These are the toughest games we ever had the displeasure of subjecting our SNES to. But which is the most difficult? Will it be a classic like Contra III or Prince of Persia, a copycat entry like Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, a beloved platformer like Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest or Castlevania, an obscure one like Earth Worm Jim 2, or everyone’s favorite rage quitter, Super Ghouls & Ghosts. Only one can be the most frustrating, so let’s find out!
For this list, we’re not interested in games that are hard due to bad programming, horrible level design or buggy controls. We’re looking for titles that are intentionally challenging and totally worth playing through to the end.

Sometimes, when my kids complain about their games being too easy, I break out super ghouls or contra 3 cause I'm a good dad like that.
ICEGOD2 it’s because not cause
I finally got a chance to play Contra III thanks to the SNES Classic. Exactly how many final bosses are there? I'm up to, like, four!
Have them play the original Ninja gaiden.
Lmao
LOL! Teach those kids that Old School Rulz.
7:00 It is easy, only need some basic rules
1. Get the knife
2. Get the knife
3. *GET THE KNIFE*
Not that simply 😂
I understood that reference
that's the same thing over and over again
Indeed, but that's a rule for Ghosts 'n Goblins. In Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts you have to get the crossbow!
Ghouls and Ghosts was a nightmare
SG&G still haunts me... lol that shitty jumping where you jump and an enemy shows and you cant correct your jump, you just have to watch as you turn to bones lol
+Kitsune DesertPunk yeah not even Donkey Kong Country 2 is that difficult I can actually beat DKC 2 but I never beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts
+Jerry Gonzalves i made it ten meters for fucks sake
Yeah. Even the genisis port witch gives you super armor witch lets you do screen clearing attacks is a living nightmare
Tell me about it
Spiderman: Maximum Carnage. I def feel it deserves some recognition.
Jonathan Rivera I just posted same thing. No save points. Oh how I hated that red cartridge!!!
Hell yeah your best move drained your health
I thought so as a kid but the game becomes much easier when you learn that items are basically the key to the game.
I haven’t got to that one yet I’m doing SpiderMan X-men arcade man is it hard
Actraiser 2 is wildly difficult. Leaving it out of the list and putting the first Actraiser (which I beat as a teenager) is damn near crazy.
No Hagane!? Actraiser 2 is waaaaay harder than the first one. Pocky and Rocky also
belongs on this list over some of the other selections as well.
This!
Hopefully we'll see a sequel to this vid.
No way Actraiser was harder than Battletoads. No way.
Actraiser 2 was way harder, and was not even mentioned! SMH
Agreed. I remember beating actraiser in a thanksgiving weekend. Never got past the snake level in battlemaniacs
Actraiser2 was brutal.
Actraiser 1 wasn't hard in general, it was was actually really easy. No idea why it's anywhere near this list. The second one sure, but the first was a breeze.
Yahy yah yha
7th Saga. An SNES RPG that was as brutal as the 8 bit ones.
good call. forgot about that game. as someone above mentioned I feel super contra was not very hard... but maybe I just think that cuz the game is good and I played it enough for practice. I honestly dont remember struggling with it though
Vacuum 2 from 7th Saga should be on a top 10 list of worst enemy attacks.
Yeah but eggplant man shots from the original kid icarus made me rage the most in my childhood. It'd probably be kinder if they just 1-shot kill you, but no, you don't get to restart as if you died, you have to manually backtrack yourself and then start over. evil!
***** yeah it's funny when you attack someone at the wrong level range and see them 1shot you before your first turn. Bonus points if they 1shot you without even using their strong stats. like the dwarf warrior 1shotting you using magic before your first turn =P.. though come to think of it that might be why this game doesn't qualify cuz it's broken or whatever, kinda is.
I remeber playing that game like for five minutes and i died endlessly is reaally HARD
Hagane should of been somewhere on here no doubt.
Agreed.
13Gangland should've been number 1
13Gangland like fuck that game
this was going to be my comment, that game should have been #1
They probably couldn't find a copy XD.
