The Adaptation of Oregairu's Confession Scene

  • Oregairu's Confession Scene is like most of the franchise in that there are plenty of callbacks within its text and a litany of subtext to explore...and we'll explore that here - but is it a good adaptation of the Light Novel? What does Studio Feel add and subtract to the source material that improves, lessens, or changes the value and text of the original? And is there a specific reason why I keep coming back to Hiratsuka time after time?

@@joseramirez-hh2sw I agonize so much while watching the show to find a answer of what that line mean and even discussed with some people in the comments of the episode that all use of shots and use of ost just pass without me noticed. So I'm really looking foward for an analyses of the direction in the scene, because that is a thing that I can't do and why I love this channel so much and now I'm building hype for the video about Haruno.

@@davifelizardo4187 It's a shame no one has replied to you about it. It's two years late because I'm just seeing it now, but here's my own two cents' worth on Haruno's "You can't get drunk" line:
The first time I heard it, I immediately thought of the term "love drunk". This specific term refers to when people are caught in the moment and swept away by the tide of romantic feelings. They act like fools, and they do stupid things. And maybe later they "sober up" and realize how much of an idiot they were being.
If you broaden the term's definition, you can apply it to any situation where you are caught in your feelings and can't think straight. Call back to S1 E9 (the fireworks episode with Yuigahama):
Hachiman: "80% of the world's male population is prone to thinking, 'Hey, does she like me?' That's how they think and live. So I need to be careful and tell myself, 'Not a chance in hell'."
I can go down my own rabbit hole explaining how I think this ties back into Haruno's character (which I find *extremely* interesting from my own interpretations of her behavior). But for now, I'll just say my take on the "you can't get drunk" line is Haruno saying that both she and Hachiman don't get caught in the moment. They're too jaded by the life they've lived up to now.

One thing I found interesting about this confession scene is the act of handholding itself (very lewd I know)
In S2, after Hachiman “confesses” to Ebina, Yui grabs his sleeve to tell him that he should think more about other people’s feelings and his actions were wrong. After she literally grabs his attention, she lets go.
It happens again during the genuine scene, Yui grabs Hachiman’s sleeve to tell him to chase after Yukino. He breaks her grip and says he can walk on his own.
Then in S3, after the prom is a success, Hachiman leaves to hear out Haruno, but this time Yukino grabs his sleeve. She wanted to hear what Hachiman was going to say about the club before being interrupted, but Hachiman breaks her grip and continues to Haruno.
And finally in the confession scene, Hachiman grabs Yukino’s hand because if he were to let go, they wouldn’t see each other again. Grabbing her hand as opposed to her sleeve is significant in this scene because Hachiman’s actions here cement a proper relationship through a confession.
At least that’s how the anime HANDled it.
It’s an interesting distinction that the LNs have Hachiman grab her sleeve instead of her hand. I think the act of grabbing their sleeve shows the characters trying to reach out to someone who isn’t willing to accept it. Which is the case for all these scenes, including the bridge scene. In the LN, I think having Hachiman grab the sleeve shows that from his experiences, this is the only way to get a person’s attention in a meaningful way for those in the service club. Although in the bridge scene, Hachiman fully reaches out to Yukino instead of just grabbing her attention.
It’s another interesting difference in the anime adaptation as actual handholding shows a great breakthrough visually, it shows that Hachiman is reaching out further to Yukino. The LN on the other HAND, shows that grabbing the sleeve gives characterization to Hachiman and Yukino. It shows that they are still very clumsy when it comes to communicating their feelings, and they come to accept those parts of themselves anyway.

This was a BANGER analysis and I just love hearing the classic intro you always do. I feel like snafu has done what most anime haven't and that's give you the subtext without giving it to you. Through the visuals and the characters action you really paint a picture as to what they're thinking without a line of text saying it for you. I would definetly like to see a video on how visually they express their characters. They use the idea of "show don't tell" perfectly for an adaptation of a VN. Just wanted to show a little appreciation for a fan of your content, thanks as always.

A bit long, but I'd like to share my thoughts here as well:
What I see here in this episode when I watched this was more of a total recognition of Hachiman and Yukino as "human beings" interwoven from one another, rather than as mere "individuals" having such fictitious relationships (more of a subject-object relation, not directed to them, but to the situation they are into). It is, in the very sense, that both of them understood the weight of their existences in each other, not merely because of needing each other just for the sake of 'saving each other from their own mess', but more of this person has shaped their respective individualities. With the two of them realizing they have the least time left before their high school lives are over, they are scrambling to convey what they should; however, given their respective situations (and being socially inept in expressing their feelings) it turned to be difficult in expressing their genuine selves. Hachiman himself knew that his search for a genuine relationship has come to an end: it just requires him to convey them in a way that he speaks thru his own heart and mind, both in sync. (Even the episode title says it all, "Our feelings are conveyed through only the warmth of our touch" - the anime gave justice to what has been long awaited for the past 8 years: Hachiman and Yukino admitting to themselves that they long for each other's existence, despite the differences)
Though the striking difference indeed is present both in the LN and the anime, what makes them unique from each other is that both of them employs the power of imagination through the human creative mind. For the LN, it is the monologues that let us be immersed in the thoughts of Hachiman and Yukino in their respective shoes, mulling over such thoughts in a situation you are having a hard time expressing yourself with. The anime, on the other hand, exercises the aesthetic tendencies to deliver explicitly and implicitly what was found in the source material, whether visual shift, colors or even the camera leveling.
All in all, what the three main characters wanted are also the things we wanted: genuine relationships while forming our own identities. In a world wherein everything can be just easily fabricated, we seek those who we consider to be part of our genuine growth in search of our individuality. Though we shape our own paths, we all know to ourselves how others can contribute also to our own growth, and likewise take shape as well in the path that we will take.
Replay Value, I really appreciate the fact that you were able to raise the subtext to a level that an ordinary viewer (or reader, if he/she looks in the LN) can understand simply. I admire your work and the passion to give a thoughtful analysis in the episodes, characters and even the whole setup of the show. I'm a university instructor today (I was still a HS student when the first show was aired), and I can say that I always recommend the show to my students because it truly reflects our nature as human beings. I'd recommend as well in the upcoming term your analysis for them to have a good context in understanding the show. Many thanks for your hardwork!

