So far there is nothing greek about his films. You could say that his film Sacred Deer and Labstor looks more Irish than british. Kakojannis a cypriot film director in the 60s was awarded with Óscar for his english speaking film, Zorbas the Greek, but all the caracters, the music and the Script were greekthemed. In Lanthimos films you dont see any greek characters, greek actors or any sort of greek music. Anything he has achieved so far is also on his own effort. Nobody really payed any attetion to him in Greece and the greek center of cinematography has never financed any of his films. The Irish Element Productions financed his films Labstor, sacred deer and the Favourite.

@@janhamburger1690 "In Lanthimos films you dont see any greek characters, greek actors or any sort of greek music."
First of all all of Yorgos's first 3 movies are in greek with greek actors (Dogtooth got nominated for an Oscar)
In the Lobster there are MANY greek songs in the soundtrack throughout as well as greek actors. Killing of the Sacred Deer had many parallels to a greek tragedy.
Also i don't see how Yorgos needs to make "greek themed films" whatever that even means for greeks so to be proud of a guy that started from Athens,Greece making movies with his friends and is now one of the top talents in Hollywood.

Yorgos doesn't need to please anyone here. He doesn't get half the credit he deserves in his home country. My script teacher the other day was like "he lost all the baftas for directing!". "The awards he got were all for his co stars!". A classmate then asked: "oh so which awards didn't he get? There's only one director award as far as I know" and she answers: "Yeah! That one. He didn't get best director!". He lost to Spike Lee and Alfonso. What the fuck is wrong with you.

Loved what he said about limitations with English speaking film. He’s really getting at something specific here I even find when watching US production films where you feel a certain tick box has to be met and there is a no go zone which must be avoided at all costs. From really loving European / soviet or just non US American cinema, I find the shackles are let loose which allows for true creative and original expression!

His movies are definitely not for everyone and it's totally valid to be legitly upset by them and not into it. I think he feels that way too. I'm just so fascinated by how his works make people react in all sorts of ways. I love them to death. Still need to see Dogtooth and The Favorite but TKOASD is my second favorite movie of all time and one I am utterly profoundly obsessed with.
