@@deew_knird_reeb_ekomSdon't agree with the first guy but Yao Ming on MJ wasn't a goaltend, The Kobe one was borderline, the Giannis and Avery Bradley chase downs very obviously legit blocks.
I see a lot of people who don’t know anything about basketball saying that this is a stupid rule. Like, think for a sec, without the goaltending rule, the game if basketball would be destroyed, you would literally have every center camp the paint, and swat the ball before it rim, no three pointers would be made.
A lot of these shouldn’t be a goal tend. They should restructure it to if it’s in the cylinder or has hit off the back board then you can’t touch, but if the ball is on its way, even if it’s on the way down, if it’s not in the cylinder/hit the backboard, it should be clean.
@@Aextra101that rule in the way that you describe it would make three pointers impossible. a team could just put any clint capela out there near the basket and swat any shots on the way down
I don't have too good of an understanding of the rules, but I think this is really stupid. If a player is physically able to knock the ball away when its a millisecond away from going into the net, why shouldn't they, that's awesome. Poking your hand through the net to block the ball is obviously ridiculous but some of these I just don't get, like why can't you block a ball that's on its way to the basket, but you can wack it out of someone's hand?
Brother you’d get scores looking like they’re playing soccer. You’d never see a single shot. Basketball wouldn’t have any of the shot creation or passing that makes it interesting currently. There would be literally zero way to score other than run and dunk. The only reason there would be a single point is because of the three second violation.
I'm not a fan of basketball as in I don't know most of the rules. I looked up Goaltending Basketball read the rule watched a video on the rule. Then this video as the rule is written I say at least half of these are not Goaltending. The ball is not directly above the rim in a few, the ball is not on the downward arch yet. Did the rule change in the past? Is it simply mistakes by the refs?
This is probably why i dont care for basketball. In nfl you're not going to penalise the safety for stopping a touchdown. In footy you're not going to penalise the goalkeeper for saving a shot.
being able to just stop a shot while it’s about to hit the rim is unbalanced af, imagine this, your a top 3 shooter and ur wife open but the guy whos standing in the paint with an insane jumping distance jumps up and blocks it on it’s way down to score
@@darthhorror0HD if you think about the counterplay would be even worse, people would physically protect the rim pushing and jamming everybody. We would have bodybuilders or sumo fighters playing in the NBA.
@jayparmo2284 Dumbest take I’ve seen in a long time. Blocking and defending isn’t illegal but stopping a shot as the ball is coming down isn’t allowed. Just imagine for a second, with all the 7 footers and niggas with 40+ inch vertical leaping ability in the NBA, if they were able to block a shot at any point in its flight. Games wouldn’t see ANY points whatsoever, you’d just leave your center parked under the basket and have him put his hand through the hoop whenever a shot is taken. It’s not even like this is an insane feat of athleticism, near anyone who is capable of touching the rim can goaltend a shot with the right timing, imagine elite athletes doing this for millions of dollars.
no, this rule is very much needed. every time can just assign a seven footer to stick their hand through the rim, and bam. nearly impossible to score by shooting
To me this is the dumbest rule in basketball. Why can you not defend your own basket? Not everybody can jump and reach to the ball if its close to the rim. In all other sports soccer, football, handball, hockey etc you can defend your goal/basket/net.....
because if the ball is about to go in and you stop the points from being scored, it becomes unfair on shorter players because they cant do the same thing. if it was a goal like in handball then sure this rule would be removed because everyone can do it
the difference is that in the goals in soccer are small af compared to basketball ones and everyone can guard them in some way,In basketball it becomes unfair because then it just makes the whole “ the tall sport” stereotype that basketball has, even more true
@@deew_knird_reeb_ekomS meant to say big af but yea blocking a shot that’s already at its peak is just completely unfair you could do that every possession and the whole game becomes boring
You’d hate it even more if it didn’t, imagine any player above 7ft (or even just average NBA height with a good vertical) just camped under the hoop stopping literally every shot by covering the hoop from the bottom. No points ever scored or at best single digit games.
This rule is not in any way stupid, it can just be badly enforced due to the inconsistency in refereeing and human error. There are goaltends that aren’t called and there are clean blocks that are called goaltending. If the goaltending rule didn’t exist however, any shot could be blocked at any point in its flight. If we are talking about average height and athleticism people who realistically don’t have a shot of consistently jumping above 10ft to block shots, fair enough, it probably wouldn’t matter. But we are talking about elite basketball athletes in the NBA (where the average height is 6”7). Anyone who can touch the rim, let alone dunk, can goaltend a shot with good timing, now imagine tall freak athletes who can play above the rim with ease. Each team would just have their centre block every shot under by jumping from under the basket if the goaltending rule was removed. Imagine 7”4, 8 foot wingspan Wemby now, who doesn’t even have to jump to touch the rim. Who is scoring a shot over him? He could literally hop and block every one of the opposing teams shots.
