Tom Selleck had a recurring role on the Rockford Files......he took note of how James treated
everyone on set. When he was given the role of "Magnum" the producers wanted his character
to be a dashing ladies man. Tom convinced them that Magnum should be just a regular guy, flaws
and all. Very much like Jim Rockford. Good move.

Mr. Garner was on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson one evening. Mr. Carson asked him what he contributed to his long-lasting relationship with his wife. James said, "The success was being able to say just two words often, those two words were, 'yes dear." I took those words to heart and I can say it has helped with my relationship with my wife.

Very insightful. I'm watching "Rockford Files" now and I see the charismatic charm of Garner as the heft which makes every episode entertaining. Brando is overpraised considerably while Garner is the real deal with versatile expressions that may seem faked but are not. Brando is terrified to be thought weak while Garner plays himself relaxed knowing he's strong within.

My husband and I had the pleasure of spending 2 weeks on the set of “Decoration Day” with James Garner and Bill Cobbs in June of 1990. Our little tin roof pre Civil War little home was used as the home of “Gee” played by Mr. Bill Cobbs. Both Mr. Garner and Mr. Cobbs were true gentlemen. Both men made very nice company. They were polite to everyone working on the set and to my family and friends who visited. I had three horses in the pasture. Someone left the barn door open and my horses just walked out of the barn and into the yard among the cameras and other expensive equipment. I could picture the horses bumping into a camera. Mr. Garner and I were talking between shots when we saw the horses coming. Mr. Garner and I turned around and walked them back to the barn without incident. The barn door was wide open. While closing the door Mr. Garner looked at me and said something like “One if these city slickers must have gone in to pet the horses and didn’t have enough sense to shut the gate.” We both had a bit of a laugh about it. We had a great time that I’ll never forget. He told me that Julie Andrews and Doris Day were his favorite ladies to work with. He told me about accidentally breaking Ms, Day’s ribs while picking her up while making “Move Over, Darling” She was giving Polly Bergen a rough back rub in the scene and he pulled her off of Ms. Bergen. When he picked her up he didn’t know that her broke her ribs, and she finished the scene in great pain and no complaints . He said that she was a real trouper. He talked about Ms. Andrews and Ms. Day like he was a little bit in love with both of them, but I could tell how much he loved his wife. He talked very sweetly about her and Gigi. RIP friend.

Anyway, on my list of the greats who I liked very much, and watch over and over, never tire of them...James Garner. Hi Age of Vintage, how are you going? This is a fascinating insight into the lives of James Garner & Steve McQueen. I loved him in the TV show The Rockford Files. He was brilliant in The Great Escape, A Movie version of Maverick starring along side him was Mel Gibson & Jodie Foster. Victor /Victoria with Julie Andrews. One of his standout performances was in the film The Notebook, playing alongside him were Rachel Mcadams, Ryan Gosling, as the young lovers & with Gena Rowlands & himself when they got older. He was a very handsome, charismatic, faithful, & just an all round affable guy who was an extremely gifted actor. His problems with Steve McQueen, was based on Steve always wanting top billing, was never happy if he thought someone else had a better character than him, he actually could be quite a pain on set as he always wanted the best of everything, it has been commented he was quite jealous of any other actor who played in the same movie as him. James Garner passed away at the age of 86 in 2014, he is survived by his wife Lois Clarke & his two daughters. Another Hollywood Great gone forever, thank goodness for DVD's & television. The Rockford Files was one of my favorite shows. Here's a strapping guy a who behaves the way a real person his size who actively uses his interject does - reason it out and use force only when absolutely can't be avoided, then run away. He is a private eye who's keen of consequences for causing a fracas.. He just wants to get the job as low key and with the least amount of muscle used.
I think most would find Hunter a watchable show- I'd start with the pilot, which starrs Brian Dennehy in a notable role.
When Rockford punched someone he threw his whole body into it and immediately wrong his hand in pain.
    That's a real reaction there!
I liked that MacGyver (1985-89) did the same.

Would have been prudent if the still(!) photos illustrated the spoken narration - and the contradictions in the description of Garner & McQueen's relationship doesn't improve the credibility of the information throughout.
Otherwise, a comfortable voice and an interesting story.

Of course, I too was a little in love with James Gardner. Practically every one of his characters he played I fell in love with. As for James Gardner the man, I definitely was not in love with. I didn’t know him at all. Maybe if I had met him and got to know him I might’ve been in love with him a little bit or a lot. One thing that always talked at my heart was a man that was loyal to his wife. Without fail out fall in love with them, due to the fact that they are in love with their wife. This love is not a romantic love. But a cherished love out of respect.

NBC 's Hunter (1984-90) seems inspired by Rockford Files with three exceptions:
    1. Hunter worked in law enforcement
    2. His humor was Dryer (pun)
    3. Hunter had regular run-ins with his dad who is a crime boss who keeps appealing for his son to join him and /or "look the other way." How are those for bonding moments?

I've heard Garner say McQueen looked up to him like an older brother .
Garner badmouthed McQueen and Charles Bronson in his autobiography.
Waited untill they'd been dead a few years .

McQueen and Bronson both had very rough childhoods that probably effected them for the rest of their lives. Bronson's family was so poor during the depression that when he was five he had to wear a hand me down dress from his older sister because they couldn't afford to buy clothes for him.
