History of Power Rangers is a series where Linkara looks at every season of the show and offers critical analysis!
The History of Power Rangers FINALLY returns! The Rangers have been lead by a giant floating head, a guinea pig, and a useless Princess… eh, why not a dog? SPD Concludes with our main villain getting replaced by a magnificent tentacle monster.

So while Linkara added an edit in About Mark Harris, I'd like to spend a comment expanding upon such for the unawares. As Harris IS the credited person responsible for 'Kalishplosions'; in every incident of that issue in the Disney, Neo-Saban and Hasbro era's his name is cited in the credits as the stunt coordinator for them (czcams.com/video/MdpZ1LE97so/video.htmlsi=djNHQwdXYOs5Gj4f&t=1328). Thus showing through those credits that Neither Kalish nor Sakamoto Were culpable for them. This has been known publicly in the fandom for a LONG Time; and was something being called out even before Linkara made the original SPD video a decade ago, yet kept being spread because those that believed it often did not look for evidence outside of Power Rangers to confirm or deny culpability...even as such examples became more and more prevailent with time.
This is not a 'blame Linkara' post, by the way; a LOT of people spread this to-this-day with no Malicious intent, to the point the 'Kalishplosions' page on the Ranger wiki has suffered edit wars over proper credit for them even when sources are cited, to say nothing about how bad TVTropes Still is over this and similar misinformation. Ergo, the youtube links throughout this post providing video evidence of such in play.
For The problem effects in question DO predate Bruce Kalish's time on the show, and it makes no sense for the screenwriter to be responsible for effect-works. They Start in Ninja Storm, and become more prevailent IN Dino Thunder.
While Koichi Sakamoto *Stopped directing for Power Rangers after Wild Force*, at least with any regularity for it to be him who was responsible. With one of his best works he did for Power Rangers before he got sent upstairs being his directing on "Forever Red". (czcams.com/video/KAVU-tvHpyk/video.html) If one has few complaints about "Forever Red"'s stunt work, that's because that is to the Sakamoto standard seen of his later work (czcams.com/video/CuqZQVnad14/video.html) , with him taking the techniques he and fellow stunt Director Makoto Yokoyama developed during their time on Power Rangers (which began with Zeo) back with them to Japan to develop them further.
He moved to a producer position after Wild Force (that being part of the reason why he was mis-blamed), while he and his stunt team split their time between Japan and New Zealand to begin doing action scenes for Toei on Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, as well as Tsuburaya on the Ultra Series (czcams.com/video/b3SFwyrbMVA/video.html); and at the time of SPD's production he was also doing some work on Magiranger (adapted as Power Rangers Mystic Force) as part of him building in-roads with the company; him transitioning to full-time directing for them and others when Power Rangers' production closed out at RPM (czcams.com/video/jmM6Kqm5ySs/video.html). He still does work for them (czcams.com/video/8hSQoUIhL2w/video.html), and has even directed several movies (czcams.com/video/ME9Lt8eEN0Y/video.html) both part of those franchises (czcams.com/video/iZi-WNSe0Sw/video.html czcams.com/video/PZjxLay8Rjs/video.html) and independantly such as The live-action adaptation of "Hurricane Polymar" that Discotek Media recently imported (czcams.com/video/e0TWrjULbnU/video.html).
Linkara has even reviewed other Tokusatsu series which features Sakamoto's Directing outside of the 'History of Power Rangers' videos; he was one of the main directors of "Kamen Rider Fourze" (czcams.com/video/QSyzq8dF_cA/video.html). And in absolutely no credited work of his has he Ever showcased *ANYTHING* that even remotely approaches the problems of the misnomered "Kalishplosions", they are fully inconsistent with Sakamoto's directing. Sakamoto's use of Pyrotechnics and other stunt and effects-work emphasizes the strength of either the hero or villain in turn, not weakness as became PR's problem. He Showcased them able to resist being damaged by the attacks they receive or an enemy presenting how strong they are to be a legitimate threat. (czcams.com/video/lrBqm6HR4co/video.html) If an attack misses or does nothing to the assaulted it showcases the capability of those involved to dodge/Deflect/resist injury and their will to fight on. (czcams.com/video/J2kAq1DxX1E/video.html) These are all things absent from Kalishplosions, which make those harmed by them look weak and pathetic and as an excuse to break from battle or exclude participants from it, especially when such is staged to look like they deliberately missed so-as to not harm the actors...which is also a consequence of the decline in cinematography in the second unit/stunt team when Harris fully Took over.
For Harris was hired on to replace Sakamoto beginning with Ninja Storm; which is why one *begins* to see 'Kalishplosions' two full seasons before Bruce Kalish even entered the picture as a showrunner, only for them to become ubiquitous when he fully took over.
So When was Mark Harris promoted into being the head/Full-time stunt Coordinator/action Director for Power Rangers?
    At *SPD*.
Which ties into the other name in the matter that has been frequently overlooked; Makoto Yokoyama, the other senior stunt director and choreographer that had worked on Power Rangers Since Zeo, who had in turn become the senior-most stunt director beginning with Ninja Storm when Sakamoto was sent upstairs.
Makoto Yokoyama resigned from doing Power Rangers' stunts after Dino Thunder, that being *WHY* Harris was promoted.
He left in 2005 to begin his work for the "Garo" series, the Adult-demographic Horror-focused tokusatsu Franchise Created by Super sentai/Kamen Rider monster designer Keita Amemiya. (czcams.com/video/2nLS2DmxDDE/video.htmlsi=ymHh2e0Oa59UHoeO&t=1052 czcams.com/video/aD71cRr_foM/video.html) If those reading this have not heard of it (or have only seen the franchise's anime incarnations) I recomend giving it a watch; as a LOT of the series is available through home video purchase or streaming or even here on youtube (czcams.com/video/2n2hFQr58aw/video.html), and was even successful enough to have had a tie-in event with the MMO Final Fantasy 14 where one could aquire their armor which is still part of that game today. And a lot of the techniques used in the series were first pioneered in Yokoyama's time on Power Rangers (czcams.com/video/mqOhibuwo9k/video.html).
But again, that is telling where all the talent went to cause this devolution; it went back to the Japanese productions.
Whereas Mark Harris remained working on Power Rangers through the end of Cosmic Fury and "Once and Always", thus why the original effectswork problems that started at Ninja Storm and became overbearing with SPD never sufficiently improved (Some would say it got WORSE), even when the franchise started back up again. (czcams.com/video/Sk7fwFbQuVA/video.html)
Ergo, again, why Kalish has been wrongly blamed in this as well since the issue outlived his tenure, and the coincidental timing obfuscated the responsibility.
With Sakamoto directing on super sentai however, that in turn leads to why this is STILL a mistaken assumption left in circulation. As series that made heavy use of Sakamoto's Directing have seen adaptation into Power Rangers (of note being Kyoryuger and Ryusoulger being adapted into Dino Charge and Dino Fury, respectively czcams.com/video/CloKnJqrN8k/video.html czcams.com/video/1j7Ih27begw/video.html), and those who have Not seen the source material will not always be able to tell where the japanese stunts for suited action scenes end and where the Power Rangers original ones begin. Which only ultimately adds TO the confusion even among the well-meaning.

