That is one cool pipe! I like that ball & Claw design. I love the smell of pipe tobacco. I don't smoke, except a cigar once or twice a year. I thought about buying a pipe and some of that whiskey tobacco.....or maybe cherry......but as a trapper, I think it would hurt my chances, although I do know trappers that smoke. I chewed Levi Garrett for at least 10 years, but it started causing me too much heartburn......Doc says that stuff is bad for ya, but none of us get's out of here alive anyway.... The plastic mouthpiece used to be made out or tortoise shell a long time back.
yeah i think if ya dont smoke already then why start? but if ya do already then enjoy it. couple of cigars a year is certainly reasonable. honestly i haven't found the tobacco smell to give me away but i also live right where i hunt so those animals are already used to me being around smelling like pipe tobacco and bacon. ive been sitting against a tree smoking a pipe and had all kinds of critters run up on me. i think it has more to do with what is out of place. seems likely a wolf would probably be more suspicious of an unusual smell than a raccoon who spent last night eating cat food and garbage at 5 different houses. so my thought is enjoy it if ya want to or dont. no big deal. anyway take care
@@timberdrifter8225 I agree 100% ! Trapping lures work partly out of curiosity, so something that smells that good might actually help. It's hard to know for sure. I do like the way it smells! Can't stand cigarette smoke, but pipe tobacco is 100% different critter!

Hey Mr. timberdrifter I’d just like to let you know that I really look up to you. You’re a nice calm staple in this ever chaotic world. Everything’s so fast and I’ve just kinda been trying to slow down and appreciate the world around me. I’m a teenager and I’m trying hard to live up to being a good man and just listening to your experiences gives me something to look up to in terms of how I’d like to conduct myself. I just wanted to say I appreciated it and god bless
I take that as quite a compliment. im glad you enjoy the videos and find something worthwhile here. i have to say that i tend to make videos when im in a good mood and the character you see here isn't necessarily representative of who i am in daily life. im as flawed, ignorant, angry and ridiculous as anyone else. perhaps more so. im working on being a good man but i fall short at times. stay calm, be good to people, be dangerous and be wise. take care

Nice story there on the meer TD. Good to see you. Nice to know your neighbor scene is decent and relatively secured, a bad one can be an annoying situation, especially when you're out in an area where one would expect some peace and quiet. Made some acorn flour eons ago, didn't leech out enough tannins, difficult biscuit to get down.
ah, bitter biscuits hey? hard to choke down for sure. yeah its good to be secure in the home place. perhaps one of these days ill be able to buy my own property. but then I'll have to deal with new neighbors. i dont look forward to that.

Looking mighty dapper in that wool vest, been looking for one like that for a long time. Fine story about the pipe. that vest was a Christmas present from a good friend several years ago. its a favorite. yeah i love the old pipes. i try not to chew on them😁. or at least not do more damage then they have already acquired. be a good steward? something like that. but some things were meant to be used and i use them up and wear them out. old pipes, guns, knives, books etc. im not sure what it is about some particular items that makes me want to preserve them rather then using them as intended. who knows? nostalgia is a strange thing.
G’day TD! Most of my pipes have a story to tell. Most are connected with memories or friends. I have an egg and claw. I’ve had since 2015 and put hundreds of bowls through it but it’s never coloured much beyond what yours is. I guess I just have be patient with it. Enjoy the nut crackin. Lol.
i guess meershaums are kind of an exercise in patience. some of them take forever to color much at all and others color strangely in unexpected ways. i dont know. i just smoke them. i definitely have a few pipes that have stories associated with them or people that come to mind whenever i smoke them. its kinda nice. take care
Really great to see you. Looks like a great day out. Great pipes and stories. I need a smaller meerschaum. The one I got very kindly gifted to me has a huge bowl, too big for me often times. Have a great week👍🏻

thank you. i inherited that hat from a good friend. he really wanted me to have it. unfortunately it was a bit too small for me. so i had to steam and stretch it some. which accounts for its slightly beat up appearance.
From what I can gather from viewing the claw and egg I can tell you that in our shop a light weight claw and egg of this quality would retail for at least 250 to 300 bucks. Congrats on a beauty and I completely understand your hesitation to accept any box that comes to your door, especially these days. Keep puffin.
well then i certainly got a good deal. most of the meers ive bought have been in the $100 or less range. since i tend to break them i find it difficult to justify spending more. im really better of with a briar or cob but i sure like the look and smoking characteristics of a decent meer.
Lookin' sharp, T. Enjoyed listening to the story of this meerschaum. Seems like it always had your name on it and what a gift to have so many fond memories of conversations with that guy every time you pick it up. I hope November treated you well. Take care.
hey TD - very nice meer & super cool story LOL i'd hazard to say that i also spent a bit too much on some of my nicer meers like that ... i have a bent stem meer like your claw - a trick i use to pass a pipe cleaner is to slightly bend the tip & twirl it as i'm working it through the stem/shank - eventually it'll snake its way into the bowl & pass all the way through
howdy. that's a good tip. i do that with several of my favorite pipes. i have a meer lined bent billiard that requires a pipe cleaner to be bent 25 degrees at the tip then just above that about 40 degrees in the opposite direction. then once inside the pipe it has to be twisted around till it catches. it's about like picking a lock. haven't figured out how to re drill that one either. I'll probably just keep putting up with it😉 take care thanks for stopping by.
Red oak acorns --- well, five or six changes of water with some bicarbonate might just be enough to take the pucker away. It's pretty stiff competition here with the deer, turkey and squirrels to collect the white oak acorns before they vanish. One particular tree is especially sweet. The pipe seems worth the negotiated price given your history with it and the seller. My white Thanksgiving melted back to mud, but seems the cold is soon to return. Many happy smokes.
had a white Thanksgiving here. but not cold. i got lucky collecting these oak nuts. i was painting a garage with a large steel roof while the oaks were really shedding. i simply crawled around and collected the acorns that hit the roof and fell off the edge in great piles. several minutes at the end of each day yealded several gallons of acorns by the end of the week. now nearly a month later and 5 or 6 changes ow water. there is only a hint of bitterness. not enough to offend even the most sensitive to wild foods. take care

The stem on that pipe is likely made of a polyester resin. I have a meerschaum that I love with a stem made of the same material. It’s a bit puzzling why the material isn’t more commonly used in pipes as it’s relatively durable, soft on the teeth, and doesn’t oxidize. Thanks for the video.

If you are referring to the stem, it isn't bakelite. It might be a type of phenolic resin, but it's too soft and flexible to be bakelite and it doesn't have that signature oder the bakelite does when heated.

Aren't acorns notoriously bitter? Leaching some of the tannins would help with that, but are they not still bitter?
