Love how even the actor playing as the professional prize fighter clearly didn’t have any idea how to box in real life. And Hoss, who clearly doesn’t have any formal training or prior experience was still able to defeat said professional boxer.
Hoss did the same when he was a teenager and would have won then if the pro boxer wasn't cheating. Used an iron bar to fill his hand and make a fuller harder fist. His dad Ben spotted the cheating and stepped in to fight the pro boxer in Hoss's place. Ben tore him up good, won the fight and refused the prize money.

I'm not sure the Duke threw the fight, but I do think he realized he needed his manager/brother in order to succeed. Hoss made a smart move in that last round, when he crowded the Duke on ropes. That prevented the Duke from using his jab, and allowed Hoss to pound on the body.
