I just got a 2009 nissan Murano, how bad of a purchase did I just do?
Scotty every car dealership i go to has broken barely running cars in every lot.
I keep buying cars that break and I belive milage don't matter anymore.
Is it cheaper to buy buy a motor and transmsion and put it in any worn out car of my choice
How about early 2000's pathfinder's
I had basically this exact Xterra, and got it for like $750, in really good clean shape!
It needed a few little things, but I decided to go through it from top to bottom (timing belt and water pump, along with a few other things) and after driving it God only knows how many miles I sold it for like $4200!!
I regret selling it cause it was by far one of the best vehicles I've had in years!! I'm definitely looking forward to finding another good, clean 4x4 that gets somewhat good gas mileage, because it is Soo much better than having a payment AND spending 5 times the money!
@@me-th9hf same thing bro shoot for a manual one tho
Yeah. I got a 2003 Xterra for my Son's first car in 2020 for $2500. It had 110,000 miles on it. Needed a heater core. Fixed that, rear springs and a bunch of other minor issues, I probably had about $5,000 all in to make that thing run for at least another 100k miles. And loved it because it has that cool factor look to it.
6 months later, he destroyed it driving stupid up and embankment and launched it off the side of a 4 foot concrete barrier.
I was pissed as all hell!!! But, in the end, it was a great little truck to crash like that. He would be dead if I bought him a Civic. That Xterra kept him safe with just seat belt rash.
damn thats sad. At least it wasn't a brand new car that he destroyed. All of us teenagers have damaged our cars in one way or another. Driving is a learning experience, I guess.
Aaand they’re all taken
Are you interested in one? But you gotta shoulder the shipping fee
Lol
There are still a few if you pick through enough piles lol
Nope their still plenty around…their just 8500 now
The dude is being sarcastic basically saying soon as Scotty said pick one up they are all gone… thought it was hilarious. Good call bro
Rust converter chemically changes rust (iron oxide) to iron tannate or iron pyrite, which are inert and stop any oxidation process. One brand I use is call ospho, just brush it on, let it soak in, and it converts in a few hours and turns dark. After that you are done, you can even paint it if you like.
POR 15
Ospho Fan for decades here! Bought a gallon & have shared with several friends & neighbors and still have over half a gallon.
In fact doing a couple rust spots on my Tundra. Q-Tip over rawetal and it seals and inhibits for a long time.
Also creates an initial primer coat. Just light sand, spray actual primer lightly sand & paint for an amazing bond.
Available at most paint stores.
POOR-15. Sucks.
I used Rustoleum Rust Reformer on my '98 Silverado Z71, looks good and works great! It isn't a rubberized formula that traps rust inside
Don’t need to sandblast the frame. Knock off excessive scale with a wire brush and paint it with POR15. It doesn’t have a solvent to evaporate and leave pinholes in the finish. When it dries, it seals it up like epoxy. VERY CHEAP FIX. That’s a classic car restoration trick for some applications.
Not a bad idea, if you have the lift and the time.
What is pro15?? We're do u get it????thaxs for info
If you really know Scotty, then you would know that he wants everything done to Perfection!
😂
POR 15 Is the best stuff I have ever come across one thing is if it's in the sun UV light definitely paint over it but 10 years ago I put it on rust on my car and it's still solid
I used Por-15 on my 52 Plymouth 18 years ago and never have had any rust reoccur.
I bought a 2001 Xterra about two years ago for $2850. 5 speed manual with the manual 4x4 transfer case. The thing is amazing. At this point, it has 277k miles on it and it runs great!
Wow that's super cool 🕺🏽
@@superdude7459 yes, I is
Same I got 4wd with the locking hubs 5 speed manual v6 02 Xterra se 242k on it runs like a dream
i got one for 2500 its not 4x4 as i live in the city and its less weight and it will never see any off roading realistically. it at 287k miles still strong
My 2006 Xterra has 305k on it. I’m the original owner. Loved in PA for 4 years with it, then TX for 9, and it’s been in CO since 2018. Great as a daily, for long rides and off-roading. Original engine and transmission.
DAMN mine got 36k original miles for 04
Too freaking hilarious! Brilliant mechanic with stellar humor! Love it, as usual, Scotty!
