the fact that spoiler arlert is a spoiler in itself I find hilarious
Ha, I get it. Though it's not really a spoiler, as you wouldn't understand it unless you already know. The real spoiler is this thread, as it tells readers that it was a spoiler. Not how, but it wouldn't be hard to guess. (On behalf of this thread,Sorry people not caught up.)
Finally someone who makes the „spoiler Armin alert“ joke
The reason why Attack on Titan's early art is so shobby is that Isayama himself said that when going to mangaka school he focused a lot more on taking the story and writing classes while other students tended to focus more on taking the art classes. This is why his art suffered in the early chapters, but he had already started to put a well-written story together. And it paid off- as he practiced drawing more over the years his art became really good- look at anything during and after the Marley Arc. And as the manga comes to a close, we can see that the story of Attack on Titan is way more cohesive and well written than a lot of its manga counterparts.
Yeah I'm gonna start the beginning of the next video praising his art improvement. He continues to improve even more later, but even as soon as the next arc the improvement shows.
With manga and other visual novels it's essentially 2 entirely separate skills: Drawing and writing. You always are more skilled in one than the other. Attack on Titan has those two very far apart. The art is good enough that it doesn't drag the manga down but the story is doing pretty much all the heavy lifting when it comes to sentiment and excitement.
It's worth noting that Isayama is extremely involved in the anime's production, and everything is done with his say so. He's stated that he considers the anime the 'finished' version of the manga, or the 'final version'. Season 3 in particular was changed in some bits as that's how he wanted it. That cooperation is part of the reason it has been adapted so well.
That's amazing! No, seriously! This almost guarantees we'll get a satisfying conclusion in season 4.
Complete and utter ballsht. The uprising arc was completely butchered in the anime version. Get out of here
@@awsomeboy360 It was clearly stated by Isayama in the Brutus interview (published 24th December, 2014) that he doesn’t like how he told the story of the uprising arc in the manga. He worked heavily with WIT studio during S3 to change this. Whine about it if you want, but that’s the facts. And your opinion isn’t fact either; most people obviously disagree and clearly enjoyed the way it unfolded.
@@scottfree9517 Really? And created an INFERIOR product in the anime? The Uprising Arc in the anime is an absolute joke and he only said that to appease the action-tards. Attack on Titan isn't just action, the characterization and themes are the backbone of the story. The action only complement the whole thing. In terms of action, the anime does that really well. But the compete package was massacre in Season 3.
@@awsomeboy360 You’re entitled to your opinion of Isayama’s work, even if it is a minority opinion that most don’t agree with. Stick to the manga and stay in your lane then. Nobody cares and we won’t miss you.
What's worse is that when Levi and co. return after losing the Female Titan, we meet Petra's father. Petra was the soldier in Levi's squad that Levi specifically took the patch from (he also stopped and blinked when he saw her body specifically, as opposed to passing over the bodies of the rest of his squad). When Petra's father excitedly goes to meet Levi, he's discussing how he thinks she's a bit too young to get married [to Levi] as Levi stares horrified and can't meet his gaze.
That makes the whole Patch giving thing hurt more for me.
To be honest, I kind of liked that the Manga didn't give that much special focus to Petra compared to the rest of Squad Levi. Even if most fans only really care about Petra (For obvious reasons), there's no reason for Levi to single her out over the rest of his Squad.
@@CABRALFAN27 Likewise. Like, I assume Levi had planned on giving that patch to her father, but the anime then went and gave all the other members of the squads families that weren't shown in the manga. What does that say to their families- "Fuck you, you don't deserve keepsakes of your loved ones"? And if he was going to keep it for himself... why? Because she reminds him of Isabel even though we never see him having any meaningful interaction with Petra that would lend credence to that connection? That scene felt like pure fanservice, and I don't mean that as a compliment.
@@CABRALFAN27 I don't think that's giving her special focus, before of that scene we saw all of their families, Gunther's, Oluo's and Eld's, they were all talking about how they were expecting them to come back that day and how they wanted to see them, but we don't see Petra's, bc we'll see her dad later. It makes sense to show one waiting for their kid there and being too worry to actually check, while the others are more naive and hope for a visit assuming they are coming back, it's a different type of pain and tragic moment yeah, but we see it from all of them and in the same amount.
@@Silburific Levi didn't give the patch to her father bc he gave it to another soldier. He used little time he got before of getting in the horses to get the patch, he couldn't go to each one of the bodies bc they didn't have that much time (and it is a fact that Levi keeps them for himself if it's possible, in general, not just with Petra like she's special to him or anything related to Isabel, that was shown in an official art), but when two soldiers came back for the corpse of their friend, just to lose it, get one of them killed and make the others have to drop the rest of the corpses, the one soldier that was left was destroyed and Levi knew he needed something to keep going, so he it to him saying it was his friend's, so he could feel he had something from him. That's also why he looked at Petra's corpse like that when they had to leave it behind, he got something just from her and he knew he wouldn't keep it by that moment, which means he would have nothing from them, as all their bodies would be left behind and the only thing he got from one of them is something he knows he'll need to give away. It just add another storyline that says a ton with very little. This storyline could be done with any of the members of the squad yeah, but that means it's okay that it was with Petra, it's just the same as if he would have got to Eld first. In writing terms it makes sense that Petra was chosen tho, bc Eld and Gunther don't have that much screentime and Oluo is more of a comic relief and treated like a loser that tries to copy Levi but can't so all characters ignores him, Petra is the youngest, the more likeable, the softer and the one with more scene with our main character giving her more screentime, so if you want to choose some out of the four for a painful scene, it's clear who will make the public suffer the most, at the same time that it was made sense inside the story itself and for the characters too.
I heard somewhere that when Isayama first published AoT, his bank called him because they though that he was trafficking money since so many people bought them.
Off topic but congratulations on getting married man that’s awesome!
+@@Lowart Now where is bebe?
Kidding. This is just something that happened to PewDiePie after he was married; fans starting asking, "what about your kid?"
Holy shit Annie's little speech about wanting to be seen as human changes completely with the context given in season 4. Its fantastic.
@@corn2167 Annie believes that Normal people are "worthless and evil", she has a very negative outlook on the general populace. At first she just seems like a pessimist but her past explains this point of view perfectly. She's and Eldian, her entire life she's been abused and hated by the general population. These "normal people" act against her and her kid with such hatred, simply for the conditions they were born into. She says that she just wants to be seen as human. Living a life where everyone, including your own family, says you are below that, a sub human monster, explains why she has a strong desire to just be seen as a person.
I feel like they should've kept the "See you later, Eren" vision in the anime because i think it might be relevant later on.
I’m almost confident the theory about the manga being the timeline before the anime is true, since it’s so important and Isayama chose to not include it in the anime, especially after 138 dropped
I assume they wanted to keep the idea that Eren dreamt about everything that would happen. He said he had a REALLY long dream. But I still wonder how it'll work.
Ah, having Attack on Titan be your first Anime truly is both a blessing and a curse. It's fantastic, but almost nothing else can compare to it...
I really like how rough the manga looks. When I first saw the Bigfoot titan it reminded me of one of those Bigfoot sketches and felt realistic and pretty ominous.
Yeah totally fair. I feel that way about it as it goes on. I really love how his art looks now. He did an amazing job of rising above the criticism he got early on in his career.
AoT's strongest aspect is the intelligent writing. There's no doubt about that, and that's all on Isayama. That said, I think SnK is one of the few cases where the anime is the definitive way to experience it. The whole Rod Reiss arc was mind-numbing in the manga but god damnit, I astrally project to the Andromeda galaxy whenever I watch Levi evading squad Kenny in motion.
attack on titans season 4 is better animated thatn the first 3 seasons combined eren vs warhammer titans is 10 times better than the scene you talked about
@@rillafy7966 yes xDD i just copy paste another comment