I think you mean Actraiser 2. The first one, as amazing as it was, is a cakewalk.
Yeah, don't remember that game being THAT hard. Beat it on the Wii, was really fun wish it would get some new sequel.
We took that one on. ActRaiser 2 is not easy. Especially if you try to cheat and don't have the manual handy.
Actraiser 2 is the hardest game on the Snes, these guys are just morons....
Even Mario World was harder than Actraiser.
Agree with that Actraiser 2 was damn hard, the first one was easy
If there is to be a CONTRA movie,it needs to be done as a "B" Sci Fi movie with LOTS OF HARDCORE SHOOTING!
With an 80's synth soundtrack
Iam completely confused tbh, i never had a version of contra but like played the exact same game, same sounds same lvls same enemys, only difference were the main characters ... the game was called : Super Proboter Alien Rebels
in fact get the same people who made sharknado, they know how to go over tbe top
Daniel Eggers Nah,if we do,it will appear only on the shitty SyFy channel.
true
Bart's nightmare should have made the list
Rack The Jipper That game just sucks, and was poorly made
Krusty's fun house was hard too and very unclear as to what needed done
krusty's fun house is puzzling games.. but i already finished it 20 years ago.. the ending just a text from Homer thanking for eliminating the rats. lol
That game is garbage not even worth the mention
Bart's Nightmare is actually good and fun and yes, should've been on this list
I can actually beat "Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest" and "Earthworm Jim 2" no problem. :)
Yeah dkc2 isn't really that hard except getting 100 % is. I've never played any of the others XD
Yep. Me too.
we beat dkc2 because we have played it and gotten better at it training for a long time. for a first timer at plattaform gaming or even at dkc in general it is pretty pretty challenging specially if you're going to 102% route.
They dont belong on this list. They are just good examples of classic platformers designed to be a challange.
What about empire strikes back
9:18 - "All too easy."
Wait, so Darth Vader was really Shao Khan??
Bruno Fail haha nice avgn reference
He said "All too easy!" in the movie too, when he thought he was able to freeze Luke in carbonite. Thankfully for Luke, he was able to force jump his way out in time.
You actually needed to be one with the force to be able to complete any of the super Star Wars games
Evidently, nobody that worked on this video has ever played a shmup.
I agree, those are the ones that give me more trouble. Which shmup would you consider the hardest on the snes?
R-Type 3 by far
Indeed.
U.N. Squadron :)
Supernova is rough, Super R-type on pro mode as well. I think they purposefully made this list excluding shmups
Hmm, I beat earth worm jim 2 ( with help ) when i was 8?
For it's time and for being an SNES game, Diddy Kong had some amazing graphics.
Honestly, I think SNES games in general have TIMELESS graphics because of how stylistic these games are!
All three Donkey Kong games have the same style of amazing graphics, they almost look like 32bit sidescrollers (besides the lower resolution). Part two is definitely the hardest, but part one and three have some outstanding difficult levels too. I played trough them all when I was a teenager. Very good games, nice memories!
Flip #7 from DKC2 to The Lion King.
The Lion King is so easy for me I've even beating it on difficulty hard
brought back memories, thanx watchmojo!
One hard SNES game that doesn't get mentioned a lot is Super Ghouls and Ghosts' spinoff, Demon's Crest. The first level leads you in fairly gently, letting you get used to the game's beautiful visuals and gameplay before setting you off on a mode 7 map to explore. Most of the areas to explore are already unlocked, but the difficulty curve is off the charts, making you wonder which route to take to fight which boss first. Gathering every powerup you can sooner, the better your odds of getting through just one area.
Indeed. Demon's Crest is definetly on my top 10 of hardest SNES games, sometimes I got "stuck" in the game's progress and I had no clou what I have to do next and some bosses are very hard and unpredictable! Also games like Hagane, Gradius 3 and The Lion King are worth to mention.
Anyone clicked this thumbnail to see Super Ghosts n Goblin
I like your profile it's very cute
+The crazy Kids (Kit cat boy) et tu cavalier majio mello polipp?