Heh just 2 hours ago I was watching some Oregeiru youtuber content and ended on your podcast episode with Subtitled Anime, those vids were all about the first two season and unfortunately as great as the timing of your video now is, I can´t watch it yet because Oregairu is my favourite show and as such I really felt what you guys where talking about on the podcast, it is exhausting watching that content sometimes and the last few months I was just not in the right headspace to give it the watch it deserved (hence why I was trying to get in the mood with some analysis vids of it) so unfortunately I gotta push this watch off until then as well :P

I teared up a little while I was watching the video, I'm slowly starting to realize what I've witnessed and what oregairu really means to me. I'm sad that it's over but I'm glad it happened. I'm also convinced that I should in fact read the light novel now because it looks so good.

Your videos are always an intersection of passion and education for me. I love how you convey your thoughts and, as other comments say, come from a place of positivity. I think specifically because the Oregairu community has been largely negative in it's reception of S3 (I really should stay away from that sub), I haven't allowed myself to enjoy it as much as I should. I'm going to rewatch the series again sometime soon, but one thing is for certain: my love for this series. It's a masterpiece for me and so are you videos. Happy holidays and thank you for sharing with us.

I think I'll add that the whole LN vs anime discourse is so tiring at this point that I'm glad you were able to put a refreshing spin on it. I believe you've already hit on adaptations vs source before (my memory is foggy), but I dislike the idea that anything but a 1-for-1 adaptation means that it was not a true way of experiencing a story. I've found a lot of the criticism is a result of expectations not being fulfilled in the eyes of source material readers. If the way which you understand the story was from the source, I can understand why an adaptation may not be what you would have wanted, but from an anime only perspective, we can't feel we've missed out on material that we didn't know could have existed. Even without, I felt that the third season did a great job. This may not have been the story that LN readers were expecting, but it was a damn good one. Discussion on Yui screen time vs Yukino screen time is also strange to me because I think it did a great job of establishing the feeling that they were drifting apart. We were just as anxious as Hachiman and Yui while they struggled with their feelings. More Yukino screen time could have added clarity, but it also comes at the expense of that. The video spoke on it, but adaptation is a series of trade-offs. I don't think staff went into the season deciding that Yukino screen time was less important than Yui's. One was just more necessary to show. I could type all day about this subject so I'll leave it here. Sorry for the wall of text.

@@TheCathordran You legitimately summed up my entire thoughts on all of the S3 hate. The subreddit was just full of LN readers hating S3, it was so hard for anime-onlys to enjoy the show. I've always felt that if an anime is good on it's own, it should be able to stand without only being compared to the source material. Happy to see someone else sees it the same way I do. Thank you for this.

@@HollowMugetsuIchigo I'm happy I wasn't just typing into the abyss! I've struggled with my thoughts when it comes to season 3 because It's really stood as a representation of staying true to myself while acknowledging and understanding others' feelings. I'm not "right" in my beliefs just as they aren't with theirs. Criticism/analysis is a balance of being honest with yourself while also allowing for new perspectives to possibly shape your beliefs. That doesn't mean that they will, but being open to that possibility allows us to grow as individuals and thinkers. Social media has a propensity to focus on the toxic aspects of this process and tends to bum me out because of that.

@@TheCathordran holy shit this is exactly how I felt about S3. Seeing the constant hate from the subreddit really tested my patience on the series, and it's funny because S3 actually elevated Oregairu from my 6th favorite anime to my #1 favorite. I also felt the same way, I acknowledged the complaints that people had (even if I didn't agree with most of them) while trying to stay true to my own opinion. I'm glad that you still enjoyed this season despite the popular opinion (mainly from some of the LN readers, not from the anime-onlys) on that subreddit.

I really want you to make an analysis on Haruno, she's really underrated or in the shadows of Hachiman, Yukino and Yui (they all are great too).
She's quite complex as a character, her motives and thoughts are so conflicting like a real person. A very easy top 5 Oregairu character (would be top 3 or 4 considering only the anime). Love her!
Zaimokuza and Hayama are also really underlooked alongside Haruno, they all are such great characters. Zaimokuza is sadly marginalised in the anime but the LN does some great things with his character.

I would love to know your opinion of when Yukino says "suki" at the end of the episode. My interpretation of it is that since they're now on the same wavelength they've built up the groundwork of all the little negative things as well as all the positive things and can now compact all that into the single word "suki". But it isn't a generic one, but a genuine one. It's unique to them, built up of things only between them and saying "suki" to anyone else would be built up of different experiences and emotions.

As a novel reader who dislike a lot the season 3 because it's a very bad adaption from my POV (except at some points like the confession scene actually). I really, really loved this video. As usual, you're making a good analysis, pointing all the small details that may seems unimportant but are actually what make this scene so good, and end the video in litteraly the best way possible (Oregairu always hit with the LN chapters of episode titles and I love it).
Great thank for the video, I'll be sure to share it on the french Oregairu Discord (need to educate the plebs! :p), really happy to see an analysis of this scene that I love so much.

I can understand why LN readers are mad about S3 adaptation since it doesn't do every scene in the volumes 12-14 justice, but I feel that as a stand-alone anime, it's still amazing. As a LN reader, do you think the show is good when not compared to the LN and just as it's own story?