❤❤❤🎉!
Now we have a used 2007 Nissan Versa with the 4 speed Jaco automatic, it just turned over to 180,000 miles. We bought it a year ago for $1,800. I changed all motor/trans mounts, all coil packs & plugs, MAS, both O2 sensors, all 4 wheels got new rotors, drums a pads/shoes, changed the oil/filter as well the trans fluid/trans filter, new coolant and installed a trailer hitch for our 5 X 8 utility trailer. Being a California since brand new the car there is zero rust and underneath the Nissan looks like new. The white body is OK, a little rough, no dents, interior fair after using "Ez Off over cleaner" on the grease and oil stained seats. That Ez Off really works good with a stiff brush some water and a lot of elbow grease! We are now getting 30 to 35 MPG and this little Versa pulls our trailer with the Harley Davidson Fatboy just fine.
Hi Scotty!; That's why I still keep my (Late, MD as myself) Dad's Nissan Patrol / K160 / 1.984. Had it restored roughly 9 yrs ago. Still going strong!!.
Scotty, I have an Xterra with 360K + miles. Having worked in the plant a number of years ago, they paid attention to the rust prevention. I have a 4WD.
I am in Tennessee and it is great to see someone telling us the real story about the auto industry.
Can it withstand the brine solution and calcium chloride with salt solution used on roads in some salt state cities?
What year is your xterra?
I was looking at one of these
Yes…what year?!…
@@michaelmontemayor6434 Mine is a 2007.
Xterras are solid vehicles. My in-laws owned an 04 for 10 years and it was super reliable. It got terrible gas mileage (my Ram Pentastar is thriftier) and the engine's got a timing belt but make sure to replace that one every 60K-75K miles and you're good for 300K miles.
PS. make sure it stays away from moisture, ours developed rust where the rack rails attached to the roof and on top of the windshield seal. We're talking about a CA vehicle.
I love listening to Scotty!
I'm a Health and Fitness Professional (wannabe car guy) and really enjoy his knowledge, delivery, approach, and hilarious sense of humor!
My mom had an Xterra growing up. We loved it, it was so unique at the time. She got so many compliments on it.
My daughter purchased a 2005 Toyota 4Runner 2 yrs ago with 205k for $6,000. She absolutely loves driving her 4Runner in the Colorado weather. It’s been the oldest, but most reliable car she’s ever owned. I bet when it finally dies out she’ll buy herself a newer one!
Yes if you google “most reliable SUVs” the 4Runner is on the top 5! Great car!!!
Scotty I don't know much about cars, so the only car I can afford is always old, so I need info to keep my car running for as long as possible. I mentioned you to my mechanic who I the best I've ever have. He has almost as many years experience as you do. He to follows you. So you have the ultimate reputation and thanx 4 being so smart and giving of your time and knowledge!!
We have a black Nissan Xterra Pro 4x which we bought in January 2018. It's almost paid for, and my husband loves it. We get questions on how the off road lights work on top and the little storage area for wet things. All the little secret compartments. There's one in the back seat on the passenger side seat. The hidden areas for tools etc. It's a very well though out vehicle.
I got a 91 Pathfinder. It has 212000 on it and has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned... Best snow and ice SUV ever built.
Thanks for all the fun and advice Scotty.
I bought a 2003 2wd Frontier XE Crew cab, same engine as this Xterra. I put in a timing belt kit w/water pump and seals also changed valve cover gaskets and full tune-up.The truck runs great with 160000 mi on it.
I got a 2006 gmc canyon 4x4 crew cab with an inline 5 cylinder. It still runs great at 172000 miles
I looked at a couple of these two years ago for my son. They were selling for $5-$7k then and that was in TN. Used car prices are even more ridiculous now especially for younger people who can't pay cash and either can't get a loan or they get a loan and pay way too much interest.
Always great to learn new stuff especially suvs.. Nice banner
I currently own a 2005 Xterra. My dude I love that thing. 153k miles and hasn't given me trouble. I got it for 2.5k 😆
The cam sensor is in the distributor on that one and those are known for distributors taking a dump. Try to get an OE Nissan if it's still available. If not, you'll have to try two or three aftermarket ones before finding one that works. And replace the knock sensor. And I would do the O2 sensor since it's an upstream one and can make a difference in fuel trims if the heater isn't working.
