  • In this video, which is part II in my journey of testing preamp tubes in position V1 for my Tweed Deluxe 5E3 tube amp, I test different brands of ECC81/12AT7 preamp tubes. I'll be focusing on how they affect the amp's tone break-up, headroom, and harmonic richness. My goal is to find the tube that best matches my taste and makes my amp sing.

Well, damn. I always thought a Tweed Deluxe was just not to my tastes. Here, with the Strat, though, you're killing me.
That tone is delicious. The playing-i envy that far more.

The opening and closing playing was superb! Fabulous tone and feel and it was classic Les Paul...cleaner neck pickup and then tone for days on the bridge pickup. That guitar is so good! I would have genuinely have chosen the Brimar as it had a little sparkle to it and the Mullard was a little bassy. Didn't like the Valvo! These little tone increments are subtle but so make the journey enjoyable. Love your content Thor.
    C'mon guys...let's get Thor to 3k subscribers!

Hi Brian, you sum up quite well what I took away from playing these tubes. Pleased to learn that you managed to get that from my audio recordings. And regarding the Les Paul, yes I absolute agree it's a great guitar, and I managed to matte down the shiny chrome pickup covers and I also did sand back the finish on the neck. Small details here and there that to me makes the guitar even more to my preference and taste. Thanks for your continuous support and your comments to my videos Brian. I am going on a weeks vacation to Greece soon, and will bring your book along to finish reading the last chapters. Been listening to the audiobook Black Elk Speaks when in my car. I seems good to have that with me when reading your book. I'm grateful that you shared your book with me. It resonates well with me. Cheers!

@@GUITARSGIZMOS We are on the same wavelength Thor so it is easy for us to appreciate what the other brings. I listen to YT thru a really good hi-fi and despite YT's compression your sound comes across as "alive" and it's very easy to feel I am sat in the same room! Appreciate your kind words about my book as I know it's not for everyone.

Hi Robert, thank you😊 I hope you are doing fine and get to play your guitars pretty loud every now and then. Cheers!

I heard them very much as you did - if any were distinctive in any way, it was Phillips (a little clearer and brighter), Mullard (more midrange) and Brimar (surprisingly round and a little bit dark and syrupy, “brown”).
I am a strat + tweed deluxe fan and think your playing and tone are wonderful.
What mic? What were your amp settings? Have you always picked with your fingers?

Thank you for your kind words on my playing, and it is good to hear that my choice of tube aligns with what you heard as well 😊I'm not sure if you mean the mic for recording or the pickups. I used a Shure SM57 and a Shure SM7B for recording. The pickups in my Fraser S-style are Evil Sheep '63/Formvar. I plugged into the bright channels low input of the amp and the volume is barely touching 3. Tone between 6 and 7. I did however use the Sweet Honey Overdrive with a low gain setting when you hear the amp distorting a bit. Regarding my playing style, it is how I learned to play the guitar as a kid, so it falls naturally for me to play with my fingers more than using a pick. Cheers!

Would you be so kind to share how did you record your 5e3?

Hi, I used two mics pointing a bit offset on the speaker baffle. A Shure SM57 and a Shure SM7B which I then blend in my DAW (Logic Pro). Cheers!