"After all, Mom's not gonna be doing so well in the next 10 minutes"
26:31 HOLY CRAP NOoooooooooooooo
4:50 The fact you synced Eren's mouth to what you're speaking makes this clip a lot better
Annie's quote about the weak being swept up in the flow still being human hits different now.
I’m not sure if anyone else noticed but in the 3rd episode of the anime after eren banged his head on the ground (from practicing the ODM gear) you can actually see smoke rising from the bandages around his head. Pretty sure that was his titan regeneration powers!
from what I understand Isayama wanted the anime to be the “definitive version” of the story and gave guidance on the story changes and reordering to the staff. He also did that a good bit of that in season 3 bc he was somewhat unhappy with his work on that arc in the manga
What Isayama said is that he uses the anime to fix his mistakes, which is why he considers that the ultimate version. But the studio also makes changes on their own, changes that sometimes Isayama can dislike, like the time he needed to ask them to take off that horrible lipstick from the female characters that they added for the first two seasons.
The uprising arc was badly received on Japan, which affected Isayama, he thought he may have been making it too long making it boring and didn't work on it as good as always, which is why he changed and cut sm in that part of season 3.
I relate to AOT getting me back into anime later in life, + I respect the use of Bakuman clips and love the edits overall. Good video, Taco man!
Thank ya! I'm happy you enjoyed it :) And I'd almost forgotten about the tacos lmao
AoT is actually what got me into anime right after I graduated high school. Was put of by it due to me parents (who watched and trusted too much Telemundo), and when a friend showed me the Boob matrix scene from Highschool of the Dead. That traumatized me. AoT hooked me with its borderline horror animation though so I gave it a shot, and now I am a weeb. Thanks AoT
I really love the subtle comedy. You don't stop to tell a joke, the joke just flies by while you keep going.
Thanks! My goal is to keep the comedy stuff non-intrusive so I'm happy to hear that's working :)
It feels weird to learn that Sasha had apparently slapped mikasa in the manga, which was promptly replied with a punch in the face...
@@realjooj1296 oh thank you, I went blind a few days ago, and when my sight returned, your comment was there.
I clearly didn’t see the first person who said that already...
The absolute development of the artwork from the early parts to where it is now is phenomenal
Attack on Titan's anime adaptation is a great example of using it's medium to enhance source material.
the fact is WIT Studio struggling to fix Isayama’s art in Manga, which is why WIT don’t has consistent character design.
There a lot of scenes from the most recent chapters of the manga that I can’t wait to see get animated
Regarding Eren's fakeout death in season 1 - anime did such a good job with atmosphere and setting that I really felt that nobody was safe here. Once Eren was swallowed by the titan I was seriously thinking on how the story would progress without him as well as considering 'Pokemon Adventures' or 'Jojo's Bizzare Adventure' type of protagonist situation, where the main character would change between certain sections of the story. It is really the only time in any media I can think of that pulled off such a feat so convincingly. Even more so, with Eren's appearance as titan and eventual confirmation that it is indeed Eren... I cried.
Most of other times it would turn into Jeremy Clarkson 'Anyway' meme :)
One thing that never bothered me that people seem to gripe about a lot are those still/unanimated shots that just sort of pan. People seem to take this as a weakness, as if because it's not animated, it indicates laziness or subpar quality of the show. Like you said in this video, they're done sparingly enough, and they're used to the best of their ability. Oftentimes they're used for small interactions/scenes that are just transitions from one bigger scene to the next. (i.e. in episode 11 when Armin and Eren say goodbye to one another before Eren is about to start to boulder mission) Or, they use these types of shots for montages while someone is doing a voice over. These still images are often extremely well-made. The art is good and detailed and adds a certain feel to the anime. It doesn't take you out of the moment of the show, especially since they're used smartly and sparingly, with other great moments of stellar animation elsewhere in the show.
should have talked about the scene where erens titan goes beserk and talks about destroying the world
I just wanna know how a small studio like Wit made this masterpiece anime. Those people have my respect.
There's a channel called 'The Canipa Effect'. He did a good video on the production of AOT.
The energy in this video is infectious. Can’t wait for more!