I was watching this video and then my neighbor came and we watched it together. He said that this video changed his life and touched his heart. I then went and rented a projector in a big field and my entire town watched it and it changed their lives too. We all are so grateful.
Thank You for this video….
lol
😥😢😭🤣
That was fast!
😂
And the whole town closed down the bars and casinos and the next Sunday the churches were full. People kneeling before the altars and seeing visions from the book of the Apocalypse. Speaking in tongues and jumping over the pews.🙏😇
Scotty. Awesome video. More xterra content asap
Got myself a '03 Xterra over the holidays down in FL. Like New condition and was Carfax 1-Owner, SE trim with most of the options selected (only options missing were traction control and the supercharger).
Cost me $10k BUT it only had 55k miles and the condition was honestly great. She is only RWD but where I lose in traction benefits I win significantly in long term reliability and even then the traction has been great. During the last two snow falls here in the Midwest were my job sent me, she has had absolutely no problem driving through any of it, and on highway tires, just smart throttle control and the massive benefit that the SE trim of this year had the mechanical LSD which in the snow/slush has done wonders. These older Nissans are just fantastic tough trucks/SUVs.
I have a mint low mileage yellow 2000 Xterra SE 4x4 and absolutely love it, very reliable and fun to drive does great in the snow and some back roads. Will be keeping this gem !
04 xterra owner with 180k. Love these beasts. Engine is a workhorse. Replaced sagging roof-liner a while back. A/C compressor, timing belt, distributor, spark plug cables, the usual stuff. So much room the engine bay is a dream to work on. 🤙
So much room apart from that cylinder 6 plug and the water hoses jammed between the manifold and firewall 😂.
It’s tight in there lol
Mine is a 2002 manuel transmission with about 213k miles 2WD. I bought it about 10 years ago with about 100K and the only major repairs done were tune up parts, timing belt at around 190K, and the radio. Other than that, a pretty reliable vehicle!
Mines 02 manual 4wd with 242k amazing vehicle for sure
Manuel is a cool dude
Loved my 2000 manual 4WD, wish I still had it
Is the xe rear wheel drive?
I had a 2000 nissan xterra. Love the sound of that 3.3! A mini tank in my opinion. Make sure to replace that radiator or your transmission will go out! That is how my xterra died rest it's soul. Wish I had another one! So good for trail riding. They fit on 4 wheeler trails lol
In case that generation suffers from it, reroute the transmission cooling lines to a separate transmission cooler & do not use the set-up the runs through the radiator.
Coolant is known to leak into the transmission fluid & will thrash the transmission.
Wish I knew someone like Scott to help me get a car n to make the best the decision with my money, I’m gonna watch a lot of his vids
The cam code is most likely the bearing in the distributor. Those 3.3 distributors are very similar to the GM optispark with the little flat plate as the tone wheel.
Scotty u r a charector ! Keep the vids coming👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have a 02 Xterra with 417,000 miles , still running great
@1:41 I love the idea of putting the rack on the back! You're right Scotty, they will think TWICE about tailgating! 🤣
For emissions testing here in GA, you don’t need to worry about the Gas Cap Light being on. I know this, because my vehicle passed emissions with that light on. It’s the check engine light that will cause your vehicle to fail. As long as your vehicle has the gas cap (if equipped), they don’t care about that light as long as there are no check engine light trouble codes, even cleared ones. They just assume you haven’t gotten it reset yet.
appreciate your audience for supporting i will share with you some financial insight.Get to me with the number above...
I lucked out and got a 94’ Land Cruiser for 2000…
300k miles and run like the day it was built. I love it..
I sand blasted some of the frame on my car this year, and bought this paint called Rust Grip. It's a marine coating used on barges, off shore oil rigs, bridges, etc. It's a urethane based aluminum flake chemistry that cures with moisture in the air. It passed the Army corp of engineers 15,000 hr salt spray test. I'm hoping that it works because I hate having my vehicles get eat with PA road salt and gravel. I will be posting a video of it once spring comes so I can how well it holds up.
