😑There was no tears on any of them dude - look closer!
There was a LOT of emotion and that is one of their greatest qualities is emoting when they sing!! AND YES SCOTT CRIES!!!😌👉👉 YES! PENTATONIX IS THE GREATEST ACAPELLA GROUP! REMEMBER! Aside from arranging AMAZING covers they have an AMAZING catalog of ORIGINAL songs!! So cleverly written YOU WILL LOVE PTX EVEN MORE!!!💖

😀👉Scott (blonde guy) is the unofficial leader of the group. Scott Kirstie and mitch are childhood friends from TX. Scott was approached while in CA attending USC to audition for the TV Acapella singing competition The Sing Off along with his childhood friends. Scott was introduced to Avi and shown a YT video of Kevin. Scott came up with name PENTATONIX and is usually the spokesman of the group (maybe because he showed the most confidence especially in the beginning) Scott has always had leader qualities but the greatest thing about PTX is how they ALL have a say and they REALLY LIKE AND RESPECT each other! They are ALL so down to earth and extremely likeable.
Scott leads a lot because he is basically a vocal chameleon!! His vocal range is AMAZING!!!

No lead singer, no egos. They arrange their music to best serve the music. They’re all passionate about their music and that’s what gives us all goosebumps when we listen to their music. When they cover a song they always make it their own and better than the original.

For me the best Mitch is in Gold. It is absolutely unreal what he can do with his voice. Many people are recommending the "big ones" when it comes to PTX, but there are tones of masterpieces...like Come along, Cheerleader, Havana, Run to you, New rulesxAre you that somebody etc

Kirstie has Broadway experience and is well-known for singing with passion and emotion. She is just barely over 5 feet tall, yet she packs a LOT of power in that petite body and angelic voice! Pentatonix does not have a lead singer. They have no ego when it comes to their songs, they choose who takes the lead dependent on who's voice the song best suits. Often that means they each take a lead, or sometimes just one leads throughout. They consider themselves a five-part equal partnership.

I dig how much you’re digesting these.
There isn’t truly a lead singer; they give the spotlight to whomever can best fill the need of any song or moment, and everyone else supports without pulling focus. It’s one of my favorite things about them.

The ONLY member who gets below par lead time is Kevin - but he is (so far) the only member who can carry the percussion so well. He still gets some lead time, but it is definitely less than the rest of the group. It is a simple question of "Who can go the section best"

These guys all have solo projects, too. I think the reason they've been able to stick together for so long is that they allow each other to follow their creative desires as long as PTX comes 1st - PTX is their bread & butter - and their actual love for each other. Individually they're all awesome. Together, they raise your soul to the heavens! 💖

More background: The Tears for Fears original came out in 1982. It didn't sound like what we know today; it was fast and poppy with a Caribbean flair. It's well worth listening to. (With Trivex' connection to the song, even reacting to.) For the movie _Donnie Darko,_ Gary Jules and Michael Andrews left the brilliant lyrics alone but completely changed the melody to the slow and haunting one most people are familiar with today. So this Pentatonix song is sort of a cover of a cover.
I believe the shadowy-ghostly imagery in the background of this video is a callback to the movie, with its off-center view of realities. What is real?

That's how they grab your soul, the emotion that they sing with. A lot of people say Scott is the lead singer, but they really don't have a lead. Scott is a great arranger.. genius in act but so are the rest. Kevin can start with a beat and everyone falls in. They all studied music so they all have much to give. Scott is the riff and run vocalist, excellent at it. Have you reacted to Amazing Grace by them yet? Mitch and Kirstie do an excellent job in the emotion dept. Lots to look for in that one, Mitch has a coat on with 'wings', Kirstin and Matt has undertones in the intro that is phenomenal; representing the bagpipes, tribute to the hymn in early history. Location, aesthetics, spirituality, all play a part. Amazing, pun intended! Thanks for the reaction!

      @@wewerebornsick8590I do not know much about Pentatonix except what I have read or watched in interviews so I may not be a lot of help but what I think I know is that the three (Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch) were friends from high school and sang together in choirs and such. Avi and Kevin were added just before the SingOff on NBC back in I think 2011. Scott was probably the spokes person because he was the most vocal of the three (then four and five) members of the group. I am guessing on much of this and there are probably interviews or writings that could verify the truth of anything I say but where those are is the harder part to know. Back to your comment... I am not sure Scott started the group as it just formed among three friends. A friendship that occurred since they all like singing. Scott and Mitch both have unique points to their singing abilities that puts them in the lead a lot but Kirstin is definitely a great lead as well. Avi also has a good or even great lead voice and I am not sure but I think Kevin should get more leads as well. Now they have Matt and he has a great lead vocal... too many leads and not enough songs or music from them... to do them all justice I think they need about 40 songs on each album and about 2-3 albums per year for us to get all they have to offer us... but my request for more is not humanly possible I am thinking... we all love them, all who hear them love them... an awesome group of people who give their love through their music. {I am done with my book here now... lol}

I grew up in the 1960's. So I have been around long enough to hear a LOT of different kinds of music. A singer can sing a song technically perfect, and if they don't sing it with the appropriate emotion/feeling they may as well be singing a phone book. Singing is a form of communication and to do it effectively there has to be emotion. Otherwise, it's just noise. I have heard a lot of really great singers, but I have never heard anyone convey the emotional message of a song better than Pentatonix! I have really enjoyed your reaction videos. I look forward to seeing more of them.

