Little tip on hotel cancellations; ring the hotel and don't cancel the room but move it (the booking, not the room - that's quite hard work and needs more planning...).
Move it by say a fortnight, then a few days later ring or go online (as the move often updates your online booking too) and cancel it well within your allowed period.
    Happy days.
This all assumes you can move the date without penalty of course which is why ringing the hotel is better since they're normally more flexible than a booking system.

It makes my blood boil that councils spend our money on road dressing that can literally kill us. In the age of the health & safety nanny state too. Loving this series, as always. The dronage is definitely worth the effort and getting better as you go. Thanks.

It's very wasteful of grit too.. Apparently roads do need the occasional layer of grit between other layers

Understand how you complain about the loose chippings on the road.! But did I here you say it says 10 mph. But I'm doing about 30! Nearly lost it there. This stuff is super slippery. Slow down then.

Another beauty :) The chipping thing is called 'road dressing', they do it a lot down here in Cornwall. They smear some tar on the old road surface and then spread all that loose stuff on top so's the vehicles press the gravel into the tar, it's a cheap way of staving off spending any money on resurfacing. It's godam lethal for bikers and I h8 it. They also don't raise the manholes so after 4 or 5 road dressings they, in effect make the manholes potholes, jack-asses!

The midges aren't the only things that bite in the Western Isles ......... hotels, BnBs and psycho truck drivers.
You should have tried the YHA at Broadford on Skye. Lots of similar accommodation there.
I hope you are going to take us up to the Quiraing, past the Old Man of Storr, up to the Trotternish ridge and up over the mountain road from Staffin across to Uig. I camped on the beach near Staffin, midge free. The road up from Portree is fabulous. I told you about this a couple of years back. I had the pleasure of cycling it although the midges weren't a pleasure. Got eaten alive back in Broadford when I stupidly camped at a rip off campsite as I couldn't find anywhere to wild camp. Scenery was stunning especially the Trotternish ridge. Would love to go back walking in the Cuillins but only dressed in a suit of armour or full motorbike gear to protect from the wee beasties. Btw it's only the female that bites. One female midge can bite up to 4,000 times an hour. I got mullered when I was there. Had to raise the white flag in defeat and retreat.
Your drone footage is good. You should do more of it. You have a head start as you have a pilot's license. I hope you properly carry out all your pre-flight checks. You need to go higher though.

Another cracking episode. As a new GS owner today, I had a great first day on her, then settled down this evening with a whiskey to watch episode 3. Doesn't get much better than that. Totally understand why you like to tour solo. If you ever do some group tours, would be great to follow at whatever pace you chose with as many photo and drone stops as needed.

Awesome! Love touring Scotland, it helps that I live outside Edinburgh. I did the Outer Hebrides this year. Oban > Barra > South Usit > North Uist > Lewis & Harris and then NC500 west to east. Awesome trip. Can't beat Scotland for scenery, quiet roads and grippy tarmac. If you do the Outer Hebrides you need to book it in January, we tried 3 years in a row to get booking but left it to late, eventually we did it 6 months ahead which worked out.
Just be careful of spray and chip resurfacing, the idiotic councils are trying to save money but putting out lives at risk.

Heart in my mouth on the gravel! I was up touring Scotland a couple of weeks ago and came across a few spots where they had done the same, thick loose gravel over the whole road, don't know how it can be safe in the height of tourist season. Felt a little two wheel slide as I had to lean over coming down a hill, scared the shit out of me! The car following way too close behind me backed right off afterwards though!

Was 'T' boned by a car 20 years ago and broke my leg badly. By the way what's this about travelling alone, sure I've seen a young blond on your pillion, the real reason why you retire early methinks. Now that would be a good reason to pull on mi leathers again. Keep up the goog work.