The spoiler Arlet is one of the best puns I've ever heard.
Puns are amazing.
so true I actually laughed at this because I never ever thought of this pun
I never realized that part with Levi giving the patch from his comrades...it really shows Levi's compassion and emotional intelligence. It makes sense seeing Levi's backstory in the OVA, but the heart on Levi is really...inspiring. Also, It's crazy how you don't fully understand Annie's philosophical ramblings until the recent episodes of the final season...
Awesome video, and can't wait to see the rest in the series! And agreed with pretty much everything you said. I may be in the minority but I hated the changes made to the final Eren vs Annie fight in the S1 finale. More specifically, the thematic changes about Eren hesitating leading to disastrous consequences are pretty good, but Eren's red glowing berserk mode and the depiction of the fight being so much more one-sided in Eren's favor felt too distant from the manga for me. Narratively, that final fight between Eren and Annie was a big deal because of how strong Annie was, and I preferred their fight to be more equally matched with Eren ultimately winning with the help of the Survey corps, rather than it being Eren going super saiyan and beating her near single handedly.
Really hope you discuss the differences between Manga Mikasa and Anime Mikasa, I think the small changes add up and really diminish her character and relationship with others besides Eren
I'm so happy you're covering Shingeki

Wasn't their an anime only rage mode that gave eren the power to beat annie when in the manga eren had to throw mikassa at her.
Assuming i remember right, I preferred the manga here. The rage mode seemed like some generic shonen anger boost and then had weird fusing that might never get explained or refrenced again because it's anime only.
Another reason for manga over anime in that particular scene was it highlighted even with eren at full power he can't do everything and needs to rely on his friends and the core in a symbiotic way where one couldn't have taken Annie down without the other.
THIS EXACTLY!
Armin comments during the fight that rage and willpower alone won't win the battle, and in the manga he's right, he has to do teamwork and learn to keep his cool. In the anime Armin is proven wrong and Eren wins because he's the angriest of the battle.
It's a shame because later on what wins Eren any battles is not anger, but strategy and teamwork.
The team of abandoning your humanity is not that literal.
I agree completely that I preferred the manga version.
However I do like the fusing part that was in the anime only as
Spoiler alert for non manga readers!!!!
It was revealed in one of the recent chapters that the female titan can absorb the powers of the other titan shifters to an extent. And the fusing was her absorbing the attack titan
@@Haxec yeah i was wondering if the was issyama making the fusing canon since he sees the anime as the definitive edition of his work. it's just other than that episode they never mentioned the fusing again or suggested what was making them fuse.
The rage mode I’m pretty sure he requested here, and even if he didn’t, what Eren says while in Titan form foreshadows the future. Hinting that Eren is sending memories from the future.
@@freedom8163 actually Isayama has come out and said he didn't like the final fight of Season 1

