Thanks for sharing! I'm actually in the planning stages and have to decide between early August or early September. I figured September is probably better and your video confirmed it :) I do hope to see the northern lights though, this would be the main reason (even though we've seen them before).
Interesting pespective. !Thanks for that. The lights and the contrast were extraordinary. I liked it. The risk factor is the weather. I mean I can bear cold weather but I like landscapes and views. The argument with aurora is for me challenging because I like that long day as well. I visited Iceland in June and enjoyed that amazing long days very much. Thank you Jan!
Thank you! I know what you mean, me personally I really enjoy these long days, too. Midnight sun is just so amazing. And also June usually has more stable weather, it's only northern lights that's missing - that's why now I always recommend September if someone asks me what month they should choose, because I know how many people travel here only for the northern lights themselves. But then I always mention ,,it always depends''.. 😀
Your videos are so helpfull! I went to Iceland in april 2018 but now I'm planning to go back next year with a friend who has never been. We were thinking to go in october but this video makes me think to go in september instead. Thank you so much for the information!
I'm glad you found this helpful! I think it just all come down to weather. This September we got a lot of rain by the end of the month, then a lot of rain and snowstorm in the mid October, but now we've been enjoying sun for over a week. Every year is different, but generally September is more warm and has more stable weather than October in my opinion. Either way, it's ,,just a bit of rain'' you'll still have the best time ever!
Great video!
What do you think about the month of April? Planning a trip for next year, but maybe I should change it to September!
Jan, great video. My favorite is August because of Culture Night, pride week and parade, and great weather! So many sunny days. I was there from late July to late August (and another August a few years ago). However Iceland is great any time. What a special country, so much to do always, and wonderful people. Everyone should go at least once.
Thank you! Yes, summer months are great here, too and with a little bit of luck, the weather can be very pleasant as well. I like it here at any time of the year, however I don't usually recommend people to visit from November till end of January if they only have few days to travel here. Nights are long and weather tricky 😀
@@janiniceland That is good advice; the winter months can be brutal - if you also take into account how dark it is. My daughter and I visited once again last December, right around solstice, because I wanted to see what it was like with only 3 hours of daylight. That really was intense, and our plan was to only be in Reykjavik. Even though there was a huge snowstorm, and as you know, the streets and sidewalks aren't cleaned up, we still had a magical time.
You are 100% correct. My favorite time. Already making plans for next year.
It is such a beautiful time of the year. Hoping for a very sunny September 2024!

If you're visiting Iceland in September for the northern lights, just keep in mind that it's going to be rainy, so there is a chance for the sky to not be clear at all. We travelled last month for 8 days and even though the sky is clear during the daytime, it somehow gets stuffed every single night. Never got to see the northern lights from land, but got a good glimpse from our flight, above all the clouds.
that's true. sometimes though, it's worth watching for them even when it's cloudy, but one needs to patient, watch forecast closely and know if it's a thick cloud cover or there's a slight chance of clearing. Then it is a waiting game. Sometimes all you need is an hour window, but ofc, if it's raining then there's no chance of seeing them. I've experienced very sunny September but sometimes we're lucky to even get a few sunny days. It really depends. But I'm glad you got to see them a least a little bit from the plane :)
Very Interesting... Your footage is Awesome... I want to travel to Iceland and bring my Drone (Mini 3 Pro...maybe the Mini 4 Pro if I decide to upgrade ) Thanks For sharing!
Thanks man! To be completely honest regarding the shots, I needed to use some stock footage in the video to comlete it. But anyways, regarding the drone, you’ll love it, it’s a great place for flying!
Parádička, Island miluju 🙂

Hello! We are planing our trip to Iceland in September (26 august to 10 sep) and we are wondering about the idea of sleep in a Dacia, any you recommendations? Maybe we freeze inside the car ❄️
Hey! Haha well, it is possible, but probably not the most comfortable. Are you 2? It could be a good idea to maybe bring or rent a tent here. That way you will have more space when camping and lets say weather is bad etc. Or rent a dacia with a rooftop tent. But thats more expensive. Regarding temperature and weather, well it depends. But if you're camping then have good winter clothes (video about that on my channel) and good winter sleeping bags
Jan, I'm planning a trip to Iceland in September, but I have a question. In the first week of September, is it still all green? We're lookig for that green lush landscapes. Planning to go from 30th Aug. to 9th Sept.
And what about the last week of Sept? Is it already "golden"? Thank you!
I just scrolled through my photos on my phone and it looks like the first week was still green (maybe it starts to change a colours a bit in higher elevations and certain places) and the last week of September was already more on the orange side :) But every year mother nature proves me that things can not be easily predicted and every year is different haha - but generally closer to august=more green, closer to end of september and october = more orange
@@janiniceland thank you so much, Jan! I appreciate your time to answer me :)
Hope to visit Iceland this year 🤞🏻
Hey everyone! I must clarify something - When it comes to how busy September is, it depends on where you go. You can still expect crowds at the most famous places, especially at the south coast of the island and around the ring road. More on that in my upcoming video. 🙏
Actually I disagree, May is the best time. It is the least rainy month. Snow is still on the mountains and the crowds have yet to come. Getting a rental car/van is cheaper (check for yourself) and of course flights are less expensive as well.
I know what you mean, there is a higher chance of good weather for sure but I was trying to pick the month that ,,has it all'' and unfortunately there are no northern lights in May, which is what most of the people hope to experience
Northern lights are, meh. Snow capped mountains 100% of the time guaranteed are 👍🏼.
Not when you get a strong show! I guess I prefer 24h sunlight over northern lights, too...but that's only because i've seen them so many times
We are planning to go to Iceland next October. What is the weather like then? Can you still get out and enjoy the island ? Thanks
You can check out the video I did about traveling to Iceland in October :) You never know with the weather, we've already had a snowstorm earlier this October but now it feels again more like spring.
Just recently went in October of 2023. We rarely had any sunlight. Low level cloud coverage everyday with rain and very windy. The entire northern part of the ring road from Egilsstadir to the West Fjords was already covered in snow and lots of driving in blizzard conditions. We still enjoyed our trip, but a month earlier would have been much better.
sorry to hear you experienced weather like that..was it around the beginning of the month? Here in the north of the island it started of with bad weather and snow but the last week or so we had sunny weather every day. Very hard to predict the weather here, I don't for example ever remember such a sunny end of October
@@jonathonhymel1802
but I agree that September is a bit more safer bet@@jonathonhymel1802
@@janiniceland it is still a beautiful country and we are already planning to go back, probably during august or september
Hello Brother , Which one is good to visit Iceland Early or Lately september ?
At least with the weather I think that every year is different. Late September has advantages like more autumn colors and maybe some peaks covered in snow while early September you know for sure that you will still for example spot puffins :) i think that borh is a good time and you just need to hope for some good weather 😎
