- Devil Doll is an Italian-Slovenian experimental rock band formed in 1987 by the mysterious "Mr. Doctor". The band has gained a cult following, taking influences from gothic rock, classical and slavonic folk music, and fronted by the sprechgesang of Mr. Doctor himself. Devil Doll albums were all released on small labels in limited quantities. The band is notable for very lengthy epics, none under 20 minutes and one that nearly enters the 80 minute mark.
"After the release of The Sacrilege Of Fatal Arms, I started to record an album which was going to be entitled The Day Of Wrath. In the middle of the recordings the studio was completely destroyed by a fire, whose origin is still shrouded in the mist of post-war vendettas. I saved my skin but not the tapes, of which only an unmixed cassette survived. We were consequently forced to re-start the work in a different studio. Dies Irae resurfaced from the ruins of The Day Of Wrath and is the most complex and artistically rewarding of the five albums reissued by Belle Antique. The concept acts on two levels: a series of paradoxical philosophic questions connected with love, life and afterlife, culminating with the killing of the loved person in order to guarantee her eternal life . . Every passage is crystalline in its logic, though elliptically expressed in the flashes of poetic metaphors. The second level is personal. The lyrics, the artwork, the music feature over five hundred references, quotations, tiny clues which could reveal (to the most careful and prepared listener) all the influences which have fed my soul through the years. From a lyrical viewpoint I was particularly delighted by the way I managed to describe the killing ("and the virgin blade kisses, freeing, your white throat") and by the last monologue of the man in a strait-jacket followed by the orchestral grand finale. From the musical viewpoint I still have a preference for the frightening "Incubus" section. In fact, I had composed and recorded two of them, one should have been featured on the European version of the album, and the other on the American pressing which was cancelled at the last minute. The material we recorded for Dies Irae filled altogether over 700 minutes of master tapes: the tiny clips which are part of the "Incubus" were in fact long compositions of which only a few seconds have been randomly chosen, illogically, as it happen in the worst nightmare, which is uncontrollable by reason." - Hudba

It's incredible how I've been listening to the same several Devil Doll releases for years and it never gets played out. Even the best of songs get old after you listen to them for a while. But not this. This is timeless. This is perfect. Thank you Mr. Doctor for all the music you gave us.

This guy is, more than amazing. Sorry that I have no clear words to express how much Mr.Doctor is creative. Seems that he emotionally moves back and forth between horror and aggressiveness. Fast but smooth, gothic and classical, bizarre and twisted. What else. Far beyond expectable, broadens creativity, open eyes towards abyss and deep into darkness. I am happy that Mr.doctor does not keep releasing albums as all his past works remain as legends. A fan from Seoul.

In the internet age, this would be seriously surprising, however I doubt they did much touring after Sacreligium. Dies Irae would mark their last album together, and that was in 1996, still before the explosion of media services like youtube. Everything this band does is kept under lock and key by Mr. Doctor. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say he enjoys the process of creation but is very nervous about sharing, regardless of the lofty words he uses regarding his own works.

Why?
I disagree with that view. Mr. Doctor may prefer to be less public than most artists, but he still sells CDs and his book. If he didn't want any publicity on it, he wouldn't do it. And I'm pretty sure he still has internet access and could complain any time he wanted. If he did contact me (I do have contact with devildoll.nl people because of the CDs I buy) I would take the songs off. But it has been almost 2.5 years, so I guess he really doesn't care.
discussions with the guy handling his releases in the states suggest Mr. Doctor does not have internet and is happy without it.
I have been in touch through social networks with Maestro Paolo Zizich (backing voice of Devil Doll). He, even though is a collaborator and a friend of Mr. Doctor, does know absolutely nothing when and if there is new material that Mr. Doctor has made during these years and if it will be ever released. Confidentially he told me that Mr. Doctor doesn't have nothing to say further and personally I believe that he stopped to think about Devil Doll. Therefore folks peace your mind and heart, Devil Doll won't release other new material. Sad but true.

Art without an audience isn't Art. While I understand some creators may prefer a more intimate connection with their audience, I don't think you can consider something a masterpiece if it sits on a shelf never heard or seen. While having it on youtube may violate his wishes and your sensibilities, I and countless others would never have discovered it.