Look good!
This is what I refer to as a "Granny Car". I always look for these cars when I need one. They're the best values and perfect for 4 or 5 years if well maintained. Then, when it comes time to sell it, you get a comparatively good return on your purchase. And if you wreck it, the loss isn't that great. 👍
Inflation around the world is high .Turkey is sitting at 85.51%at the moment .
Yeah America has been ruining everything for a lot of people for almost 100 years, right after the British empire went into the backstage, seems to me America never got their independence!
Scotty must be following me around. They are out there if you can read the shop manual, turn a wrench and know what to look for (and stay away from). I am finishing up on a $2,000 2005 Ford Escape 3.0 AWD 4X4. 190,000 miles but amazing newish looking inside & out. Endoscope shows all engine internals look very good. The cylinder walls even still have original cross hatched honing polishing marks (man they are making some good engines these days - if the owner changes oil regularly). Runs great, no codes, but it had a vibration on the road. Common issue with Escape/ Mazda Tributes of those years. So new motor mounts all around, new A/C parts all around, fuel injectors pulled, cleaned and new filter baskets installed, new top line spark pugs, 4 brand name all terrain tires, all fluids including brake system changed. Cooling system cleaned, flushed, new coolant, all air and fuel filters and some minor parts store replacement stuff. And a 4 hour detail buff & polish. In the end I have a good looking good running all season 200hp 4x4 SUV and have far less than $5,000 total into it.
The old pathfinder was bulletproof too
Head gasket just blew on mine… 2000 Xterra with 130k miles. In rainy Oregon having to walk everywhere now lol will not lose hope though!
Makes my life feel accomplished when I noticed that Scotty using the Xtool scanner. The same one I decided to buy🙂they work great
Which one is it?
I helped my lady friend find one. She loves it! Makes me wish I bought a frontier to match.
I call the cattle blocker a deer guard. Comes in handy.
Mine has 312K on it.
I use a stapler once in a while to fasten the falling headcloth
Haha, awesome!
Are you Super Duper Stickum Tape to keep my headliner up.
Once again, Scotty proved he is the Best on the Web.👍
Scotty love your channel. Awesome to see that you are in the land of the 🦅. I was there from 11 to 13. One of my favorite duty stations
My dad bought one a year before I was born. Was our family car for 15 years. I miss that car wish he never got rid of it
I have an 2004 Xterra and owned it for 19 yrs it's been a good reliable truck I did timing belt maintenance 3 yrs ago and it's always got me home the ac still works it is leaking s little oil now and will fix that when I can but I will keep this for a few more years it has 146,000 miles on it
I personally would LOVE to be able to buy a "cow plow" on the front end of my '05 GTO. It would look tough as well as make me less fearful of a deer-ful woods on the roads around my area. I saw a cage much like that one on a Jeep Wrangler once.. but only once back when I owned one. I didn't buy it then because I never heard of any positive OR negative opinions.
Yeah, I live in Rust Island. Between six months of salt and twelve months of potholes, cars do not last much past 10 years here. And they are gestapo-like about inspections and emissions. The RI DMV will suspend your registration in the system automatically if your inspection is past due (every 2 years). Cops have plate readers in their cars to snag the past due cars. Get that sensor done. Sucks here. I'm coming to Tennessee, I swear.
Hope you're having a great day Scotty!
Bought an 04 4wd last year off of the side of the road. 170,000 miles with timing belt change etched into the frame at 120,000 miles. Small leak on transmission coolant. Fixed with a $15 hose. Been perfect other than the service engine on and off dependent to where I buy gas. Roof liner is sagging too. 😂 And I paid $3,500. Most fun I could expect running through the orange groves down here in FL
great as always, love learning new things... LGB
“Rustbucketarama” priceless….🎯
I have a 2004 Xterra, and my biggest recurring issue, and an issue that happens to a few (but not all) xterras is the rear sway bar occasionally swinging wide and clipping your rear break line. Yeah, no joke, had my rear break line cut six times since I bought it. No recall or anything. Finally the state I lived removed the necessity of a sway bar from the safety inspection and I pulled that thing out as fast as I could. Now I love my car. 240,000 miles and still counting.