+Leon Dixon sorry I don't understand your language
+The crazy Kids (Kit cat boy) in Google translate you get
"And you majio jumper mello polipp"
I had a hard time beating that game with emulator save states.
Out of This World. I've been trying to play that game for almost twenty years.
I was a major gamer back in the 90's and the game I had the hardest time beating for SNES was Drakkhen. It was one of the few games I never made it through.
Yes, I played Actraiser, and the variety was really impressive. Too bad they didn't include the town builder in Actraiser 2.
You can always count on WatchMojo to suspend any surprises and give you all the expected entries. Of course, in this case, the obvious choices are mostly the correct ones, so they pretty much nailed it. Top 3 are dead on. But I never found Diddy's Kong Quest all that challenging--that's the best game in the DKC series. I must just be awesome.
Donkey Kong Country 2 & Earth Worm Jim 2 are not hard games. I don't even know why this is on the list as 7 then 6.
Hahaha, Donkey Kong Country 2 WAS NOT HARD to finish!!!
Hard but should not be on is list.
+ItsCBearhere I agree. DKC2 shouldn't be on this list LIKE... AT ALL
You obviously didnt 100% it
Erlisch1337 Yes I DID, not HARD!!!!
Anyone that 100% the game would never say it was not hard. Get out of here. Show proof bud.
UN Squadron was pretty hard, even when I had memorized where all the hidden energy recharges and shields were located. I went back to the game after 20 years and tried starting on the hard mode, that was a mistake!
I played that Super Star Wars game recently (the first one) and I thought it seemed a lot harder now than back in the 90's. I guess those games were difficult, but for some reason I didn't think they were that difficult back then..

Many more to come!
Person who made this clearly hasn't played many snes games. Hagane should be on here near the top. Some of the games listed arent even hard. Also there rules said they couldn't include broken controls and they gave space ace a honorable mention.
Agree. What is Space Ace doing there? Really bad design, bad controls and too much trial and error and memorization needed to progress. It's considered one of the worst Snes games for those reasons.
The people in WatchMojo are idiots. They also constantly mispronounce titles as well, namely the second game in the Baldur's Gate series...
The mojo people didn't make the list. The fans did. They voted hence they created the list.
Let’s forget about The Simpsons Bart’s Nightmare.
7:47 "Contra III: The Alien Wars" is perhaps one of my most favorite Super Nintendo games EVER. PERIOD.
Super ghouls and ghosts and contra 3 are 2 of my favorite snes games!
I actually just beat super ghost and goblins took first day took 12 hours, gave up, and tonight took another 10 hours, finally got it!!!
That’s what makes a real gamer unique among all these aimbot pretenders. Persistence, determination, and adaptability. Good job! If you want more bragging rights, try Sekiro : Shadows Die Twice. The game was so difficult that reviewers admitted they couldn’t complete it. You can beat it as long as you take time to learn the system and practice.
I have a Super Nintendo mini and I love playing Super Ghouls and Ghosts/ Contra 3, but man they have to be the hardest games I've ever played and will attempt to beat.
I have beaten Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne and those games are a lot easier than the games I mentioned
ActRaiser was an awesome game. Glad someone is finally giving it some love.
I had all the Star Wars games on the SNES and I can say they were all brutal. I was 3/4 years old trying to play them, haven't beaten any to this day and I still go back and play them every now and again
In first one there is the secret cave at beginning the second rock steps across the canyon after the sand crawler that you take it all the way to 99 lives 6 lives at a time
Most challenging game, Spider-Man X-men arcade's revenge
Kelly Robinson that second wolverine level was beyond me
Hahaha... I'm glad someone mentioned this game
"No broken games"
*Puts Space Ace on the list*
FUCK THAT GAME
On the plus side, the music in these games are just so catchy, especially contra 3 and prince of Persia
Actraiser also had a Pro (fighting levels only) mode once regular game was completed, but it was even more difficult than the standard mode.
gradius 3 should have been here somewhere...
