Revolutionary Girl Utena's opening is one of my favourites, so I've made a spoiler free AMV of it's opening theme!
It's a very symbolic and allegorical anime, which I like about it, but because of that it can be confusing to some people. You may need to even watch it a second time to fully understand the show. Even so, it's still a really interesting and thought-provoking anime. If you're interested in watching it, all episodes are available to watch on CZcams, both subbed and dubbed.
I struggled to get this video up due to it getting blocked worldwide, but it's finally here! You can turn on the closed captioning button for English subtitles.

Yeah this is basically patient zero of Tumblr culture
Though regrettably it also invented trauma and abuse.
This is one of the first animes (and also the first shoujo ai anime) I watched too
I remember googling shoujo ai animes at 13yo.
(like I newly learn what anime is, watched 3 animes at that time yet - steins gate, kyoukai no kanata, samurai champloo. doraemon and dragon ball on tv if it counts.)
Learned genre names, saw shoujo ai and I immediately went to search it. Lol.
I'd write down their titles but i used to think I was straight and that i was "just watching different genres"💀😭

@@maydayjanette226 I don't know. Disney might tackle some darker issues sometimes, but the Disney princess thing is the opposite of Utena.
The show takes the fairy tale archetypes, especially the prince/princess, and thoroughly dissects them. The show is quite openly critical of things you'd see in Disney princesses movies, and rejects them.

One of the best anime series I have seen, and I have seen many of them! And the voice of Masami Okui fits perfectly for it.

a really revolutionary anime for its time
it honestly is still absolutely revolutionary. there is no other anime quite like this. recent ones like the new gundam are clearly inspired by utena but utena just has this radical, explicitly feminist message and themes throughout all the work, and its so beautifully executed, that ive not seen anywhere else since. i think its the best anime of all time, certainly miles ahead of typical misogynist garbage like EVA (artistically impressive, but thematically predictable and it has some absolutely disgusting and unforgivable aspects)

@@philliplitost2053 no i did, utenas goal is to become a prince and in the show they deconstruct the the harmfulness of these fairytale roles such as prince, princess etc. the show in the end sets up the prince as someone who is selfless and naive and utena does reach that princehood through freeing anthy from ohtori.
@@kasuari Actually no, the prince in Utena is an illusion, a thing that doesn't exists, an archetypical creation of the human society. Utena can't become a prince, because she is not a prince, nor a princess, nor a witch. She is a human, a woman who wants to be feminine, but powerful. There's not an archetype like that in fairy tales (or at least there wasn't at that age). In Utena's world if you're a man that wants power and nobility you can only choose to be a prince. If you're a woman you can be a princess (kind and submissive), but in case you are a woman and also want power, you turn into a witch because... patriarchy. Utena's world is a misogynist one that can't conceive a woman being powerful or owner of her destiny. Utena's series ends when she realizes she CAN'T be a prince, because she's not an archetype, she's a person with nuances and complexities. She doesn't save Anthy, she can't do that either. She only helped her to see the light, but Anthy's the one who saves herself leaving Ohtori's Academy (the Patriarcal System, a mental one). Utena tried to save Anthy earlier in the series, but she couldn't, because Anthy had to change (revolutionize herself). In conclusion, Anthy saved herself (with Utena's help) and Utena's not a prince nor a princess, she is a human... and that's why she's wonderful

Absolute Classic
As a kid loving the Elizabeth Swann vibes when she was a pirate and emulating those types of female characters, had I grown up watching Utena as a kid, woah, I would have loved Utena as a character! I had the DIC dubbed reruns of Sailor moon (cringe). The representation I could have seen... #late bloomers #lgbtq so of course I'm binging this now.

this anime came out a year before i was born i watched it for the first time back in 2019 yeah little late but there´s a lot of anime of older character i recently just found never caught the pokemon reference in this one though although the little monkey kinda looks like a pokemon didn't really think about that til now