The 4x4's dont even have a rear sway bar. Its not needed 👍
I have a Nissan Pathfinder 1999 with 325000 miles and you cant hear the engine when it on its so quiet. I can tell it was abused like hell too and still going, I paid $700 for it.
I traded my 2000 Nissan Xterra last year. Had 254,000 miles on it. Loved that car!
I briefly owned a 2012 and regret selling it. Im aiming to pick up a second gen Xterra before Christmas and sell my Jetta wagon. The X is such a solid ride over the crappy roads of northeast Ohio / lake effect snow. Love the drive train and it handles much better than expected .

Scotty, you never mention undercoatings we can apply to vehicles like NH oil, woolwax or fluid film. What are your thoughts on them?
I'm by the ocean and they use salt on the roads too. I use fluid film and have no rust at all.
Gas prices were $1.72 a gallon in the year of 2001.. I made $15.58 an hour. I worked 40 hours a week. I was a Union grocery checker. I did not pay a dime for my medical benefits for me or my dependents.

what enthusiasm! I don't even like cars but I enjoy it!
I owned four Datsuns/Nissans in a row back in the day, I liked them. Everybody in the family owned the old Datsun mini trucks at one time or another. My last Nissan was a 1990 Axxess minivan. Same drivetrain as the 240SX, 5 speed manual, it ran like a scalded ape for what it was. Oddball little thing but I loved that car. First minivan to have sliding doors on both sides too, IIRC.
I remember it. It looked quite nice back then . 1990 was a good year for nissan with many new models that were class leaders .

Bambi bar helps, always more in the front is better. Because behind most plastic bumpers there is only a thin metal pretend bumper that doesn't extend in front of tires. 😆😄😆

All these modern complications are making a refurbished 60s car or truck look sweet!
Just bought an '07 in great shape with low miles. My 3rd & nicest lookin Xterra so far! Skrrrrrrrrrt!
This is my grandpas personal car🔥
Tell him I approve of His Message even from Central Wisconsin 👍🤣.
I have a 2001 Nissan xterra exactly like this. 152K miles. Runs fine.
POR15 works by painting it over rust and it converts to a primer and the paint cures thus no sandblast required.
In all reality all you really need to do is get Rust-Oleum black spray paint and apply it to the rust surface areas and what you can also do is take a dual action sander with a 720 grit on the more rusted areas sand it down and apply black Rust-Oleum spray paint that is Rust resistant but in all reality any black spray paint will prevent rust.
But, a rust resistant spray paint is going to work better than just regular spray paint
I was hoping to see a before and after with all the repairs
Nice sticker over the windshield. That $3500 used car will be $4000 soon. Looking for the sweet spot between age and ease of workability. Surprised the x terra stayed with mechanical ignition on 03, the pathfinders had gone electronic by then with 6 separate coil packs.
CZcamss has vids on how to shut off "service lights" on dash. The Fiesta is, turn key on, press gas and brake for 30 seconds, until light shuts off, and viola! its gone. its just an oil change reminder.
cool scotty! ☺
very good trucks for the money. o2 sensor problems are very normal with these
Just bypass the transcooler common issues the radiators Crack and coolant go's in the trans runs the valve body easy fast or just loop the lines if not towing
In Alberta they call those bumpers a damage multiplier. It folds back and hits hood and both fenders. Strictly ornamental, powder coated shower curtain pipe! That thing wouldn’t stop a beer can;). Shipping weight 14 lbs. A real bumper is over 10 times that weight.
Hey Scotty! You were talking about sand blasting the frame underneath the vehicle, I was wondering instead of sand blasting, how about dry ice blasting?

I had a dream I was driving a 2008 Xterra and got a flat tire while on a fender bender but my car was perfectly fine. It was the other driver’s car that had the damage. Now I’m seeing them everywhere lol
I nearly 💩 at the "timing belt" .
But I too like to use my money for things besides payments for depreciating unreliable vehicles, and that's why I STILL drive a 07 crown vic.

Our police department still has several Crown Vics. They outlast the new Explorer patrol cars.