This game didn't mess around on normal and hard.
Yes! One of my fave games to play as a kid. Also one of the few I never actually beat!
moises bessalle that's what I just said lol!
gradius was tougher than DKC2 by a long shot
I hope Hagane is #1.
Should have been. Its the hardest SNES game in my opinion.
Possibly is, but it's just too obscure I think. This list was mostly rather well-known games.
Well I had a helluva time trying to beat Spawn!! Must've been a breeze for you guys, since you never mentioned it.
Diddy"s Kong Quest was one of my favorite games ever.. I didn't think it was all that hard though, unless you were going for the hidden DK coins to get the "true" ending. It took me forever to get every one but I did it with no help or hints.
Everybody said that DKC2 is one of the hardest games on SNES, but it wasn't harder than the first or third part imo. There are some outstanding hard levels in any DKC game, but they're absolute beatable and no bigger problem to beat for me as a kid, there were much harder SNES games not mentioned in this list, like Hagane, Rendering Ranger R2, The Lion King, Iron Commando and R-Type 3!
What about Gradius 3? one of the hardest games ive ever played to this day
bio metal was way way better
Demon's Crest was pretty difficult for me.
I think I finished that one.
The hardest game ever for me. DRAGON WARRIOR for Nintendo. I never passed 10 minutes and tried it about 5 time. Didn't make sense to me and the monsters kept popping up and killing me. I was 30 last time I gave it try.
Super Ghouls and ghosts is rough, but if you get past level 2 it starts to get easier.
I never thought Didddy Kongs Quest was among the hardest one. Hard but not top 20 hard... But good list overall. Battletoad right up there.
Great and hard game all of them but... where is HAGANE?! Com'on this badass game should be at least in the top 5!! :P...
I agree. So hard, but so cool.
Sunset Riders and Hagane definitely deserve to be on this list.
Nah, Sunset Riders was hard, but it was fair on the SNES. My little sister and i beat it after some practice.
The 4 player Arcade version was utterly amazing, if a bit on the unfair side.
Han Daimond yes!!
Yes. That was very hard, but playable.
Great list
10. Zombies Ate My Neighbors!
9. Prince of Persia
8. Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
7. Donkey Kong Country 2
6. Earthworm Jim 2
5. Ag Grazer
4. Castlevania: Dracula X
3. Super Ghouls N Ghosts
2. Contra III: The Alien Wars
1. Super Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
Top 10 hardest Sega Genesis games next
Aladin and Sonic pinball will be there.
Sonic Pinball was hard!
SEGA SUCKS
Comix Zone, Dynamite Headdy, The Revenge of Shinobi, Strider, Golden Axe 3, Alex Kidd, Super Thunder Blade, Kid Chameleon, Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Battletoads, Ghouls n Ghost, Earthworm Jim 1 and 2, Ecco the Dolphin, Ecco The Tides of Time, Batman and Robin, X-Men, and Aladdin
Rafael Martinez No
Earthworm Jim 1 is way harder than 2, Castlevania 3 on the NES is way easier than 1 or 2, and Alien Wars is not nearly as hard as Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Empire Strikes back is a bitch, but also not as hard as Super Ghouls and Ghosts. The ranking is pretty bad on this list.
I have a question for you. Have you ever heard of Hagane? Because that game should have been #1 by a LOOONNNG shot.
No it wasn´t. I bought and still have it for my SNES
+Jordan Brown yeah that game is hard
empire strikes back is much harder that super ghost and goblins dude
lol Castlevania 3 is way harder than the 1st or the 2nd
Of the 10 games listed, I only played Super Empire Strikes Back on the SNES (I played a few others on the Wii Virtual Console years later) back in the 90's and I can agree to its difficulty, especially the Dagobah level.
I thought Contra was going to be #1 :) haha This was a cool video
Castlevania Dracula X released in 1995 not 1991
I say _Super Return of the Jedi_ is harder. _Super Empire Strikes Back_ doesn't have an impossible escape-from-the-Death-Star final level.
