  • Woo ya girls first Shin Megami Tensei game!! This was a wild ride and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect other than demons. These are my thoughts on Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne! I hope you enjoy!! :)
Reawaken your inner demon in a modernized version of the acclaimed ATLUS classic, Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster. What begins as a normal day in Tokyo turns out to be everything but, when the Conception - an ethereal apocalypse - is invoked. The remains of the world is swallowed by chaos, as a demonic revolution descends into a broken city. Caught between a battle of Gods and demons the choices you make can bring life, rebirth, or death, and determine who triumphs.

The SMT spinoff that came immediately after Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga is more in line with what you would love. A bit more QoL, Way more character focus and all the same dungeon design and atmosphere.

Yeah, DDS's story and overall structure are definitely more friendly towards series newcomers too. Shame the tradeoff is the lack of demon fusion, though Mantras do scratch that "customize your party to your liking to an absurd degree" itch.

The problem is that, like every Nintendo handled JRPG , it's DISGUSTINGLY EXPENSIVE. Like, 300 euro/$ expensive. On top of that, 3ds is region locked so I'd need the PAL version only. Seriously, it's getting ridiculous. I wanted Radian History : Perfect Chronology, but you literally cannot find it for less than 150/200€ if you're lucky. Pure madness. The only really expensive ones i have are Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest V: the Heavenly Bride, bought them NEW SEALED, PAL, and both in "bundle" for """just""" 130 eu (not bad considering they sell for more than that EACH, for used versions nonetheless)

@@evilblanketfish I was indeed confusing them, but after a quick search on Vinted, I can confirm that both Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 for PS2 PAL still cost A LOT, like around 150 euros for the both of them.... so the fact remains: every ATLUS game is overpriced as fuuuuuck (especially the PAL version)

Nocturne's best character is the world itself. The individual people do represent different ideologies but in 2004 when I was 17 this was the first game to I introduce those ideologies to me and asked me to think about the world differently than I had ever been before. But what does change and grow and make you empathize with it throughout the game is the world itself. The world state changes a lot and you keep playing because you want to see what happens to it, rather any individual person.

Maybe it's just inherited from the game's PS2 lineage, but I really appreciate the colossal font size; makes it a lot more comfortable to read. I really hate when modern games still use the same old 12pt font size, which is super freaking tiny at 4k resolution.

I also prefer a very character driven game, but SMTs are a exception to that rule. I absolutely love the atmosphere and how the world itself and its moral conflicts gets to you.
I also agree on the difficulty aspect, people say as if it's a turn based "Souls Like", but in reality you just have to get smart about elements.
You should definitely check SMTIV, I'm obsessed with everything about that game. The OST is my favourite part, being second only to how the story choices made me rethink how I position myself in society.
Lastly, girl, I'm living for this SMT makeup you got going on here. Slaaaaaaaay that shit hunty

Honestly, to answer your question, in some ways, Nocturne fits the bill. Like you, I am very character-focused, but also, I often find very bleak things tedious and dull, since some people really seem to confuse hope with poor writing and go far too hard in the other direction. Nocturne evades those pitfalls and there's this feeling of anticipation in the air despite the cruel circumstances, a new world waiting to be born. Atmosphere in this game, like you say, is so strong.

Yeah, the mainline SMT series isn't so much about the characters, it's more about the ideas that presented, and making you, as a player, consider your own thoughts and philosophies. The endings aren't really 'good', like wtih the characters it's moreso "what is the implication of what I have chosen", if that makes sense.
I agree in that I typically prefer games with strong characters and stories, but having a series that can be more philosophical (I guess that's the right word? idk what else to call SMT's approach) can be a nice change of pace.

The real reason why people found this hard back in the day was due to a multitude of factors. Many people who play JRPGs didn't play any difficult ones previously. As much as I love Final Fantasy, the gameplay of them really did major damage to people who play JRPGs. Final Fantasy wrongly told people that buffs and debuffs were worthless. And this being the first game that used the press turn and many people's first Megaten game made it harder. We all know now not to use bufu on Jack Frost.

I really love the battle system. Honestly, I think part of why this game has a reputation for being difficult is that if you sometimes, people can build themselves or team in a way that is totally not able to handle an opponent, like I remember being frustrated with one that reflected physical attacks when I had a very high attack team, but it's also relatively easy to just restructure your team, etc, to handle that.

I'm 20 hours into this game for the past couple of months on the PS2 version and it's been an ordeal. Demon recruitment is so fruitless and time consuming, and yet I feel like I have to do it since summoning old demons from the compendium would cost all of my money that I need for healing and reviving. SMT players claim these games aren't grindy, but since money is so tight and level determines what party you can have in the first place I often wonder if we're talking about the same game. Every single guide I consulted on the first challenging boss fight recommended at bare minimum a demon that was level 18 while I was level 11. Grinding is the only way I could have gotten this far.

    • @PelvicGaming
      @PelvicGaming  Před 2 lety

Ok I'll give you that. Demon recruitment is so scares and nearly fruitless it's easy to get frustrated. I spent nearly an hour trying to get a that red fairy girl in Shibuya. Just because I liked her so much. Money -for me- was only an issue at the beginning of the game and the very end since I needed to fuse my super high end demons to make even HIGHER demons. While level does determined how strong your party is, I found I was usually around the level needed for w/e demon was best for the area I was in.
That said, again I really do understand how this game isn't for everyone.