The gravel roads are the same as in Norway.; there are lots of them. In a car you can do about 80 km to keep it safely 😬

Sunrise here in Edinburgh today was 04:26, with Sunset at 22:03. The Northern horizon will still be light after midnight tonight. In Arisaig it's 04:29 and 22:21. Of course, by the time you get to the Winter solstice, it's six and a half hours between sunrise and sunset. Oh well.
If you're ever planning another trip to Scotland, you should consider the A708 between Selkirk, in the Scottish Borders, and Moffat, in Dumfries & Galloway. Many consider it THE best biking road in the UK. Check it out on Google street view. In fact, Scotland is fortunate in that there are great biking roads everywhere. You could basically plonk yourself down anywhere in the country, outside of the towns, point yourself in any direction, and you'll be unlucky if you don't find yourself having great fun on whatever roads you find yourself on.
I personally like single track roads. Probably because of where they take you. Also, on a bike, pretty much everyone makes way for you. Even when they're in front of you. It would be different in a car, I suppose.
Anyway, really enjoying the series. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it.

Shame about the hotels, when I go up I plan on camping ( not a real fan of camping) and then it's bonus if ya can get a room or even a pod. Cheapest pod I got was £20 And it was just as good as a room.

TheMissendenFlyer given that this was a while ago, since you've mentioned you've a while since finished this tour you can't involve the police. Normally though you can submit video evidence to plod, but you need to do it as soon as possible after the incident.

Just a suggestion about your shoulder issues. You could try bar risers. Lift up and back slightly, you will be surprised the difference it can make. Your shoulders are more relaxed and can last longer days in the saddle.

Great series TMF. Wow that was a close call with the truck - felt my butt clench just watching it! Toured the highlands and Isles for the last 3 years and never tire of it. Can be a logistical nightmare trying to get ferries and accommodation to line up as you have found, so I now take a more flexible approach to the itinerary and book hotels where I can and ad lib where I can’t with the insurance policy of a tent for when the prices get silly or no rooms available, although now I’ve turned 50 the old bones object a little more to the canvas option. Keep up the good work.

Trust this vid can be a warning to all visitors who have not seen this type of road dressing which is common in rural Scotland. It's truly "orrid" to ride on and deserves the greatest respect regardless of the bike you are on. Great video as usual Mr Flyer

Wonderful ride and commentary ! Here in New Mexico, on the twisty back roads with many hairpin turns, it's the pickup trucks with trailers with a tire over the line..... I really felt your tension with that stupid lorry driver! All in all the ride reminds me of the roads in NZ. Thanks for all your effort to bring us a bit of adventure. Regards , Eric

Wonderful stuff. One of my favourite parts of the world. I've spent many wonderful days in and around Arisaig and Morar over the years, it really is very special and if the weather is right there is no better place to be. Shame about the prat in the truck.
Would you ever consider camping? You'd save yourself a fortune. With good quality modern camping kit you'd don''t need to be uncomfortable either. I've just spent the weekend in Snowdonia, cracking riding and only spent £16.00 on two nights accommodation on really good quality campsite. Wild camping in the highlands is free.

loving this series, well done TMF. As a kid our family holidays were spent driving around there towing a caravan. Would love to go back and do it on a bike. Thank you for the inspiration. I live in New Zealand now, perfect motorcycling country. We have public roads here which are always gravel, no tarmac ever. Road trips always mean gravel at some point. Its impressive seeing riders on completely unsuitable bikes negotiate those roads. Stand up, puts your weight down low. Also its easier to balance on your feet than on your bum :-)

Here in ni they call that "screen" they put down a layer of tar then a layer of chips. Then the traffic beds its down. but it's a bloody death trap for bikes and chips the hell out of your car. I'd report that tool in the lorry you've got his reg. Nice scenery btw

screed, not screen I've heard it called! but a better name would be SCREAM as I'm sure some cyclists, motorcyclists and even car drivers do just as they bin it into a field or rock face somewhere! especially meeting a loony lethal lorryist like him! if it was the USA the councils would be inundated with lawsuits for property damage, broken bones and perhaps even lost lives!