Fun fact I learned regarding the Sentai. The Morpher's judgment feature apparently sends the information to a planet where time flows faster, so in the time it takes for the Suspect to be judged, an 8-month investigation occurs to see if they are guilty or not, so there's a bit more due process there, we just don't see it.

The Sentai is also more willing to dive deep into real problems and concepts despite still having a relatively young audience. The Sentai original of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger had the Green Ranger being brothers to the Red Ranger (By adoption I believe; Green being Adopted.) However, the story reveals that Green was to follow a similar fate to the main Rangers and enter a sleep, but his site collapsed and he died then. One Heel-Face Turn later, his life was measured by a Green Candle. If he left the Realm of the Dead, the candle would burn shorter while in the Living World, and once the Candle was gone, Green was dead. And that's what happened: The Green Ranger dies. He at least gave the Shield and Dragon Dagger to Red, at least.
Incidentally, kids who liked the Green Ranger wrote to the station, begging to bring the Green Ranger back and wanted him to have a happy life. However, the producers basically said "No" because they wanted to show that, even for Rangers, things are still rough, and they can still die. So in Zyuranger, the Green Ranger stayed dead.
I don't think I need to go over how Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers handled the Green Ranger. But similar event did happen; kids liked the Green Ranger and wanted him back. We know how that story goes.

Surprised Linkara wasn't told why Sam/Omega Ranger is a ball of light. Disney refused to pay for another main cast member, so the ball of light was a compromise. Kalish actually stated that he regrets doing it that way and would have cut him entirely if not for Sentai footage.

Thus they can have as much time as needed to fully deliberate and come up with a proper verdict.