KingsleyIII That final stage took me over an hour to complete
Gio 789 yeah....i worked on that last level on and off for a few days before i beat it.
I hope something bad happened to who ever made that level lol.
That level did suck. I think it stalled me from beating the game for like years. It was worse than the Chewbacca boss, or the swap boss on Dagobah in Super Empire. I don't think the Super Star Wars games should be on here.
Nothing frustrated me more than playing the Chewbacca cloud city level. Neither Boba Fett or Slave I were the problems, once you figured out a good strategy, it was simple when you got to that part... no... fucking Zuckus... hard to kill and does that spin jump that knocks you off and kills you.
Me and my brother grew playing so many of those games. My favourite was super gouls n ghost, empire strikes back, and DK, surprised Starfox didn't make the list some ppl found that hard like myself, it took long time to find out the secret stages or levels.
That death scream in Alien Wars is ingrained in me from how many times I’ve died. Lol
Act Raiser is not hard. Great game, but not hard!
holy wtf. Super Empire at number 1!? that was easy! the only thing mind bogglingly difficult about that game was the Darth Vader battle, and that only because if you wanted to live through it, the battle would take well over 30 minutes. pain in the butt? sure. most difficult game on the SNES? hardly. booooooooooo. time to redo your list!
ftr though, thanks for not putting any Mega Man games on the list. while difficult at times, a good investment of time and effort plants it in the middle ground, even MM7.
Vader was a bitch, until you figure out that you can't simply button mash against him and win. I like that the game developers required you to block and strike when he paused on his attacks. Also, when he starts throwing shit around, you can break the items and find health containers IIRC!
Vader was the hardest boss, but I think the level that gave me the overall death toll was that part of Cloud City where you are jumping around outside on the collapsing platforms and dealing with these asshole bounty hunters who knock you off the ledges.
My best strategy for this game was using Han or Chewie with the heat seeking missiles. They weren't the most powerful weapons but they were the best for me when dealing with bosses and enemies where I could worry more about dodging attacks and not aiming at them.
It didn't drop health, but it would drop force refills, so you could use force heal.
Even if it’s Japan exclusive I consider Fire Emblems Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776 to be hard games with difficulty spikes. Those are also the hardest of the Fire Emblem games.
To see Super TESB number 1 takes me back. I was heading into my senior year of high school and played this game every day. I only recall two levels that were a challenge but damn were they a challenge!! Boss battle on Dagobah, the boss monster was Dagaboh spelled backwards and the level after Han is frozen in carbonite and you play as Chewbacca trying to rescue him. This level actually caused me to inflict bodily harm on myself and damage the doors in my bedroom. The funny thing is Super Star Wars wasn't a big deal for me. Super ROTJ I never beat! Made it to the last level have to fly the Millenium Falcon out of the Death Star with the fire ball chasing and it caught me every time no matter how much of open space I saw!
Scott Stark
Bro me too, i hated the end but loved how epic the finale was... Good times... I think as a kid my reflexes and timing were more on par... Now im just a fuking punch drunk dummy
Anyone play Secret of Evermore? Holy shit that game was hard
If you have the patience to level up both you and your weapons it's not hard at all.
Saberwaisen 1995
Yeah for me that's impossible lol
Played it beat it so yeah I agreed.
daoswarrior2033 I just finished beating it a few days ago
It's not so hard once you know what to do. I played it again many years later and I feel like it was very unfocused, giving you 4 swords, 4 spears, and 4 axes, all of which level up separately and a bunch of alchemy that had a lot of recipes that could go obsolete.
Difficult games are a good thing, games are way to soft these days. BTW: Get off my lawn!
I like the games now that want you to win. When I try to play old games I used to be great at I can't believe I was ever good at them.
When I played this as a kid I swore it was called "Diddy Kong's Quest". In my thirties I played it again and realised it was Diddy's Kong Quest the whole time. And I played it a lot too. Can't believe I had the name wrong for so long.
brings back nightmarish memories of how hard Super Ghouls n' Ghost and Contra III were
U.N Squadron needs to be on this list
Totally agree.
