  • This video shows the process of How to Propagate Illinois Everbearing Mulberry trees using softwood cuttings and a mist irrigation system. The process involves taking cuttings during the summer, dipping the cutting in rooting hormone, and putting the cutting into a soil that drains very well. Then you mist the leaves every five to ten minutes during daylight hours. The Galcon programming video is located here: • How to Program the Gal...

    Great video! It's been a few years now, but do you remember roughly what percentage of the cuttings rooted successfully? You noted that the other row of mulberries in the nursery bed weren't doing too well. I'd like to try this method instead of air layering the Illinois Everbearing.

    Where the leaves appear are the nodes, the inter-nodes are the spaces between the nodes, good video overall, Thanks.

    nice instructional video on cutting propagation. Question for you...you're planting these in August, how long do they sit in the sand till you replant in soil? Do they have enough room to establish a nice root system without tangling into the neighboring cuttings? Thanks :)

      Thank you for the great questions Oneda! I had the same questions myself when I started out and I should have covered them in the original video. Because I slacked, I went ahead and made a separate video to give details on your questions. The video is linked below. The quick answers are: The softwood cuttings will go dormant in four months and can be moved at that time without shocking them. As for the spacing, I adjust spacing depending on the plant and root type. There are many more details in this CZcams video: czcams.com/video/srMr23pJXKY/video.html

      Can't remember the exact percentage success. As pointed out in many comments, mulberry is very easy to propagate so I'm sure it was quite high.

    How long should you wait till you see any growth in your cutting are planting?

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  Před 3 lety

      A lot of dependencies. In a humid climate with just the right sun and water you should have root growth in a week or two and added leave growth in less than a month. In less than ideal conditions it will take longer.

    How do you prune these? Does pruning effect its everbearing qualities?

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  Před 2 lety

      I prune dead wood and damaged wood. Then I shape the tree to the desired shape and propagate the cuttings from the good wood that was trimmed. The fruit grows on the new growth, so if you are pruning in spring before the plant has fruited, you will have reduced fruit.

    Hello, do you have any tips on propagating elderberries?

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  Před 3 lety +1

      Wow! I just assumed I had done a video on this in the past because I propagate these all the time. Thanks for pointing out that I missed this. Elderberry are extremely easy to propagate. You can use a mist irrigation system like is shown in this video. However, if you don't have that setup and don't want to go through the expense of setting one up, here are some other ways: Hardwood cuttings - take cuttings in the winter and just stick them in some soil. They will likely root and grow the following spring. One of my favorite methods is just to dig up the suckers that elderberries have and put the sucker in a pot. Put the sucker in the shade and keep it watered for a few weeks and it should take off for you.

    • @perun3706
      @perun3706 Před 5 lety +2

      Cut few and stick them in a wet soil. Or in a cut bottle but you need to wet it a lot. No root hormone necessary. Got a massive mulberry is like 20 years old but is a full fledged tree at this point.

    Thank you for your nice video. Do you graft the mulberries in your farms? May I ask you, if is possible to show us how
    to graft a normal mulberry tree to an overhanging tree. Thank you very
    much.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  Před 7 lety

      Hello Blerina! I do not graft the mulberry trees. I'll likely be doing some grafting later this year on other plants and will do a video on how to do that. I'm not sure what you mean by an overhanging tree. It should work if the overhanging tree is a mulberry. You can not successfully graft a mulberry onto a non-mulberry tree. For example, you can't graft a mulberry onto an oak tree. You can graft a white mulberry onto a red mulberry. They just have to be in the same family.

    • @blerinakorbelova2454
      @blerinakorbelova2454 Před 7 lety

      Hello, thank you for your answer. Overhanging I mean that: naturally the mulberries grow as a huge tree. So when you don´t have so much place in your garden, the method of grafting of normal mulberry to whiping(overhanging) tree is a good solution, also the tree looks nice. Using such method of grafting the tree/branches doesn´t grow up-side direction but down-side. Of course I´m trying to graft a mulberry onto mulberry tree. There must be some secret how to graft it to whiping tree. I beleive that it will not be so difficult but you must now how to do it exactly. You can find so many videos about the other kinds of grafting but for the method I´m asking I could not found it till now. Best regards, Blerina