Dude like you are the best. I used to watch your fma and avatar videos. I was both sad and unsatisfied when I finished your video stocks but then you came up with another video about one of my favorite anime series. Damn this is going to be an entertaining 30 minutes
Looking at Season 1 changes / additions, I am incredibly impressed on how many of these have naturally and organically fit into overall themes of story, including future events with recent manga chapters on top. As someone who has started reading manga after first season of anime ended I am pleasantly surprised on which scenes specifically were anime exclusives. This just shows how good of a writer Isayama is as well as how deeply well understood the source material was by anime staff. I am quite curious though if these changes were consulted with manga author beforehand or not. If the latter is true, even more kudos to the adaptation.
I am very interested on your thoughts on Seasons 2 and 3. While I love season 1 to death, I had mixed feelings towards further adaptations, especially in light of the first part, which set the bar way too high for sequels (fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it).
I think that Isayama is extremely involved in the production of the anime so many things don't go on without his say so.

Erin's English voice actor is so good. The emotions in his voice really make me feel what he feels. I believe it
The art is better in the anime but a lot of stuff from the Manga has been left out in the anime.
Yeah they've left more stuff out as it's gone on, which I'll be sure to touch on in future parts of this series.
Can't wait for the Comparison for Season 3. Thank you for comitting to this series of yours.
The conversation Annie has with Marlo foreshadows to Marley in the manga at least
I very rarely like a video before watching it but Lowart covering Attack on Titan? Immediate like
After watching Gurren Lagann I dead ass thought Eren did die so Armin could be the Simon of the series as Simon is also the narrator of Gurren Lagann, not only that Eren is hot headed like Kamina thinking with his heart rather than his head and even admits that he needs Simon to pull him back to reality when ever he thinks he can win an unwinable fight, so when Eren came back in episode 7 I was like "Fuck really, like yeah it was obvious but like it was too obvious I didn't want to believe it. what now people can turn into titans, shit are all titans humans, no they can't be..... can they?"
I remember accidentally running across episode 1 on youtube when i was younger when the show first started up and was immediately into the series
Nice vid
As an anime only keeping up with s4 I find this video very cool lowart, very cool.

It’s amazing to me that Armin as the narrator is something out picked up on. The funny thing is it serves a serves an interesting purpose in season 4 too.
Like your FMA videos, very interesting, allbeit it rather subjective.
another great video from you man I have seen all your other videos like this and this one is by far the best I look forward to you covering the other seasons if it is going to be as good as this I remember back when I first watched this not being that impressed by it considering the hype but then the pendulum swung back in terms of popularity and people started bashing it and I also don't remember it being bad it was only then that I came to realize how good it was even if it didn't live up to hype which let's face it almost nothing does but that doesn't have to mar an excellent and well made show such as this

I had to stop at "It is I, Spoiler Arlert"
Not to avoid spoilers, but because I couldn't stop myself from laughing, and I needed to breathe.
Great video! Can't wait to see more discussions and change comparisons of the next seasons.
I might not agree with your with the last point. In the manga, Eren being determined and acknowledging that he has to fight Annie on his own felt more impactful to me, than being stabbed in the body and losing his humanity in the process. The berserk Eren mode in the end seemed more like a hyped moment made to please and excite viewers, we never see his titan this way and it feels out of place.
Also in the end, anime only showing Mikasa being with Eren and not his other friends sitting next to the bed talking seemed dismissive of them. Minor change, but it felt unnecessary.
The down-pitching of the dialogue in the scene between Erin and his mother makes it sound like a scene from Bob Team Epic and that's hilarious
Good timing. Have watched anime but not read manga, and have had a friend asking me if it matters what he starts with.
I knew there was some restructuring at the start, but having it detailed is making me insist he at least starts with the anime season 1, then he can continue watching or reading whichever is convenient for him. Those first impressions are pretty important, and since he's been apprehensive of the hype and him avoiding it so long, wanna make sure he's going in the ideal way.

You could easily argue that Manga-Eren not having that much time befor dying was the point. Making it seem like it doesn't make sense in order to throw people off. "This can't make sense... right? It's too obvious? Or is it thought around a few corners? So yeah: subjective.
