- To truly accept the future, you have to understand the past. That's what helped Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley create the absolute masterpiece that is Sonic Mania, but how did they start out as just a pair of Sonic fans and end up here?

Sonic Mania is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games and published by Sega for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows in August 2017. It was announced in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The game is inspired by the original Sonic the Hedgehog games released for the Sega Genesis, and features 2D graphics and remastered versions of stages from previous games alongside new stages. The player controls Sonic the Hedgehog and his companions Tails and Knuckles as they venture to defeat their nemesis Doctor Eggman and his henchmen, the Hard-Boiled Heavies.
Development was led by programmer Christian "Taxman" Whitehead, who had previously worked on enhanced ports of early Sonic games. Art, level design, audio, and additional programming were provided by the independent studios Headcannon and PagodaWest Games, chosen for their work in the Sonic fangame community. Sonic Mania received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its faithfulness to the early Sonic games. Many viewed it as a return to form for the series following a number of poorly-received Sonic games released after the 1990s.
Following the events of Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic and Tails receive a powerful energy reading from Angel Island and board Tails's plane, the Tornado, to investigate. However, Doctor Eggman has sent a group of robots to reach the signal first. Sonic and Tails arrive just as the robots excavate the source of the signal, a mysterious gemstone, and use its powers to become the Hard-Boiled Heavies. The robots send Sonic and Tails back in time, along with Knuckles, who was relaxing nearby. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles travel through places from their past to prevent Eggman from using the gemstone's power for evil, clashing with him and the Heavies along the way.

