- In this video, I show the waterfall display options I use on the Icom IC-705 to find weak signal stations. This not only works for the IC-705 but also the IC-7300 and IC-9700.
What settings do you use? Please let me know in the comments below.

Thanks for posting this ... I have had my IC 705 for a couple of years and never set the waterfall to look this great. Great help!
Glad it helped!
Oh thank goodness for this. I have a ic-705 , a ic-9700 and an ic-7300 and have been struggling to get good settings on my waterfalls. The manuals are rubbish for noobs like myself so this is a game changer for me thank you again
I use the settings you prescribe. Thanks for taking the time to post!
Glad it was helpful!
Probably the Best Waterfall Set Up explanation :)
Glad it was helpful!
Nice video on how to change the spectrum scope on the IC-7300. I really like it. I changed mine to match your settings and it really helps find those weak signals!!!
Some helpful tips and clearly explained Hayden, thanks.
I have run mine with the out of the box setup until now. This is one useful video. Thanks so much Hayden.
Thanks Aldi, it makes the screen pop that little bit more too :)
That's awesome..mine now looks a lot better on my ic 7300 after watching this.
Great video..top job 👍
Awesome tips Hayden!. Keep up the excellent work
Appreciate it John. Thank you for the comment!
Set mine up as per your settings last night. Wow its a great improvement I love it 👍👍
Great to hear!
Wow you made this so simple to understand!
Thanks Ben 👍
That was very helpful. Thank you!
Brilliant. Thanks Hayden that was extremely helpful.
Thanks Joe, glad it helped.
Yep, I found your video very useful and adjusted my radio similarly.
Great! It makes it much easier to see signals. I was playing on 40m last night and could see lots of US stations easily whereas before I couldn't.
Superb video, I set my icom 7300 scope to your settings, It is much better now, Thank you
Awesome! Good luck working those weak signal DX stations, now you can see them :)
Very informative, great video. Thanks Hayden.
Thanks Mark!
I prefer the default view but I liked your explanation on how to change it.
Just set my IC 7300 to these settings. Awesome thanks
Thank you for the comment! Please share around
Thanks….that was super helpful
I know this is old news, but thanks a bunch, really helpful.
Very helpful thanks. I think "EDGE" is now "SPAN" on the menu
The BIG problem is that Ref setting depends on a hudge amount on bandwith setting if we want the same background appearance. Would be wise ICOM relates both so that display is consistent.
Huge Help! Nice job thank you!
Glad it helped!
Just godt my ic-9700 and I have set it up like yours and it works better, Thanks
;)
Awesome stuff glad I could help
Hey, great video, Hayden! I had my 705 set up already almost exactly the way that you've got, with a couple of the numbers being off by one - I had even set up the exact same band edges. One main difference is that enable the 10sec max hold time. Having that signal peak ghost left there after someone stops transmitting somewhere else on the band helps me get right on frequency and ready for when they call again.
That's a good tip Max. I think I might reestablish the max hold too as I did find it handy. Thanks for the comment glad to hear you're enjoying your radio too.
The same here, I have started to use max hold...It stays there even when the waterfall rolls out. Fixed edges, or even better with scroll mode, it's actually an usable waterfall. Mamy stations need to learn here.
Thanks so much for the most helpful video on setting the waterfall
You’re welcome
Great video! So many ham CZcams videos are bloated. This is to the point and provides useful information. Thanks and 73 de W3YJ.
Thanks Harry 👍
Very good thanks
Good to know

How did you stop the RF gain control from effecting the waterfall? KI5MEF
Great video. Just got an email that mine is "close" to shipping. Look forward to using your videos to get going. I may have missed it, but what type of antenna(s) are you using?
Thanks Kevin. I'm using a End Fed Half Wave antenna for 80-10m (it tunes without a tuner on 80/40). I need to do a video on it as I need to tweak 20m a little better. On 6m/2m/70cm I'm using a Diamond V2000 vertical.
tnx
Thank you. I really would like the bandwidth of the filter on the waterfall. Linke on the web-sdr. Is this somehow possible?
I prefer the blue background (not the black), removed the delay hold, and I like a nice light magenta color for the waveform line. Don't like the green.
Hmmmm…..all my settings are the same. But spectrum scope still not working. In fact, my n1mm stopped talking with the 7300 with those setting. I put everything back to the original settings and the radio and n1mm started talking again. But still no spectrum scope. Puzzled….
I've both 7300, 9700, mine are both CURRENT & LINE R-255, G-255, 0 and WATERFALL 255, 78, 12.
I'll give that a try Robbie thanks!
I am a new 705 owner. How can the rig be useful in seeing weak signals (right near the noise floor as in vhf weak signal work) when the vertical range is 80 db? The display needs to be able to expand the range, to cover only 10-20 db vertically. I had hoped to see vhf tropo openings, or search for power line noise using the noise floor as an indication. Vy disappointed. Will probably sell.
Use a software DSP waterfall instead
The very useful video
Thanks!
I’ve not committed yet as still have concerns about stability on vhf using digital modes, have you tried it on ft8 vhf and if so is it stable?
I plan on doing a stability video over the next few weeks
Ham Radio DX great looking forward to it thanks for all your content 👍
👍👍
What is the satellite icon on your screen?
On the IC-705 it has a built in GPS receiver... the little satellite icon stops blinking once it acquires a lock and you can view your location, height, grid square from the radio screen plus output GPS timing from the USB if you need.
@@HamRadioDX Gotcha, thx.
The reference setting is the same for all spans. Gives different display results. This is just stupid! Should allow one REF per SPAN. Or a setting automatically changing with span.
The other issue is it is very quick better very slow
For crisssaked stop with the ridiculous clickbait titles.
How is this clickbait? It literally improves your waterfall from what you get out of the box.
Maybe if you stop with the ridiculous criticism. You may want to make your own videos. 😂
