I'm one of Pete's "Tubers". I just de-commissioned my 12KWh 18650 battery a couple of months ago (still working). I got tired of chasing heater cells every few months and was starting to worry about fire. Replaced it with 3 EG4 LiFePO4's and all was fine until last week when my 3 year old MPP LV5048 died suddenly and unexpectedly. A lot has changed in the off-grid solar space, so researching a replacement and considering some changes. Thanks Pete for getting me started and welcome back!
Liked, just for the car! Haha. I completely agree with "I'll never, ever do this again". It's incredible how much things have changed in the past several years. LFP is the way now!

Like for the minis, you did inspire me to think about batteries 2 years ago, Im still thinking. Put solar on my house here in the UK 10 years ago, was quoted £8,500 then a special offer at Christmas came through the door some company £2,750! I went for it, Id specified Hitachi Black panels cause they looked good not thinking it was on the back of the house no one sees it, but by accident they are 5% more efficient than the cooking ones. Here in the uk were restricted to 3.8kW max so my South facing 12 panels gives 4kW max. Imagine my surprise when I get a cheque for £1,000 every year back from my energy supplier on top of next to no bills, clearly Im a nube. I get an electric car plug that in and draw down 5A into that a day (25 mile) and get converted to EVs big time so get an electric bike (Zero SRF) that gets 80 miles in a day when im in the car. Ride the bike when the car wants charging, drive the car when the bike needs some electrons. All in all by accident this whole solar battery EV thing has worked out brilliant for me and thats in the overcast North West of England. I renovated bikes, say renovated, cant say my hearts in it now, if its not electric power Im not interested. I wont beat the Zero for sure but fancy an electric Lotus 7.....hmmm thats a plan.
@@HBPowerwall Im a nube I never even worked it out I know my electrics but no idea on the commercial bolloc*s. They give you back £0.04 for 50% of every kW you produce regardless of weather you use it or not...so I make sure I use it, sit a 85kWh battery on charge and yep you will use it. Should get a Zappy EV point and optimise all this EV charging but cant be ars*d! It all seems to work as is. KISS Keep It Simple Stupid as they say.
I built my first powerwall because of your video. I still have my 18650 cells powerwall but now I am using Lifepo4 280ah cell for my primary powerwall.
Nice work! I've always planed to move to LifePo's but these bloody things take less effort, time and money than upgrading so till then i'll just keep using them.
Great update. I Thought it was impossible when you started to use old computer cells. However after you ranked them burnt them in and used the battery cases with the curly nickle "fuse" I thought maybe building cells for an off grid cabin was possible. At one time CZcams allowed making folders so I archived all your videos for future reference however that account was lost. Worse, once you lose favorites similar to cellphone contacts, it takes a long time rebuilding the knowledge base. At one time you referred to a company that sold used batteries, I cant remember who it was. Anyway, they say success breeds contempt because the process becomes boring, but so few have accomplished as much. Your battery content fills a niche and hopefully will make a few extra bucks in the process. I work on everything as well and fixing things is our future as the economy becomes challenging, so the new content is great! BTW I would of lost this site if you changed it's name -- Again thanks for the years of content, looking forward to the off grid battery content! Cheers!

Nice to hear from you / see the update :). You + DIY Tech & Repairs + AverageJoe were major inspirations to follow in you're footsteps. I remember when you first powered serious appliances off 2nd hand 18650 in your kitchen - was an exciting youtube. My 2nd hand 18650 powerwall w/WatchMon4 + Longmons is 4.5yrs and have clocked 1,600 cycles on the oldest battery and the powerwall seems rock solid. One of my AIMS went wacky at 4yrs but Batrium and Midnite Classics are moving ahead with no sign of trouble.
It is great that your batteries are doing so well. I would love to watch some Mini content. I did a bunch of work on a 1963 Mini woody wagon years ago.

Yeh, still getting on with it..i'm also impressed they are still running so well - would do a load test if to see what is actually left in them but it's soooo much time and effort not sure its worth it

Good to see it's all working. If the droppings are the only issue, you have got off lightly. Darling little rodents. Love the Mini, all types of engineering are interesting, so what ever your doing looks a lot of fun.
Yeh better than the last issue I found with the mice eating a balance lead behind the wall of my shed powerwall, took 2 hours to find and fix the fault.

