- I'll show you a (in my opinion) better way of using your wooden or bamboo hoop, and explain why your plastic hoops didn't hold the fabric taut for $#!t.

Using a hoop was so annoying and led me to learn to stitch in my hand with a quicker method of only keeping the needle on the top of the fabric. Works like a charm and no more hoop. These are great tips, though!
I'm going to try in the well next time! I've come across the issues you mentioned when doing the 'drum' method. Thanks for also sharing the 'secret' to the plastic hoops!
Ive been loading the hoop with the well orientation ever since I saw this video two years ago and I'm never going back. Super useful tip!!

I was taught this way on a hoop so to keep the fabric clean; accidentally putting it down on a soiled surface. I also fold the back over the front on the edge, still keeping my body oils off the fabric.
I also place the outside hoop on the backside, to keep from threads getting caught on the hoop closure. So much easier!

As a beginner, this video is so helpful! I have been loading my fabric wrong.
So I watched this video and was like ok for most of it but I have the plastic hoops with the lips. I tried it today on one of my projects and am completely blown away by how much tighter my fabric is holding. So thanks for this video.

I've actually done the "well" stitching format in the past. Now that I'm older and have arthritis in my fingers I could see how that would be advantageous so I'm going to switch to that from now on. Thank you for the tip! Found your channel a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it.
Hi, I just found you today 11/17/20 while browsing cross stitch info. I'm working on my first piece (my first was in 1983 so I don't count that one!). I am making a Nintendo Animal Crossing Villager. I started with a hoop initially but then I decided to change from the stab method to the sewing method. I like it better because I never have to turn the aida over. I just wash my hands before stitching to keep the fabric cleaner because of all the handling. I never even considered the "in the well" method. I only knew "drum"! Maybe with a larger project I'll try your way. My lunch is over - now I have to get back to work. Will check out your other videos soon. Thank you!
I have tried to stitch off and on and the hoop would drive me nuts, this actually helps my problems I ran into and I'm looking forward to trying it and trying this craft again!

Get rid of hand fatigue- attach your hoop to a stand and learn to stitch with both hands. I’m going to try your hoop method though. I only work from the front with pin stitches etc but it’ll be a good frame to rest my scissors in 🙂 it’ll also be easier to roll and pin fabric.

Thank you so much for showing me the correct way to use my hoops? I do have the problem of trying to weave in the ends on the back and ended up removing an repositioning the fabric ( if I could..) I just bought some rectangular hoops on Amazon and they do not have the little lips on them. Yet to try them out. … will know tonight…🤔 greetings 🇨🇦
... or don't use a hoop at all. I tension the fabric with the fingers of the hand holding it. It's just a matter of experience and practice - better leave the thread too loose than pulling it too hard. Without a hoop stitching is much faster, as you can go in and out of the fabric in one go (it's easier on eavenweave than on Aida).
I've stitched in-hand before but it makes the muscles in my palm cramp up like a mofo. I also just don't like the way stitches lay with the sewing method, especially in packed areas with multiple colors in abutting stitches. It certanly seems faster but it really doesn't work for me.
My hand hurts that way ;-;

A lot of people have those hoopla hoops sitting in a drawer because they think they suck. Really it's mostly just their instructions that suck!

My partner is an engineer. I learned very quickly that most of the time, problems I’ve had with products are most likely because of user error. And I’m okay with that. If I learn how to use something the right way, it’s kind of an aha moment. And then I say (out loud): “See? This is why I married an engineer!” 😁😁
In fairness, if the user doesn't know how to use the product correctly, that's a design failure. Too often, the packaging is completely the domain of Marketing and they don't really give any thought to UX, and I think that really hurts whatever company makes these Hoop-La hoops. Sooo many stitchers think they suck, when in reality they're fantastic; they just don't know how to use them, and they don't even *know* that they don't know how to use them.
@@SonovaStitch You make an excellent point. Does the Hoop-La have an instruction manual, and does it indicate how to use the product correctly? Is it an overseas product where things can get lost in translation? Are there resources for retailers so they can properly instruct customers on how to use the product? All of these things could help address any breakdowns in communication between Hoop-La and the end user. Also, I found it funny that I always think of UX as a programming term, but I never really thought about it in terms of tangibles. Had to laugh at myself!

I can’t believe I’ve been doing it “wrong” all this time! I wonder if switching in then middle of a project creates a problem, like it would with knit or crochet? I think I’ll switch on my next new project instead of in the middle.

I just use a bigger hoop and center the area I am working on. Problem solved. I just can't get used to the fabric being In the well. But I'm old and don't like change 😅

You would actually use a larger hoop and a bigger piece of material to stich the design you are showing. You are actually making the stitching so much harder!!
Or to put it another way, stitching in the well allows me to use a smaller hoop and waste less fabric.

Yes, you could absolutely stitch in the well for embroidery! The benefits would be pretty much the same.

fun learning. My sweet sister in the Lord is teaching me. She gave me some beautiful patterns of flowers in cross stitch for my dressers. I am moving and this is my first time to do it.
The hoops still in the way even in the well when burying stitches, already tried it. Just take it off if needs be it’s not so difficult and you can get it underneath the hoop even when stitching on the drum. Stitching in the well is far too difficult and troublesome to not find a way around all issues
You should bind your hoop… just saying…
