- It's been two weeks since we shared with you our desire to establish more effective routines in our early retirement now that our cottage renovation project is finally finished. We look back on our first couple of weeks living by our new routines. The weather has improved, we are out and about in our campervan and we are starting to get a true taste of what our early retirement will really be like. It's fair to say, we are absolutely loving life!

Well done. I also retired early at 54 and I’m now 60, I honestly don’t know where those years have gone! With so much spare time to fill I found it really hard to economise so I think your commitment to stick to a budget is the right way to go. I’m enjoying following your early retirement adventure. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thankyou. We can’t believe we have been retired for 10 months already!
Having 'retired' at 56 we had ten years to wait for our state pensions to kick in - we fould having a holiday account worked for us just to cover campsites, extra fuel etc as food is eaten where ever we are. We only have a 'sort of' routine - regular activities etc but routines are made to be changed!! Keeps us sane any way.
We are finding that as we go along but if we can stick with eating well, spending less and being physically active I’ll be happy 😊
@@earlyretirementwanderlust Great aims - I'm sure you'll succeed :-)
Our spending has changed since downsizing and shaming ourselves with all the stuff we got rid of- we now have a one in one out rule based on volume! Anything that arrives in a bag/box that container must be filled with something that can be let go of….
It's quite a refreshing process isn't it? When we think back to the amount of stuff we had accumulated over the years compared to what we have now...it is quite shocking. We are still not quite there in terms of full on minimalism, but we are quite happy with our own version of it. It has allowed us to have much more space in our lives, the one in-one out concept is so simple and yet so effective.
Thanks for the comment. R&J
That is amazing if you can regularly stick to your budget. Campsite fees will take it over the budget.
You must be really pleased when you manage to stick to your budget. amount.
Thanks for this Catherine- yep campsite costs are a challenge and we have to constantly wrangle with that. Our cash is king system tends to focus the mind! We are a bit apprehensive about a coming trip to the SW where park-ups are rather limited and campsite seem to be quite expensive. We will see how it goes.
I love a meal plan! I have a chalkboard in my kitchen and I plan all my meals for the week to make sure that I have no food waste
Morning from sunny Lincolnshire.
I am enjoying this series on your routines and learning lots from you both. We are about six years away (hopefully) from early retirement- lots to learn and think about!
Thankyou, you’ll probably learn some of the things not to do on the way too 🤣 but we are enjoying finding our way as we go along
I think you both are doing amazing embracing retirement , I wonder at times how I found the time to work my days are so busy lol... Love a meal plan nothing boring about that at all, glad you both got to visit your mum's last week, make the most of your van life also , it was so hot today here in the South we spent the day out and about x x x keep safe x x
It has been glorious hasn’t it! It is so nice having time to stay at my mums now so we can see more of her and visiting Richards mum in the nursing home is always a fun experience the residents now think we are visiting them all!
Looks like a great start to your retirement.
Interesting watching.
Thanks. It has been a hectic but amazing 10 months!
Why not set a weekly budget of £120 a week and a £30 a week travel budget that you can save up when not doing any travelling. That way, your finances become more realistic and you know were you stand financially?
That makes much more sense to look at it that way!
Could you keep your weekly budget and have a flexible vacation fund that you use for all your travel goals? I find some budget items just don't work on a weekly/monthly format. The sinking fund concept seems to work better for those items.
Yes that sounds a good way to look at it. We do have a pot of money saved for ferries and flights we could add to 😊🚐
What is the fitness watch you wear?
Hi we both wear the basic Garmin instinct watch
I’m 34 and I can retire right now, that is early retirement. But I still work
Retirement from a career is a Mindset not only about money to retire- it’s about playing with your life and directing your own time to suit your own interests. Retiring early is different to simply giving up work…. it’s a turning away from the demands of work life values ….
And what about the French on Duolingo?
Richard managed to keep his 100+ day streak as we had a glimmer of reception at the top of grey knott 🤣
Well done! 👏🏻
