  • As you get older, most people know your upper hearing frquency limit lowers - I can hear 14Khz, but it falls away pretty sharply above this. Some people exposed to loud noises - music or work type noise have hearing loss too, so when you mix, do you accidentally add too much HF for other people?
This video includes test tones so you can assess if your hearing is compromised, plus some music tracks with HF content with an absolute top limit cutoff starting at a low 4KHz and going up in 2K steps to 20K, so you can hear and see what is going on and assess your own hearing.
In my case, using an app on my phone, I see that 10KHz is visible on the phone, but not at all loud in my ears, then it's back at 12 and 14, before going again. Even if your hearing is good, it shows how we are used to gentle roll offs of frequency, rather than an abrupt cut-off. Try it out and see how you respond to what you are seeing AND hearing. I suggest decent speakers of headphones. I blamed my speakers for the dip at 10K, until my phone app revealed it was present, but I was struggling. Makes all the shouting about hearing protection suddenly important.
Ironically - the audio has a hum, it's not there on the test material, but the studio small speakers didn't reveal it!! SM7B pre-amp had fallen onto the 13A 4 way - a very easy fix! Sorry.

Good work! I'm knocking on 70 and on doing this test, initially I thought my hearing was only good up to 6k. Then I discovered I could hear up to 12k if I incresed the volume considerably. It should probably be pointed out that decent listening equipment should be used for this test. Some listening devices may be unable to reproduce high frequencies effectively, leaving one with misleading results.

Great idea and thanks - er, I think. I've now discovered the upper limit of my hearing range and oh dear! My hearing test with an audiologist on Friday will be less of an ear opener now!

I discovered that the standard test at most health audiologists only covers frequencies in the speech band - they stop at about 8K I think, good luck,

@@pauljohnson4590I had the standard audiology test, which does only go to 8k. This week I'm having the 75 minute full test to see I can actually hear above 8k.

I think it would be useful to show "Fletcher-Munson Curves" of equal loudness. Until I saw them, I was under the false assumption that our hearing was equally sensitive to all frequencies.

That's something I'll need to do a bit of research on! cheers

I already knew i had bad high range hearing but the tone test was a little strange to me. I faintly heard 4k but 6k was super loud, and then heard nothing from 8k-20k. At least i have an enhanced low range to make up for it. It's kind of a feel thing,🙉

My 10k loss was a surprise then up again at 12k makes you realise how your brain hide things

If one's hearing loss is significant, would it be an option to rely on a spectrum analyser (like the one you've running in the background) to prevent cranking the high end up too much?

Tried it with my Samsung phone speaker - coudn't hear 10K. Tried again on my laptop, with Sennheiser HD205 headphones - I coud hear up to 12K.

We sort of assume our gadgets are better than they are don't we?
