You can try Plop Boot Manager on a cd and see if this bootloader can help boot from usb. This bootloader btw can make any pc boot from unsupported boot media
Sadly no, plob boot even for cd boot uses the floppy disk image. And that's where ISOBOOT comes in, it is used to boot floppy images from a cd. However ISOBOOT itself hangs.
I can boot from usb, it's not very reliable. And if the bootloader uses grub or isoboot it hangs. So it's impossible to boot anything useful from a usb, not that isb boot doesn't work.

How does the keyboard work, there is no PS2 port, so how come a USB drive can't be used? (from DOS - that would be your permanent storage option)