That conveyor belt boss...
UN Squadron remains one of only two arcade SHMUPS I could regularly clock on one credit. R-Type-in all it's iterations is much tougher, as is Gradius.
Super Ghouls N Ghosts would be a hard game if it wasn't for the fact there's no real punishment for dying a lot. Infinite continues doesn't make for a hard game.
But it's still a hard game
Sound like u haven't played that game
Played and beat both that and Ghosts N Goblins. Both have the same issue. Unlimited continues and no real consequence for dying a lot.
You can beat it fully on easy mode and it's of average difficulty, there are at least 30-40 games on the SNES that are harder. The original is miles harder
Having to beat it in one straight sitting because of no game saves or passwords to return to levels was a dick move by the developers though. That's where the difficulty laid for me. Thank god for emulators!
I never realised how big a variation the SNES port of Prince of Persia was from the original Macintosh version I played as a little boy. I thought it was just a straight port. The music makes a hell of a difference, since the original only had music whenever you cleared a level, with a small sting when you find an item.
Honestly I think the difficulty of Diddy's Kong Quest is considerably exaggerrated. It's not THAT hard, although it did have a few very frustrating stages. I say that because, while I've come to accept these days that I'm not actually _that_ good a gamer (although I think part of that is due to slowing down with age) I beat Diddy's Kong Quest completely and don't remember it as being as BRUTALLY tough as some other games.
Actraiser was hell, though, especially when you're expected to run a gauntlet of all the bosses in the game one after another before the final boss... with only one magic bar (you don't get magic back if you die). And then you face the final boss himself, again with no rest.
that Snes version of POP is probably the best version ever made.....the music soundtrack is UNREAL for 16 bit and the enhancements over the PC version of the time was incredible.
Phalanx. That game was brutal. There was no way to beat it let alone even get past the second stage on the hardest difficulty.
Yes, Phalanx was a nightmare.
playing Phalanx now days.. i can't pass the 3th stage.. but at the time i bought the game many years ago I was able to complete the game with 1 life...
SUPER Star Wars:
The Empire Strikes Back
definitely is a challenging SNES game. nice list.
Earthworm Jim is a boss.
i loved Super Empire Strikes Back. Yeah it was tough but also a lot of fun
This is a pretty good list. However, there are still more oscure yet good games that a way more difficult. But for well-known and critically acclaimed games this list is great. Except Actraiser. It's really easy. In fact it's so easy it could easily be in a "Top Ten Easiest SNES games" list :D

Was Hagane even suggested for the list? Because that should have been #1. By a LOOOONNNG shot!
+Jordan Brown I doubt they're aware of its existence
Jordan Brown I never got far in that game since I had so many snes games...maybe one day I'll start playing it again...
You guys forgot the ninja gaiden trilogy for SNES
Actraiser 1 it's not so hard... the part 2 it's really hard. For me Super Ghost and Goblins it's the must difficult game in SNES.
Battletoads and Super Ghouls and Ghosts are right up there for damn near impossible. Contra was tough but not impossible once you got the patterns to the bosses.
That’s funny; I beat Act Raiser in two days (it’s still one of my favorites, though).
I loved Super Ghouls and Ghosts soooo much! I remember I flight tooth and nail for a long time and finally beat it only to get trolled and sent back to the beginning. I wasn't even mad, I was just in shock and started laughing say "WHAT!?!? HOW!?!?" Only Miyazaki at From seems to have any fondness for that era of gaming. Back then many of the games didn't want to be beaten and finishing them was a mark of deft skill that gave you plenty of bracing rights and made you an indispensable resource to any kids looking to beat the game. It help you make friends and gain a reputation as a badass even if you were a runt.
Gamings had its advancements but I feel like that environment is impossible to recapture because games are for the most part cinematic experiences made to be beaten and even for the few hard games all you need is a walkthrough.