It's just crazy to me that if the sonic hacking scene didn't exist, Sonic Mania wouldn't exist.
This is pretty much the big hail every one of us in the scene deserved, I feel.
+ATimofyToThePast And it couldn't have been entrusted to more capable people, these guys are the granddaddies of Sonic hacking, and they knocked it out of the park.
Not only is this game excellent, they've put a ton of thought into replayability that you don't see on games anymore. These guys put a lot of thought and effort into this game, and it shows.
I would really love to work for sega one day
Even crazier is just at a certain point actually being on speaking terms with the people that made it! Now they have to limit their involvement with all their old friends because they just can't say too much without losing their jobs.
Dunno if anyone gives a shit but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all the latest series on instaflixxer. Been watching with my brother for the last couple of months =)
Tee Lopes was also a fan posting his remixes on the sonic forum. Tyson Hesse who did the animation intro was also a fan doing sonic comics fanmade. Hyper Potion also participated for making songs to the trailers. SEGA tryuely did something magnificent in making this project be a reality.
You guys do realize you used a SiIvaGunner rip for the music at the end of the video right?
*gamexplain flashbacks*
Mur *
You mean the Platformania trailer?
*HIGH QUALITY*
Dude they would literally have to search it up and edit it into the video themselves, I'm pretty sure they were well aware.
Where might one find that track?
That's a real bummer about Sonic 3 and Knuckles, it definitely deserves a re release. Still Mania is amazing
Fortunately though, there are alternatives. Namely, Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic 3 Angel Island Revisited (or Sonic 3 A.I.R. for short). These are fan-made remakes of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and each of them have their own benefits. For example, Sonic 3 Complete is a rom-hack that can be played on the original hardware if you care about authenticity, while Sonic 3 A.I.R. is pretty much the mobile remake we never got, except it's on PC.
Classic Eggman:(Scraching his head)Did the the Sonic fan base really go that crazy?
It's gotta feel great to finally have this video done, congrats on almost 5.5k subs BTW!
I wouldn't mind a Xbox or PS port of the remastered Sonic 1 & 2. Make it happen Sega..
demogorgon music ltd lol
I wouldnt mind a mobile version of Mania, the full game's size was somewhere near 250 ish mb, so they have no excuse. THAT, or i got the info wrong and they cant due to technical limitations
They do have an excuse and that's determined by the companies handling the phones and whether or not the game can run smoothly in mobile platforms. Sonic CD for mobile an entirely different engine and Christian Whitehead had to create it himself for it to work on mobile, if Sonic Mania wasn't made in the Retro Engine, then they'd have to translate it over somehow.
+Mugen Sonic Mania runs on an updated version of the retro engine which both the sonic 1 and 2 ports run on already, considering the game is not even close to being massively demanding I really don't see any major technical difficulties getting in the way when most phones should run it just fine.
demogorgon music ltd Yes. Those games need to be on widescreen on the big screen.
Just recently stumbled upon you guys' channel about a week ago, and honestly you guys are pretty entertaining to watch and listen to! Keep up the good work!!!
Excellent as always, I can't wait for part one of the playthrough to be uploaded!!!
Oh Sonic Mania?
I think you mean the first good game from SEGA in years.
It's gonna be a really brief history too since the game just came out about 2 days ago.
super goron untrue
man this is a prime case of living the dream - from fan games to official games.
i cannot be more happy for developers behind mania
Great video. It gave me a lot more info on Taxman and Stealth that I didn't know (also great job on 5.5k subs you guys deserve it!)
I’d love to see where Sonic the Hedgehog: Project Metrix is now.
Yo, thanks for giving so many people in the community proper shout outs! Hah, I remember when Brad was first making Nexus on the SFGHQ forums. The good ol days. lol
I come back to this video every so often just for dat beautiful outro.
It did NOT go well
SEGA sent a cease and desist order at Taxman for the CD port but strangely changed their mind later inexplicably
Thank you so much! I was looking everywhere for more on this game's back story.
The story of Taxman and Stealth is certainly a remarkable one!
ft. The Gaming Historian
thanks 4 the likes
^3^,
i formerly do Scratch 1.4 or Scratch 2.0 games,
plus i can fix Sonic and the Seven Rings with my 1.4 or 2.0 engines.
and a BIG THANKS For The Gaming Historian for voicing this video history
Thanks for going into the stuff about sonic 3 and the music stuff.
I just subbed to you guys. Love the Sonic videos. Keep up the great vids!
The brief history videos are great! Keep up the hard work.
Great! Can't wait to see you guys playing it
We need the lets play haha awesome stuff guys
Fun fact, I helped on XG, just I shortly had to leave the project due to focusing on life, and Joe had to continue without me and Christian had to abandon the project when the opportunity for working with Mania came up, and I don't know what happened to the project, guess Joe abandoned it.
Toasty maybe you can contact Joe about it
erm...proof? when whitehead left the project it wasn't called sonic xg anymore, and that was 6 YEARS AGO. He didn't go to work on Mania, he went to work on the Sonic CD port - he was hired by sega. I looked on your channel for proof and all I'm seeing...are minecraft videos. 10/10
+Jutseph, actually... the first thing you see are Sonic Generations vids.
Sonic Megamix was architected by Tweaker, not stealth. The project was handed over years later. I learned 68k assembly secondhand from the folks that did much of the trickery in Megaxmix, and while stealth was always involved (as he was in countless projects), it was Tweaker's hack from day 1.
Awesome as always
Siivagunner provided that music you used at the end
What was the remix at the end?
sonic mashup mania
its a beautiful mashup ^^
So so nice
Am i the only one who reconizes the squid sisters' voices in the outro?
It's from Siivagunner
The trailer at the end was dope as all hell
Hey, thanks! :) Thought hyping up the game would be a good way to close out the video, glad you liked it!
It’s amazing that just a group of fans get hired by sega to create a game. And man did they succeed.
I always get the chills when I see this video
Awesome video, I'd like to see more fan games released from Sega, I've played a couple years ago and some of them are pretty unique.
The D-Pad watches SiIvagunner
Are you gonna do a brief history of Sonic Amateur Games Expo before the upcoming SAGE 2017?
I wasn't planning on it, but given how well these have been doing (and there's ANOTHER Sonic one I'm already working on), I don't see why I can't at least make an attempt at it!
tfw you're trying to pay attention to the vid but you can't help jamming to the music
Your Sonic vids are the best!!!
Hopefully with the success of Mania these fans can create a original and new Classic Sonic 2D title :o
man, that ending is fucking amazing!!!
I love this video! Keep up the good work guys!
Love those old retro games like sonic mania
I always have said just change the music to Sonic 3 and people will mod the original music back into the game. Like people did with thw Sonic and Knuckles collection on PC
So... legal issues is why we won't see a Sonic 3 and Knuckles iOS port. Disappointing. :/
9:03 *_Many blessings to SilvaGunner, bringer of high quality rips._*
Wait was the siiva rip intentional lmao
Thanks so much for this video! The Sonic community has such a bad rep that even it's talented side doesn't get the attention it deserves.
sound like sega kept gettin caught up in lies
That outro
You guys are awesome!
Why dont they use the sonic 3 and knuckles PC version music? That one has different music for all the stages that Michael Jackson was apart of.
Taaaxing
so weird question, you know alot about Sonic and Zelda and Megaman, im guessing because of years of playing and probably tons of research, in any of the sonic research, have you guys ever stumbled on or know anything about Sonichu? also not gonna lie these are always interesting, if you guys ever go back to the old Zelda games, like you mentioned in BOTW, you should do things like this for it, ive always been so curious about all that stuffs
+Kaida Masato I do know about Sonichu, yeah. I've stayed away from the subject mostly because it seems like it's a situation that started not so great and spiraled wildly out of control, and I'm still not super sure how I feel about the whole thing personally. Who knows though, never say never.
This cleared up a lot!
Dat remix at the end doe
They should just release Sonic 3 & Knuckles with the lawsuit music taken out and replaced with Smash Mouth.
Sonic Mania merely proves that Nintendo is in the right for rejecting fan creations considering that the game is merely a prequel to forces. Also, Sega treated the developers like trash afterwards.
You forgot to mention Pagoda West and their Sonic 2 remaster.
How and where can we play all of those sonic games versions.?
IS THAT ALL STAR IN THE BACKGROUND IN THE END
I’m pretty sure that sonic and the seven rings’ name is based off Mario and the seven stars
Today they release these blank in Sonic the Hedgehog Blank games in offical games.. So does that mean there canon? Better write a timeline for fun!
I kmniw this may sound unbelieveble but i actually dont care what game i play ,sonic 06/sonic666, sonic boom, sonic boom fire and ice, sonic lost world and etc.If i can play than yh i wouldnt care as long as i can play, its alright.
Is there the song at the end without the terrible vocal samples
SOMEONE TELL SEGA ABOUT SONIC AFTER THE SEQUAL AND SONIC BEFORE THE SEQUAL MADE BY LAKEFEPERD
Hey doodz
I wonder if these guys have heard of srb2k
So....what about Pagodawestgames?
Superkirby982 They're the folks behind the unfinished sonic 2 hd fangame, I believe.
Dusk209 yeah I know. Some of the members left to form Pagodawestgames, some stayed though
What's the name of the remix. It sounds awesome

I got Sonic Cd on my phone. Mistakes were made...
These are the most generic game journalists voices ive heard. You some how sound like every ign review
Disliked for the horrible I DONT FUCK WIT YOU song
Could've done without the stupid remix at the end but good content otherwise.
>Silvagunner
>Stupid
You've got a lot to learn
Hey, be a doll and don't rip off the name of FootOfAFerret's series.
The title of our "Brief History" series is a sendup to Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time". This is the first I've ever heard of FootOfAFerret.