Something of note: Power Rangers SPD and its Sentai counterpart, Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger have an...interesting relationship. Namely, Dekaranger has actually adapted plot points and costumes that were exclusive to SPD for team-ups they had with other Sentai teams after their series was done, and for anniversary specials they did. Hell, there is a Japanese dub of Power Rangers SPD, and the actors voicing them in Japanese are the Dekaranger cast. It's REALLY weird, but also kinda cool, and shows that Super Sentai and Power Rangers can inspire and have a positive influence on each other.
Speaking of, though, Dekaranger was actually my first Sentai. Beforehand, I was solely Power Rangers. I knew a little bit about Super Sentai, but it was mostly word of mouth. One day, during CZcams's infancy, I saw a video called Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger: The Movie, and I was stunned, because I had no idea the Sentai got theatrical releases (I'd later find out EVERY season had movies shown in theaters). So, I watched it...and I was suddenly hooked. I wanted to watch more of Dekaranger, learn more about this team, and learn more about Super Sentai in general. So, I kinda have an interesting relationship with Dekaranger as well, and to SPD by extension.

In a different series, they might've been able to get away with "Well the previous villains aren't really known across the universe" but like...Lord Zedd Exists. The series has wrapped around so much that Zedd can never NOT be notorious. Because of that, the United Alliance of Evil is known and Zordon nuking the universe would be known by future threats. Which leads to a domino effect of connections where these villains hear how Earth humans defeated at least Scorpious' forces, Lothor, the Fearcats and other factions going after a crown, the Armada, and...well Galaxy Warriors was apparently a popular show. Idk their standing as evil space forces, but they had to be known by default.
Maybe it's nothing but arrogance on Omni's part. Like they admit Gruumm didn't have a crazy amount of the universe conquered even 20 years back, while a lot of the villains before him were taking things over for decades, centuries, millennia in some cases. (Sledge's forces had 65 million years under their belt, but they're from an alt dimension). So you just have to assume it's pure hubris from a being who wants to be referred to as something like "Omni" and "The Magnificence".
Also If I was Grumm stuck in 2004, I'd be less worried about building the empire again, and more worried about getting into conflicts with the 2004 counterpart. Who may have not conquered as much, but would still have way more resources to take me out of the equation. Although it would be funny if 2004 Gruumm just asks "Wait why do we choose to battle Earth in 20 years? There's like a dozen ranger teams down there. Remember what they did to Zedd!?"

Okay, I love musous, and while I would immediately buy a Power Rangers one... I'm also not entirely sure if the series would really fit one. It's generally more focused on smaller scale individual fights, large groups instead of armies, where the Rangers are able to overcome at least in part thanks to their teamwork instead of just with overwhelming firepower. That's what makes the Shadow Ranger's debut so effective and memorable: I'm not sure if it's the first time we've seen that many footsoldiers taken on at once, but it's definitely the first time we've seen them taken down by a single Ranger before. And, conversely, I'd say that's also what makes the introduction to Super Megaforce so frustrating: the Rangers just immediately and casually annihilate an entire invasion force devastating Earth, in a manner that I don't think is out of place for a musou game- and it's treated with the same level of respect as in a musou, i.e. neither the Rangers nor the Armada really seem to CARE how impressive such a feat SHOULD be.

Young Sam was said to have been recruited into SPD. Meaning that apparently, this police academy has a children's cadet program. If they wanted to keep it light-hearted but emotional, they could have focused on the same theme already established in Sam's introduction, the fact that the kid is very lonely.
Future Sam could have already known how Young Sam felt in the Academy, alone, othered, sad. He could have acted as his young self's imaginary friend. This ball of light that gives him advice and support. You can finish the episode with Future Sam telling his young self that everything is going to be fine, that he is going to meet some great friends and do great things. SPD & Lightspeed Rescue are government-run, I'd imagine they'd receive a stipend, especially since the latter team were pulled from their civilian jobs to be recruited.
Overdrive is easy since Dr. Hartford is rich and can buy an army.
While RJ probably wasn't loaded, it's a good bet that he let the Jungle Fury team work in his pizza shop at a decent rate to earn some spending money while providing free room & board to the essentially homeless Rangers.
If the Time Force team's future timeline didn't establish universal basic income, there's good odds that their paycheques are stacking up & waiting for them when they return to the year 3001.

Especially as he was an adult working at SPD in 2001. That’s how the team got civilian powers. Also it wouldn’t fit what we know about how the Chrono Morphers work. As neither a child or brother would have the exact matching DNA to Wes. I believe that Cat pulled a copy of the Chrono Morpher from the archives but was unable to fully recreate the powers. Which as the real Time Force Red Powers were still in use made her copy weaker allowing for the death of Sky’s dad.

I have a headcanon that I think explains the whole shadow ranger snout situation. The process of morphing seems to partially alter the biology of the person morphing. When Justin morphed, he suddenly grew two feet and gained a physique similar to the other rangers. When aliens morph, they become more human, such as zenowing shinking down and loosing his wings while morphed, Kruger's snout disappearing, or the Aquitar rangers' somewhat larger heads being able to fit into the helmets. This could either be from the people making the powers, ie zordon, time force, etc, have only figured out how to get the morphing process to work for an adult human, so other beings that try to morph get changed to fit those parameters while they are morphed. It could also be because the nature of the morphing grid is such that it changes your body into the form that is most suited for the power, and that form just so happens to be an adult human. If you want to really be meta and pedantic, this could also explain the minor differences in body types of the American actors and their sentai counterparts.