Old school games were like individual arts to master. Beating one game didn't make you much better at the next because it was largely based on memory so you never just became a good gamer you could become a champ at Mario but need extensive work on your Ninja Gaiden skills.
I remember diligently mapping out all the Metroid secrets and proudly showing my friends all the cool shit they'd missed. Oh well, guess I'm just nostalgic, but being a kid I'm the 80s was awesome. I'm sure gaming for kids these days has far more to love then we had in the 80s. Just some things they won't ever get because the games may still be around but the world around them has changed.
Same thing. I was born in '82 and whitnessed the best time in video gaming, the 8bit and 16bit aera. Even today I play mostly 16bit and arcade games from the early and mid 90s, games back then were real and mercyless, without any help from the internet, savestates and let's plays, just hardcore gaming in its purest form. Today's kids have it way to easy, and I'm sure it's less funny.
Was only talking on my channel today about ghosts and goblins for the nes. THAT was hard.
I beat PoP for the SNES in an hour and 25 mins. I basically memorized all the levels and correct paths. Best Summer ever.
Good list.
DAYUM!!! #2 Contra III (7:48) got no chill😂😂😂
U.N. Squadron, Firepower 2000, James Bond Jr. and the Super Star War series were the hardest games I can remember that I enjoyed.
The worst hard games I remember are Last Action Hero, The Rocketeer, and the T2 Arcade shooter.
Contra 3 is a tough game, but it is just about learning the enemy patterns. I can almost finish hard mode without a single death. When I am conditioned anyway. I think Legend of the Mystical Ninja was quite a tough game, especially towards the end.
Yo @WatchMojo... What about,
"Out Of This World?".... you guys obviously have never heard of it or it would definitely be in your top ten! Hell, it's probably top 3 hardest game of all time!
Kind of surprised to see Actraiser on this list, especially so high. When I got it at about 13 or 14 years old, I beat it in a single day. Love the game but I plowed through it.
Actraiser isn't very hard for the most part, but the boss rush at the end is nearly impossible to beat.
which are the just right of a challenge games, thats what i would like to know..i love these best..a lot are too hard seems like..and only a very very few are too easy..then theres the greats that are just right and have a saving progress feature or passcode and that are good enough to keep beating and coming back to lots of times till finally beat them
I actually replayed Super Ghouls and Ghosts a few years ago as an Emulator...but thats not special i know but there was this one level that was bugged out...like the sprites and floor were missing so it was really hard to beat. Of course i saved before which would not be possible without an emulator. I felt that it was fair being the level was bugged and being as a kid i never got this far in the game i had no idea what i was up against. Point of the story was i ended up beating the game and that level specifically made me proud being it was a long process of trial and error. Game was and is great.
I loved Wild Guns and getting the true ending while playing solo is a challenge done right.
The Lost Vikings was so unfair to me.
UN Squadron should be on the list. Tough until you learn the patterns. One of those AsciiPads was crucial.
Holy crap, some good games on this list. I love Earthworm Jim.
Zombies ate my Neighbors (SNES) , one of my absolute favorites. You have to start at the beginning, so you cn collect weapons and items, the codes are garbage, they do not save items. I have beaten ZAMN, several times. I am proud of that. The trick for me is to pause and take breaks. I didn't do that as a teen because I thought passwords would keep info, plus the coaxil cable, you could only do one thing, change channel and its fuzz. Didn't have a AV out splitter , so you can change channels while the game is in pause.
It was the time of the SNES, the Mega Drive, the Amiga, the PC, and still of the Arcades.
The peak of Jump 'n' Runs and Shoot 'n' Ups.
It was the best time of gaming. Unreachable.
Act Raiser 2 was impossible for me. The 1 is great but not so hard, is well balanced.
I played and finished many times the Star Wars trilogy games, some segments were hard but I don't remember those games as difficult as everyone's says....
Act Raiser 2 makes the first game look like a walk in the park. You also can’t game over on the sim building mode either from the first game.
9:38 I'm sorry, but is that sequence ever explained in-game? I could never make sense of it in my childhood.
