  • @hanskover

    Short correctin: A biased AI doesn't reveal the programmers bias, but the bias of the people who's data the AI learned from.

    • @dontaylor7315
      @dontaylor7315 Před 5 lety +3

      How is the programmer prevented from biasing how the program analyses the data?

    • @hanskover
      @hanskover Před 5 lety +4

      @@dontaylor7315 I dont know any programmer who´d intentionally make his AI biased. Its an algorythm that learns from humainly solved problems. So for example police officers are shown pictures of subjects and they have to decide wether or not they are guilty. These photos are processed by the algorithm and then the algorithms procession is evaluated from the police officers answers.
      So the more pictures with solutions the algorithm "sees" the better it gets in self evaluating. But if those humain made evaluations were wrong the algorithm will be wrong too.
      For example the police officers were biased against people of colour. The effect is an AI biased against people of colour.
      As those data samples are often collected from people all over the internet (f.e. Googles racist bot.) those AIs dont represent the programmers.
      Fun fact: You know recaptchas? Those also feed some google algorithms with data.

    • @JC_923
      @JC_923 Před 5 lety +5

      @Tim Tom I don't think you understand the idea of bias. It DOESN'T have to be intentional. Yes, the data is a source of bias but you can't completely rule out the programmer either. Someone without that bias or is at least aware of that bias would recognise the problem in the data. A person with the bias would see nothing wrong with the data.

    • @dontaylor7315
      @dontaylor7315 Před 5 lety +3

      @@hanskover I know next to nothing about recaptchas and it sounds like something I should look up, so thanks. I do know about the profiling research you describe.
      My question didn't presuppose a scenario so unsubtle as a "programmer who'd intentionally make his AI biased." However I did presuppose that programmers are much like the rest of us in that they don't universally possess such deep self-knowledge that they'd always know whether they're biasing a program or not. Most of us aren't aware of what all our biases are - nor are we aware in every instance whether we're judging or acting, in part, on a bias. I don't know if there are safeguards within the nature of programs themselves that make them less susceptible to being inadvertently skewed by the programmer. That's what my question was aimed at.

    When it comes to AI it's the data which is biased and not the people who program the computers. Programmers just use the data available in the world to train these Artificial Intelligence systems.

    This conversation is so tricky. When reading Malcolm Gladwell's Blink, he mentioned a study about people being asked how they would react if they were in a dark alley and 2 white males or 2 black males appeared on the other end. I cannot remember exactly how it was administered. Even the blacks were astonished to find out they too would most likely turn back if they came across the blacks. Sadly I discovered that I would too. Question is, is there a legit basis? Could it be true that a select few have spoilt for the rest? I feel it is possible. Granted I live in Kenya and we are mostly black so race is not a huge deal but I have seen this in other ways.e.g there are places I would not stop to help someone with directions or dare pick my phone or show valuables and there some people who make me turn back or feel unsafe when I see them 😬
