+++ thank you for sharing this video. Just bought a house and had fig tree. Have no clue what to do and how to care for it. You video helps but still what do I need to feed it for the soil ? Just water only?? Or All purpose nutrient ? The homers left it while the fruit was ready. I ate most of it and it is very very delicious. I read about most of the benefit of this fruit so I’m seeking for more info please and thank you. +++
He's right about scarring above a node but there's a better way to do it. Actually press in with the knife a little bit and make a small rectangular cut above the node and remove the outer bark.
As he suggests, allow some stems to grow from the base. Select 3-5 and head cut all at even height about 2-3 feet tall. These becomes main the structural branches or scaffolds. The heading cut encourages new growth at and near top of scaffolds. In winter select 2-3 new of this growth and head cut all back to 1-2 feet in length. These become secondary scaffolds. Allow new growth in spring from secondary scaffolds to fruit. After dead of winter remove last year’s fruitwood. You can propagate these cuttings to create new plants if you wish. This approach maintains a large bush form 6 feet tall with open center that is easy to maintain and produces consistently each year. Might even fruit 2x.
What if it's mid August and I haven't gotten any fruit yet? Can I prune now? My trees are just getting taller and wider but no fruit. They were initially planted in 2021
You need to wait till they are dormant, meaning all their leaves have dropped and its just the bare branches left. this usually happens during winter, December-January.
You can propagate all the cuttings too! I have an absurd amount of fig trees because they’re so easy to start
How about do you propagate them? Just rooting the branch? Thank you
All repply
Hi.from South Africa 🇿🇦 🌍 thanks 😊 🙏 for your advice l have a fig 🌳

I was brought a 7 year old fig for my 50th birthday I am so scared to prune it. Its a single stem standard. Any advice?

you prone it in the spring or fall
Repurpose the cuttings! ❤😊
my tree has about thirty trunks lol. i have a big job on my hands
When’s the best time to prune?
february.
prune in the winter?
Same thing for a new foot-high tree?
Squirrels eat all my figs.
Be careful with the root system of that tree, do not put it close to your house or pool.
Figs are mostly fruit and partly bug. 😂
