Wow, lots of misinformed comments here. First of all, it's a gala concert, so if you want to sing something you might not get to do in an opera, go ahead. Secondly, Hampson is nearing 60 here. Look up his recordings from the mid-late 90's and you'll see he is a dream marvel as Riccardo or just about any other bel canto type role. His voice is not standard cookie cutter lyric baritone, so some will not get it. But I love it, own a stack of his CD's, and he's been a favorite for decades. Look especially for the duets album with Jerry Hadley, and the German opera arias disc. Also his Cole Porter CD is delicious. I heard Mr. Hampson in recital once, and his voice was NOT weak.
I think you're being overly-awe-struck w / Hampson. Both singers are not giving the rich, resonating sounds of this scene. Hampson maybe "60" here -- ok ! but it doesn't change the shallowness of the duet & both singers are *microphoned* -- up close & visible. What would they sound like w / o amplification ?
Bravi. Ideale fu l' accompagnamento dell' orchestra sotto la direzione del mtro. Mass. Zanetti. Il solo della tromba è stato impeccabile, molto equilibrato.

The dueto is for a base and a baritone.
Which kind of fits for Mr. Pisaroni is base-baritone and Mr. Hampson is baritone.
It is true that the end of the scene is done like in the scores and not with the traditional high Aflat sung by the baritone.:)

Why 2 tenors are singing this duet?
Of course in the original 'Puritani Quartet' this was duet for two basses whereas this is done with two baritones. But these guys are tall enough! Hampson is I believe 6'5"and Pisaroni may be even taller.

If Pisaroni is classified as a "baritone" & his "baritone" is so weak, wouldn't he be an underdeveloped baritone ? Where is the upper-register in his voice that would imply he's an "underdeveloped tenor" ?

due vocalità poco adatte à questo capolavoro,mi spiego.
i tenori degli anni 1958 avevano delle voci di colore più scuro di questi ragazzi.
qua sentiamo due vocalità ibride che nella mia giovane vita appartenevano al tenore corto.
questi ragazzi cantano con la corda del tenore corto un repertorio scritto per le voci del basso vero e il baritono vero.
è così semplice.
entrambi sono semplicemente inascoltabili.
non mi piace affatto.

Consoliamoci... come la maggior parte degli spettatori d'oggi anche l'edwige si interessa piu del naso e dei mustacchi di un cantante - non della voce.. e qui si capisce.. alla fine Pisarone è un bel latin-lover... come anche D'Archangelo... Schrott... Schuen... e tutti sti fighetti della lirica attuale... ;-)))
Leo Ploner Ah beh se la mettiamo così mi pare che Corelli, Del Monaco e tanti altri dell'epoca erano begli uomini ma non passò a nessuno per la testa di non criticarli o lodarli in basi ai reali meriti artistici. Il fatto é che il mondo attuale, molto mediatico e poco analitico, guarda più all'apparenza che alla sostanza... Si fanno salti mortali carpiati per quel giocoso trio che si chiama Il Volo e che presenta tre simpatici giovanotti che hanno voce gradevole ma il solo merito di cantare in modo stentoreo lanciando acuti da loggione. Ripeto simpaticissimi ma il loro solo merito é, forse, quello di avvicinare i giovani alla lirica, ma attenzione, avvicinar é la base e se non é solida si ischia di non approfondire e quindi di diventare pubblico da festa bandistica... La lirica merita di più e di meglio...

Questi sono due simpatici " lazzaroni" passatemi il termine 😜 belli bravi simpatici e attirano l'attenzione del pubblico femminile certo. Vanno in giro a cantare assieme sono affini e molto amici. Ma non crediate che tra loro si lascino passare. Se il don Giovanni lo danno ad Hampson pisaroni è gelosetto e se ne sta sul suo leporello e zitto.

Hampson never had much of a top and Pisaroni is inflating his otherwise rather modest instrument. Holding his arms out away from his side might give him a psychological boost but it doesn't do anything for his sound.