It's like me with the Dark Souls games because I am a very heavily narrative focused person but the narrative in souls games is rather lacking unless you heavy search for it, yet I still find myself absolutely diving head first into the games and never regretting my time spent with them.
I highly recommend SMTIV and IV Apocalypse since you enjoy more character focused stories as well as, if you don't mind old fashioned style 1st person dungeon crawler games, SMT Strange Journey Redux as it shares many horror styled themes with Nocturne while giving more focus to characters and narrative as a whole.

Huge agree on your opinion of the characters. It honestly bothers me how many people use notcurne as an example for a good narrative when in reality it's just a really good premise with a bunch of random shit put together to explore its "deep themes". I love the game but I'd never play it again because of how long everything takes and I think the wonder of exploring would just be gone on a repeat playthrough. It's honestly the same with SMT strange journey if you ever get to that one. The only SMT with really good characters that I'd recommend (other than persona) is the first devil survivor. That one's amazing.

I'm glad you made it through the game and enjoyed it even if it had some less than stellar aspects. Not sure if I want to play this but it has my interest as a maybe sometime in the future kind of game 👀 for now I'm content with playing through SMT IV, which we only got digitally in Europe, and then I have SMT V in my backlog. I heard it's more similar to Nocturne than IV so not sure how that bodes, but I'm hoping it has some QoL improvements at least! IV is really good and eventually I look forward to Apocalypse too, probably also digitally since it's more convenient for me. I'm trying to fill up my 3DS SD card with games before it's too late :')
for a game I thought I would hate... maybe Bloodborne? I liked the aesthetic of it but I knew it was risky because I'm usually such a lazy gamer. it was horrible in the beginning and I really regretted my purchase, then I finally found my way to a boss and didn't struggle too much with it, and something clicked and now it's one of my favourite games although I only played through it once. I could only do a little bit at a time because I got so scared lol.

Just finished [1 route of] SMT 5 this week and wow idk if this is a spoiler, character wise it seems it's similar if not worse. This makes me think it was a design decision to undercook the characters and themes and not that they ran out of time/ refused to delay it. Nocturne is a nuanced game. You have to speak with every NPC to get the most out of it.
It’s also more about the gameplay/narrative. The story is to be taken as a whole, rather than bit by bit. Persona is at the opposite of the spectrum

  • @jynxce

Can't really fault SMT Nocturne here since it's always been about who gets to shape the world. It was my 1st SMT experience that drug my in to ATLUS' universe of games, so I can't help but stan-by. It wasn't until the Persona series when they really finessed the formula for so much more beyond the basics, so can't blame those working backwards. All the same, anyone that truly presses deeper will always find that it offers so much more.

If you liked this game i think SMT5 is also pretty similar (both good and bad) with a few differences. Demon negotiation is more consistent, with more entertaining/personalized interactions that actually connect with it's lore. The combat system is also built upon, with elements from the 4 duology and some of its own. There is more of an emphasis on exploration similar to a Xenoblade game, and thus traveling is much more forgiving than other entries, mostly foregoing a dungeon crawling type experience. Other than that, they're pretty similar gameplay and storywise, though I will say personally I found the endings of 5 to be a bit more thought provoking when compared with eachother.

Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor and Strange Journey have amazing characters, as does IV.
IV apocalypse tries to be more character driven but they're ultimately quite badly written sadly. Still a great game!
V has a very disappointing story at least in the beginning of the game but you'll find yourself sucked in by the same elements Nocturne threw at you, with a great emphasis on seamless, fun and rewarding exploration. Demons and your interactions with them are better and funnier than ever, they're what makes the world feel lived-in.

There's some things that I think you've forgot to mention in the video.
The base game for the Switch and PS4 versions is the japanese only Maniax Chronicles edition which replaces Dante with Raidou and that for those who want Dante instead will have to pay for the Maniax DLC. The PC version of Nocturne HD has vanilla/og Nocturne as the base game which means no Raidou nor Dante and none of the extra stuff from the two other versions. Maniax Chronicles (Raidou) is free DLC on PC and Maniax (Dante) is paid DLC on PC.
Also, doing a magic build for the MC is not ideal because the magic stat sucks in Nocturne that is why the strength build is a much better option and fitting because the Demi-Fiend's unique skills are strength based.

It's really vindicating to hear someone else say that this game wasn't that hard; I haven't played this in almost 20 years, but I remember having trouble on exactly 3 bosses throughout the game, and had I been more thorough in my demon collection, that would've been only 2. As for the characters, the only thing I remember about any of them is how out-of nowhere their sudden obsessions with their ideologies came from, but I'll gladly sacrifice characters for an incredible world to explore, and this absolutely delivers; it did also help to reinforce the sense of isolation and desolation of the world, and to make you choose your ideology based on the actual ideology, because it's not like you were going to do it out of attachment to the characters that stand behind them, and even the endings suck if you don't care about the ideology behind them. I also loved the demon fusion and spent countless hours with it; as a mythology buff - once upon a time, I even wrote a demonic compendium of over 400 entries for a Shin Megami Tensei fangame that never got off the ground - I was really impressed that they did their homework with the little synopses for each of the demons. Totally agree on the music, and the developers did, too; that's why the original PS2 version (at least the one we got in North America) had a CD soundtrack that had... I think it was over 30 tracks on it. Really glad you enjoyed this one!

Digital Devil Saga, the games that came after Nocturne, has the same things that made Nocturne wonderful but with a stronger cast.
Nocturne isn't really that hard once you figure out how it works. These days, you can't button mash your way through any RPG, so its difficulty falls in line with most games today
