What Happened To British Pop Duo Mel & Kim?

  • Born to a Black Jamaican father and a White British mother in Hackney, East London, sisters Melanie and Kimberly Appleby didn’t have the easiest start in life. After their parent’s divorce, the girl’s mother was left to raise them on her own. Money was so tight that, for a time, they even lived in a hostel. Music was always present in their home and they regularly fantasized about becoming popstars.

I used to manufacture clothes in Hackney East London and on occasion Kim worked for me doing some overlocking just as the girls music career was starting. I got to know both Kim and Mel and yes, they really were lovely girls in real life and deserved the recognition for their talents. Kim, if you see this comment it’s Steve and I used to be a business partner with Andy and we both had German Shepherd dogs, mine was Max and Andy’s was Kelly.

Quite often we will play their songs, especially FLM, in their honour. When post-covid travel opens up more easily, anyone reading this, you are welcome to come visit us here in HK and you can find me there on the decks. A lot of celebs are complicit in this and choose to act up in public knowing that a camera is on them.
Whilst what the press do isn't always right a lot of people that complain about them are the same ones that complain about the demise of brick and mortar stores yet go out and buy their goods on Amazon.

I remember seeing them perform their first single at a nightclub in Croydon before they had hit the charts and had no idea who they were until they were on tv. Such a shame that Mel went so young, but at least Kim has been keeping her memory alive with their music. I still enjoy listening to it even today. Great memories.