Pentatonix's ability to put themselves into the song is part of their magic. You can really see/hear it in their cover of "Say Something." Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) takes the lead on that one. It is one of their older ones with Avi as the bass. Another good one with Kirstie as co-lead is their cover of "Shallow," a newer one with Matt as bass.

I believe the word you're looking for is "harmony" or "harmonize." Scott, Mitch and Kirstie have been singing together since they were children, so they had most of a decade to practice with each other's voices before Pentatonix formed. This is one of the reasons the group's harmonies are so tight. Plus, of course, the skill and training everyone has had in the music field. They are all masterfully accomplished.

Pentatonix doesn't have a dedicated "lead singer." They all definitely get their share of the spotlight as you will. They are all extremely talented musicians in their own right. They decide as a group who would be the best fit for a particular lead in a song and what is needed for the backing vocals. There really is no room for ego in a group like theirs. They all have an incredibly important part to play in the production that they are creating. There are some really cool videos out their of them building a song from the beatbox up if you ever choose to check those out. (Sorry for the upcoming infodump!)
They all do have side projects and solo work if that is something you are interested in. It definitely shows the musical interests that they have outside of Pentatonix.
Scott has helped in finding Citizen Queen and Acapop Kids. He has his own Podcast that he formed over the course of the Pandemic. He also does a bit of solo music here and there or collaborations with other artists.
Matt is part of a Christian Band outside of Pentatonix.
Kevin has produced 2 EP's and has a solo CZcams channel.
Kirstin has dropped an EP. She has also been on Broadway once as part of the cast of Kinky Boots and is going a second time.
Mitch is currently working on a solo album under the name Messer and just released his first single from the album on 07/01/21. He also has a podcast that is for his patreon subscribers.
Mitch and Scott had a long term CZcams page called Superfruit and released a full length album called Future Friends that has a music video for almost every song on the album. They also did some amazing covers there as well.
Avi left the group in 2017 is also pursuing solo endeavors. He release an EP under the name Avriel and the Sequoias and also has more solo music just under the name Avi Kaplan.
There are countless songs that are worth reacting to for any number of reasons but their live versions always blow me away. I saw them in concert a few years ago and they are every bit as incredible on stage as they are in their music videos.

That's great about PTX. There is no lead singer. It's whoever can sing the feeling and get the point across. They are very giving with this. No one thinks they are special. They tell the songs with emotions.

Kirstin has grown her art so much, but you can see it coming in earlier performances like "Somebody That I used to Know" and "Say Something." Also check out the more recent "Shallow," where she and Scott emote the heck out of it - beautiful.
Scott as a baritone is the mid-range and is the most outgoing (although Kevin is very effective in interviews - probably the biggest brain, he went to Yale undergrad). But I thinks it's a mistake to think of him as though he were a boss or commander.
ETA - Also, you can find a New York Times video interview + performance here on CZcams where they discuss the role of passion/emotion in their work, and how vitally important they consider it.

Thank you for your viewpoints...I fully agree.we,as a society, have started not caring about others and only caring about ourselves now.what this society truly needs is kindness, more giving to others, understanding, patience, and putting ourselves in others positions more...or at least imagining what its like in other peoples lives before we judge them or think only about ourselves or what we can get out of every situation.its depressing how far we've gone from the times when we put others first and cared about others lives and situations. Matt is considered to be a bass but he is a very strong singer!!! and needs more solos. You should react to You're a mean one, mr grinch. Amazing grace my chains are gone. I think people are slightly confused in the comments because in their early days, especially sing-off moments, Scott was generally the lead when they started .However, now there is no lead singer. They all get the chance to have their solos. Kirstin, Mitch, Kevin, Avi and now Matt, and Scott, all have their chances at singing lead and shine in their own way without trying to rain on anyone else's parade and overtake them. They've all dabled in solo stuff and Kirstin actually has been on broadway and blossomed in confidence. You can tell from their old stuff and now how far they've grown in confidence. Kirstin is a disney princess, Mitch is a singing angel, scott is a riff-god, Avi is Jesus, Kevin is a human machine, and Matt is one of a kind and is a machine at what he does and how well he adapted into Pentatonix.

Homefree is more country vibes and voiceplay is more I wanna say musical but yeah they just ‘play’ more in their video’s. If you check them out you’ll see what I mean. From voiceplay check out: oogie boogie song, the little mermaid medley and Queen medley. Its all awesome. From homefree I would recommend ring of fire. And Nice addition, avi (jezus) is featuring the song! the song is really awesome so check it out!

