    Nice setup!
    You are correct that people will say they will drown. I have accidentally killed some in the past due to drowning in my pond within their enclosure. I discovered some box turtles sink and some float! After killing two of mine by drowning, I went and checked to find the ones that float. I only left the "floater" in the enclosure. The following week another one drowned! Turns out they can float sometimes and sink on other days. Be careful! Must have multi underwater ramps to the surface.

    I'd replace that pond with something that's much shallower if I were you. No point in risking a turtle drowning.

      @Silehnt Před 6 lety +5

      Turtles float occasionally, depending on how much air they have trapped, but most will sink like a stone and have trouble swimming back to the surface. Trust me, you want a shallow pool, around 3" - 4" deep, if you're going to be keeping box and wood turtles in the enclosure.

      Allahja Flowers if they flip they'll drown too. It happened to mine after being outdoors for a year. It swam great. Got in and out no problem. One day he was getting eaten by his pond mates. It's a risk. Hawks, raccoons, cats... It's a risk. Just is.

    That one box turtle seemed to have a hard time getting out of the pond, maybe set up the rocks a bit differently?

    My 3 box turtles swam too. If they flip in the water they'll drown. Starchild drowned. He was outdoor for a year. Just sayin I used to tell people that they swam just fine. The two other box turtles are awol in the backyard. Good luck dude.

    Curious on your thoughts. Do you feed your box turtles wild mushrooms? Reason I ask is because if I haven’t watched a wild box turtle munching on wild strawberries I’ve seen them shrooming. Just curious as I’m considering purchasing a CB box this spring/summer. Also are their any breeders you’d recommend for box turtles?

    I found a red ear slider this morning in my yard that is blind in one eye and seems physically weak any recommendations? Should I keep him and look after him temporarily or release him?

    • @ShelledReptiles
      @ShelledReptiles  Před 6 lety

      The Reptile room
      Personally, I would release him. If it’s a female it’s probably out laying eggs. After digging nests they can be a little weak for a few days. A turtle can live just fine with only one eye. I have found many healthy turtles that’s a blind in an eye.

    Poor box turtles. They're species is stressed enough In the wild without being collected and forced into a pen. I used to do the same thing with box turtles when I was younger, I had a similar pen and they hibernated outdoors. As you grow older I hope you realize, as I eventually did, box turtles should be kept in the wild as their species can't handle this additional strain. Their populations are threatened in most states. Common turtles such as Painteds, cage em up all you want.
