  • Fired graduate student workers from the University of California, Santa Cruz facilitate and moderate a panel discussion with UC Boycott signatories, who had pledged their support by refusing to speak at any University of California campuses. This conversation examines the structures of academic labor and how we might best leverage support for graduate students, including our current strategies of wildcat strikes and speaker boycotts.
Shortly after this event took place, it was announced that UC Santa Cruz would reinstate those 41 graduate student workers who had been fired for strike activities. More information can be found here: www.vice.com/en_us/article/xg.... On August 21, 2020, the Student Conduct Board will decide whether or not to overturn Carlos Cruz's two-year suspension. Carlos is the only graduate student worker to face suspension for his participation in the wildcat strike.
FUC is a weekly online series that hosts conversations around labor, labor movements, de-commodified knowledge, and the future of the university and higher education. It is facilitated by rent-burdened graduate students at the University of California in solidarity with the COLA movement.