Not going to lie...I figured you would have moved on to prismatic LFP cells years ago, relegating the 18650's and 21700's to the smaller tasks for which they are well-suited. It's interesting to see all of this stuff still functioning, but it's also crazy that you're still using these types of solutions.
Awesome to see you up again and great to see the PIPs working so well gives me hope - mine sat for 3 yrs and is now up as a UPS more than anything. Andy's Offgrid Garage should give you hope doing more on this he even had professionals go over it and replaced dodgy old panels. I thought my PIP 5048MS had died the other day but turned out one of those arlec grid connect I use just for remote power monitoring decided to become a PWM power device luckily the warranty had a day to go but read about them on Bunnings an the reviews are shocking (pardon the pun). I use them to try drive solar consumption during the day though need something smarter as they just turn on around 10am and off at 3pm and no consideration for cloudy days. Does your system feed critical loads or something? With excess power during the day and lot of my grid tie being export limited its trying to find useful things to burn the power on as ROI of the grid tie creeps out when not used. Also how the bees going?
On my batteries here it's the plumbers solder I used because it was cheap and didn't know any better, on the farm it's because my "Pure Nickel Strip" wasn't...
Thanks for the update Pete. I was wondering how thing had been going with your Powerwalls. With the minimal rust shown in the video, I’m assuming you don’t have to worry about humidity that much?

My (much smaller and more shoddy) system based on your work has been running for a couple of years now. Can u put a clamp meter to check the power draw of each set to see if the pack with the shorter cable is working much harder? Also be interesting to know the battery degradation after so many years
Hi mr hb powerwall iv really enjoyed watching your videos and have recently acquired like 500 20700 cells still capacity testing them at the moment. Feels like a never ending situation lol. Any quick question hopefully you see this it may get drowned in all the others comments but I live in the uk it’s quite damp most of the time and my power wall set up will be in a wooden shed no heating. I’m worried my cells may go rusty what would you recommend to try moisture protect them if even possible to to do so

stupid idea maybe, but if you need something low power and cheap enough with a browser to check batrium data you could perhaps? get a raspberry pi or something similar to that and hook your monitor, mouse etc up the that
@@HBPowerwall yea i understand, i'm not really a Linux guy either, if i can i will run Windows the rest of my life 😂 unfortunately i didn't have much choice for what i was planning to do with it, and it really is just a case of installing Raspbian on an SD card using the Raspberry Pi Imager, setting it up and opening the internet browser in that case, pretty straight forward i used it shortly for a 3D printer
Hey Pete. below are my thoughts and are not conclusive but in my experience I'm convinced. I have done the parallel packs a couple years ago. czcams.com/video/PwfnXk66o1w/video.html Keeping to Longmons on each pack despite the 3 packs are paralleled together is a good idea. My thought is example. Assume that you are paralleling to packet at different voltages, this will take time to balance. Therefor if each set are rated at different capacities then the charge and discharge will cause the packs between the sets to rise and or fall at different rates hence a possibility of an over or under voltage. This would be less prevent when a higher charge / discharge current. Lower charge / discharge current would have more time to balance. However if all packs across all sets were to same value the this wouldn't happen. But we know only in an ideal world this would ring true.

Wouldn't do it again due to safety, time and now the avilabity of new LifePo4 cells

I run 10 computers, 24 seven one more doesn’t hurt and does many different things not showing on video

unfortunately i didn't have much choice for what i was planning to do with it, and it really is just a case of installing Raspbian on an SD card using the Raspberry Pi Imager, setting it up and opening the internet browser in that case, pretty straight forward
i used it shortly for a 3D printer

below are my thoughts and are not conclusive but in my experience I'm convinced. I have done the parallel packs a couple years ago.

Keeping to Longmons on each pack despite the 3 packs are paralleled together is a good idea. My thought is example. Assume that you are paralleling to packet at different voltages, this will take time to balance. Therefor if each set are rated at different capacities then the charge and discharge will cause the packs between the sets to rise and or fall at different rates hence a possibility of an over or under voltage. This would be less prevent when a higher charge / discharge current. Lower charge / discharge current would have more time to balance. However if all packs across all sets were to same value the this wouldn't happen. But we know only in an ideal world this would ring true.
