Sandro Tonali will be banned from football for 10 months over breaches of rules on betting on matches in Italy, the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Thursday.
Tonali, who joined Newcastle United from AC Milan this year, must also attend treatment sessions for problem gamblers and give a series of talks about his experience over a further eight-month period as part of an agreement with the FIGC.
That would rule the 23-year-old, a £55million summer signing from AC Milan, out of the remainder of the Magpies' season and Italy's Euro 2024 finals campaign, should they qualify.
Tonali had been assisting the investigation and his legal team have been working on a plea bargain after he admitted to making bets on AC Milan to win games in a hearing at the Italian Federation in Turin.

This kind of punsihment is crazy! The only people being punished here are Newcastle. Tonali gets to play golf for a year on £200,000 a week. Surely the only fitting punishment would be a fine of 90% of his wages for a year while he keeps playing.

We don't really know whether Tonali or Toney have a gambling problem. Football's rules mean those with an addiction get shorter bans. Players want to get back playing football as soon as possible. Being addicted is rightly seen as (at least partly) an excuse for going against the rules and rightly gets sympathy from fans too. Whereas someone caught who is not addicted has no excuses and is more likely to get abuse. Therefore only natural for every player caught gambling to say they're addicted whether they are or not

This does not offer any player with a gambling addiction who wants to try and get help for a route out. There needs to be a process that allows this without potentially ruining a career. For high profile players in big teams the ban is not as much of a problem as it would be for less high profile players in smaller teams in lower leagues. It just means that players are going to continue to hide their addictions and get themselves into further mental health problems.

"Newcastle are exploring the possibility of reducing Tonali's wages".
They shouldn't have to be exploring the possibility, Tonali should volunteer to have his wages stopped all together, while he is not earning them.
Ibrahimovic, when he got injured for that long spell, while at Man Utd, he had the decency and the honour of fair play and asked Man Utd to stop paying him, because he felt he did not deserve to be paid.
Man Utd had the decency and honour of fair play to say: "Ok, but we are going to give your wages to a charity of your choice".
So tell us Mr Sandro "Mercenary Footballer" Tonali, where is your decency and honour for fair play.
I can see now why Milan sold him, more fool Newcastle for buying him.
Newcastle Utd, becoming yet another Club with more money than sense.
Newcastle Utd, becoming yet another mega rich Club, filling its boots with Mercenary Footballers.
What Newcastle should do is sack him and seek compensation from him, for that £64m they have wasted on him.