There is no lead singer or actually they essentially have 4 lead singers. It all just depends on the song. Matt is the bass, but he can sing up into a really nice low tenor with rich undertones. On some songs he mostly sings bass guitar, but he has a great lead in You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch. Kirsty's mezzo soprano works really well as lead on some pop songs like Say Something and Disney princess parts and Over The Rainbow. Mitch's high tenor works really well to do most of the leads on Bohemian Rhapsody and especially in Daft Punk. Scott can sing low baritone to fairly high tenor, has more grit for certain kinds of songs and is generally a great front man. I think they kind of leaned on him to break the ice on most songs at first, but now they've got the skills and confidence to open any song. Kevin is really amazing, but has invested more time in his cello, sax and beatboxing rather than taking a lot of strong emotional vocal leads. He has been getting more small leads lately, so I hope to see more as he gets comfortable.
But most songs benefit from having at least two of them share lead.

PTX has no lead singer. If you want to hear some of the others take leads here are some suggestions:
Mitch: Aha (the live singapore version is best), Bohemian Rhapsody
Kirstie: Shallow, Amazing Grace, Water (an original of theirs)
Matt: You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch
Avi: Light In The Hallway, Standing By (both originals)
Kevin: Kevin doesn't have any leads yet because he's always beatboxing but if you want to hear him sing, check out Imagine, Mary Did You Know, or Amazing Grace (or his yt channel!)

Loved the reaction!! So, a little bit of music history for you. This song was originally written and performed by the British band Tears for Fears in 1982. The original was a lot more pop sounding. Then, it had a resurgence when it was covered by Gary Jules for the movie Donnie Darko in 2001. Jules was the one who made it a dark ballad. So, the use of the song in the video game was much later. From then, it's been covered a lot. Probably one of the more famous ones was by Adam Lambert on American Idol, when the show was a huge hit in maybe 2007? I'm not sure.

Scott isn't the lead singer, but he is the one who gets the most play because his is the mid range of all of them....more middle then extremes...more Scott. Scott is one of the original 5. Avi's replacement is Matt, the bass who sings last. To see Scott react, watch Say Something and watch his hands. They always sings with their hands.

They all take leads on different songs - it's usually assigned based on who fits the song best (although sometimes I think if someone is just a really big fan of a song they get it lol)
That being said, I think Scott has the most leads - he's got a very versatile voice that fits a lot of different styles and in the beginning, he was the most confident. Lately, the leads have been more evenly split (and Kirstie, especially, has been taking more leads - her confidence has grown exponentially in the past couple of years)
But if you ask me, Scott's voice shines best on soulful vocals.
For a fun change of pace, I suggest the Frozen Medley from Scott and Mitch's side channel, Superfruit, feauring Kirstin. They're absolutely joking around, but it's so much fun (and stick around for the bloopers after the subscribe screen)
(Also I see a lot of comments about Mitch's cover of "Your Power". He took it down from his CZcams channel, but it's still on his IGTV if you want to watch it)

Loved the reaction - hearing your perspectives, insights, and the impact of the song (historically) as well as while viewing it *IS* reacting, which is the purpose of this
    Please take on board:
    - sitting while a song plays from beginning to end, THEN commenting on things from the beginning etc loses its impact
    - anyone can simply play a song through (many do), and do a "wow, cool" reaction
    - I believe CZcams is simply ensuring that anyone who wants to view/listen to this material you react to uninterrupted, will actually go to the source (so that the original doesn't lose income)
By all means, pause, comment, enthuse, voice the moments that impact you - not getting blocked will be a positive result from your reactions, rather than reaction ONLY being done to avoid blocking (if that makes sense?)
Last but not least - if you're using a PC (not sure about Macs etc), SPACE bar will pause a vid, and the < key will rewind the vid 5 seconds - less fiddling around, quicker, simpler than trying to aim the mouse everywhere

I would say that there's no lead singer; everyone gets a chance to shine in just about every song, though Scott tends to start a lot of the songs. just depends on what kind of voice is needed for which song. for example, Mitch takes the lead on Bohemian Rhapsody because his voice is the only one in the group that I feel that is close enough to Freddie Mercury's, though Scott and Kirstie both get a solo as well. Matt takes the lead on Mr. Grinch because his voice suits the song best. you get the picture. since you spoke so much about them singing from their hearts (which I totally agree with, btw) you should react to Amazing Grace next. you'll be absolutely blown away!

Ok, PTX is perfect! Tears For Fears wrote this song in the 80's. They wanted to pay for therapy for themselves. That was their reason to form TFF. Tears for Fears is named from a theory by Arthur Janov an American Psychologist who treated John Lennon. They wanted to go to the US for therapy. You are comparing the Gary Jules version from Donnie Darko, not the original TEARS FOR FEARS version.