So I've seen others briefly mention it, but not go into detail. Dekaranger - SPD's Sentai - backporting the Battlizer. See, Sentai does the teamup a bit differently, using it in crossover movies with the previous season. So when Magiranger vs Dekaranger came around - going direct to DVD in 2006, after SPD had wrapped filming - Toei would have seen it, and clearly someone liked it, so they gave DekaRed the Battlizer - both modes of it. What's fascinating is that from Jungle Fury onwards, Power Rangers stopped doing Battlizers, but from Shinkenger (Samurai's Sentai), they started introducing the Red Ranger Exclusive Power Up, even if it could be passed around. In other words, the Battlizer mantle swapped hands.

Second, I love SPD. Truly I do and Brandon Jay McLaren is the GOAT. Hands down. If you saw his work after SPD, the guy has a lot of range. No joke.
And yes, the Kalish Era has had it's ups and downs. But as you progress through the History of Power Rangers, you're going to realize Disney made a big blunder investing in Power Rangers. Just wait till you reach Operation Overdrive. That's where things start to go downhill and not in a good way.

Sadly, that's real. My friends and fam who are teachers always say that kids nowadays don't know how to read traditional clocks

I always thought it was a nice concept of ranger progression. I like that Sky eventually became the red ranger, and then the green ranger eventually became the red ranger when he appeared again in once a ranger.

I really love that at the end of wormhole that Sam and Tommy both did not get there minds wiped so they would know about the team up it makes sense kind of since Sam is a time traveler and Tommy would be one of the Rangers that would team up with wes and others in other team ups

Kudos for leaving the explosion rant in lmao 🤣 😆
One of my favorite seasons, ngl 🎉 loved the team Jack, growing into a good leader and realizing that he can trust his decisions, Sky learning to accept his teammates and trust Jack in his role, Bridge proving that outside the box thinking is sometimes the way to go, Sydney proving she is not just a spoiled rich girl and a hardworker, Z actually getting to make the bigger difference she wanted, and Doggy being a stout mentor and leader eventually facing down his own demons. Grum was a huge presence and proven threat since beginnings. Well written and geat season 👏 👌 👍

Imagine watching Power Rangers SPD in Surround Sound, only to be
hit with the first three notes of the theme song while falling out of
    your chair.

I really did enjoy some of the comedy of this season. Bridge was always a treat and is still today one of my favorite Green/Black Rangers of the series. But man, that part where Piggy asks the Universe for a sign that he did the right thing, only for his Food Truck to be zapped and blown up had me rolling. Like God straight up went, "I want there to be NO misunderstanding here. You F'ed up."

I believe that in Power Rangers canon some Rangers wrote memoirs about their adventures and experiences. I believe Carter Grayson's became an elementary for every new Power Rangers.
    it goes like this:
"Carter Grayson's School of Ranger Tactics:
    1. Be a Badass
    2. Anyway start blasting everything
    End.
    Bestseller
On more serious note. Boom's speech in the SPD command center in the finale is one of the best motivational speeches ever made in entertainment history. The only speech that tops it is Mashall Pendlecost's speech from Pacific Rim "Today we cancel the APOCALYPSE".

As weird as this might sound, even though spd is up there as one of my favorite series, it was not exactly my first series- that would be exactly be the one that came right after this. And even though mystic force was MY childhood power rangers, I do think that spd is still better. But, can you really blame me for loving mystic force as a kid and even still enjoying it as an adult? I was only five years old back when mystic force aired in 2006, and I was diagnosed with autism just before I started kindergarten in the fall of that year.

I couldn't see anyone else bring this up, but the episode Reflections was actually based on episodes 28 and 29 of Dekaranger.
Instead of it being a blue ranger episode it was an episode for their 6th ranger Tetsu. They of course changed this for SPD since their 6th is a ball of light for the majority of the run.
The bad guy didn't kill Tetsu's dad but killed his girlfriend and like we see in reflections he had to cover everything including his eyes so that the bad guy couldn't get out but like in SPD he makes him cry and gets out that way.
Tetsu was a very serious character at this point in the series and these episodes help show why he became that way but it also starts his characters growth into a less stoic person.

The helmets look like japanese bullet trains because of that

54:38 Even if it's expensive to have JDF back in New Zealand, they could of at least have JDF to do some voice-over as Tommy for the crossover. I mean they literally have JDF voice-over as Tommy once before in Dino Thunder when Tommy got stuck in his Ranger Form for a few episodes.
