movies. I cannot imagine how deeply the movie-going world would appreciate the perspective on, and the insights into, the people, the times and the technology that have created the greatest entertainment industry that the world has known.
Was I dreaming, Was that DANNY KAYE in the audience?
I thought he died years before this!
This show was taped in 1974, Danny Kaye died in 1987
That was Roman Polanski......Danny Kaye lookalike!!!!!!!
That was Roman Polanski the child rapist.
Yeah, that caught me by surprise, too. Too bad Kaye and Hope never made a film together.
The video I watched before this was Bob and James tap dancing. Comments were not allowed. WHY?????
Great Dance Routine: James Cagney and Bob Hope.
Good question. I thought the same thing.
This would have gone on for days if everyone who wanted to speak could have spoke.
Great job Bob!!!!!
Hey Bob......is Bob there?!!!!
Yes he's there....he's listening in heaven.
If there is a Heaven ..let there be a live fliming movie on friday nights
This was 45 years ago
Pity we all have to be sad in the comments section regarding stars like this no longer exist. It like this in all comments section on You Tube. Everyone in the world is sad the old stars and singers are no longer with us, (me including), but try and cheer up folks, we are still alive. The old stars weren't sad when they were alive.
Funny you say that about being sad. I stumbled upon an infomercial hosted by Regis Philbin for the Dean Martin Show and for the next 30 minutes I watched all of these legends that are no longer with us and got all teary eyed. I'm 54 and grew up watching these stars in the late 60's and 70's and I realize that there are no real entertainers today. TV and the movies just don't do it for me. Watching this clip made me laugh and also made me miss Bob Hope. He was a fixture on TV and in the movies for years. Crosby, Martin, Gleason, Benny, Berle, Carson etc etc, they are sorely missed. I'm so lucky to have seen them at their best.
1966425 I know what you mean, I feel exactly like you too, I can't bear to sometimes switch on the television because I know there is nothing worth watching. I'm like you too, I have cried so much that these people are no longer with us. They were one of a kind.
Glad you included Gleason, the Great One, but don't forget Skelton. Bob's my all-time favorite, though. Oh, those jokes, those glorious jokes!
Old Bab always turning everything round to himself whilst reading it! Bab, why not credit the writers!
Hey, are you kiddinh? Cagnet was offerd the Gadfother. My fingers are trembling from my goosebumps as I write this! The name Corleone would have taken on a whole new meaning! Brando just lacked menace in that role, and, for that matter, so did Luca Brasi! Now, Cagney... Imagine him saying it.. yes, just picture him: bland, matter-of-fact - even flippant - but with all the fires of hell burning out of his eyes... "I made him an offer he couldn't refuse".
tryarunm YESSSS!!!
Cagney,godfather.
When jokes were funny
Yes, and wife Joanne Woodward to left of screen.
And that's why he was called Bob "It was funny back in '28" Hope.
@lou1606
yes it is
Did he punch Joan Blondell also...? It wasn't Jean Harlow either but the third blonde(!) Mae Clarke who got that grapefruit in the "Public Enemy"!
tylsimys67 even better, he pulled Joan Blondell by the hair (not really, she was gripping his wrist) and tossed her out on her bum!
I so love precode films! Lololol!
Mae Clarke, acually, Vanessa...
Man oh man what on earth has happened to Hollywood. Lol
What class.....
Couldn't give a shit about his politics, but as a stand up hope has no peers.
@omegamann71
and Jack Nicholson, too
why no montage ?? the clips from his movies??
Fun game for you: find who is alive still.
Anyone know who the woman is at 2:33 ? - to the right of Jimmy ?
looks like his adopted daughter ... he & his wife adopted a girl & a boy ...
He might've had most of his jokes written by others but Hope was and shall always remain class.
Right. He was definitely reading the index cards for the jokes.
1:35
And they gave the award to someone named Clooney !!!. Gosh, next thing we heard was that it was given to Steve Martin, Nicole Kidman in stead of Mel Gibson or Sylvester Stallone or Kevin Costner or Richard Gere names who have been symbolizing movies for the last thirty years !!
Gibson and stallone deserve it but really arnold
@TheBigValley
A shame he couldnt have memorised that speech , it wasnt exactly long ! I go along with the content though
I actually found it kind of refreshing. Teleprompters and cue cards apparently weren't available, possible, or logistically practical. Showed how effective Hope could be even reading jokes off a sheet. He was very natural, though, made no difference, and he demonstrated once again his usual flawless timing.
Cagney was thinking whether to accept Bob Hope's comments or bitch slap him!
Bob the money from The U S O yeah
Joseph Carpenter Hope gave ALL on his USO tours. He made not a nickel. Your comment Is only superseded by your blatant stupidity and ignorant hatred of a great man.
YOU are a thankless FOOL.
When Hollywood was Hollywood
Hope always was so full of himself.......it's as if this really was about him!!!!
He was incredibly generous throughout his career, doing countless free benefits for charity. He did have an image, though--that of an egotistical braggart who also pretended to be a great lover. Most stars of that era had to have a certain stage or film persona, it was all part of the fun. For instance, Benny portrayed himself as the ultimate cheapskate and tightwad--in real life, he was the exact opposite. Gleason had the persona of a boozy scene-stealer, Berle a joke-thief, etc. All of them beloved by millions.
Yes, you are correct...sadly. Unfortunately, he always turned me off...as well as being a huge womanizer.
all those damn smokers!
Yes it was called personal choice.By the way N.Korea are looking for people like you.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's one thing I can say about Bob. He can sure read his jokes......farely well.
