- As Professor Layton and the Curious Village celebrates its 15th birthday, we take a look back on how it revolutionized puzzle games and its legacy through time.
I've never used a DS emulator before, so that was an experience. If anyone has tips to make that go smoother, let me know.

I love how that when shit really hits the fan, Luke will actually acknowledge how absurd recieving puzzles is by saying "is this really the time for a puzzle?"
When I was getting my ADHD diagnosis I had to do a bunch of tests to measure my short term memory, attention span and all. When we took a break I joked that the minigames reminded me of PL and the doctor wrote that down which I thought was odd
She only brought it up at the end of the diagnosis process weeks later at which point she was like: «Yeah those puzzle games probably trained you to apply reasoning and focus even though your neurological system would struggle more with that than the average person" so it's entirely possible that my entire school experience would have been hell had I not been so obsessed with PL that my brain was forced to adapt and apply those skills it should have underdeveloped to real life, pretty neat

I only need to hear 2 seconds of the Professor Layton soundtrack and I'll immediately burst into tears 😢 These games defined my childhood and was the first time I understood what it meant to get completely lost in a fictional world! Can't wait for more of these videos!
professor layton was MY GAME as a kid. just had my girlfriend play the entire series, and i’m graduating with a bs in mathematics this may - all thanks to the good prof. definitely looking forward to the rest of this series !!

that puzzle by the lake in the theme park thats like "find a perfect five point star" will haunt me forever. the amount of anxiety the repetitive puzzle theme gave me when i struggled with it. the soul crushing INCORRECT sound effect that seems to blast into your ears louder than any other sound effect in the gave. the shame you feel when the professor tilts his hats in embarrassment that you got the puzzle wrong. traumatising. anyway, love this game its my favourite game series ever
I had the same experience with the ferry puzzle in the theme park area in Curious Village. Terrifying. My first time playing it, can’t wait to play the others!
Level 5 was such a great studio who packed every game with charm.
Im really saddened to see them shut down their North America operations, and cancel the planned localization for Yokai Watch 4.
Its doubtful Nintendo will purchase them as Nintendo doesnt even own Gamefreak, HAL Laboratories, or Sora Ltd. and they rarely buy studios

Man professor layton had such an amazing ambience combined with story and music. I swear to this day tears in my eyes from some of the soundtracks esp eternal diva the movie had GREAT soundtracks. Story wise I loved unwound future, that plot twist had me shook to the core

I've always adored the atmosphere in St Mystere, and thought it was a great start to setting up the Layton aesthetic. While Pandora's Box has always been my favourite - and the opportunity to explore a real-world Folsense would be a dream come true - I'd love to be able to explore the winding streets and attractions in St Mystere. Even between CV and PB, the artstyle got a bit more refined, so I think Curious Village gives us the most authentic view into what Hino and his team really envisioned for the series. Wish I could play it again without knowing any of the twists.
Also, great to see I'm not the only one who loves the sliding puzzles too! Still do them on my phone to pass the time on my breaks at work!
Forget Universal's Super Mario Land, when do we get our own Professor Layton Theme Park? Folsense would be lots of fun to explore both on and off the you-know-what, and St. Mystere would be impressive, too, if not for just the architecture of the tower. I also think Monte D'Or's non-feasible metropolis in a desert would make a nice couple evenings.
Also really really really cannot emphasize how thankful I am for you uploading all the cutscenes, these would literally not be possible without you so thanks for everything you do in and for the community, you're an inspiration.
I would argue this was the best puzzle game made, we loved this game as kids. We could only afford one copy so we used to share this one copy we had, round the family, giving it to my cousins or auntie etc for a month then sharing it with someone else and we all loved it, I have the best memories playing professor Layton with my cousins and sharing it with the rest of our family 😊😊
18:21 It's been ages since I played the games but I can still remember that exact feeling. Knowing that I wasn't talking to real people really took me to some kind of uncanny valley where the town seemed much eerier than before. However, it's almost nothing compared to what I felt after finishing The Diabolical Box. I mean, at least Saint Mystère really exists the way we see it! ;)
This game is what kept me bringing my ds along to every stage of my life and collect every game in the series. Such a comfort to me since it hits everything I love, puzzles, quaint stories amid fantastic settings, sincerity, heck even animal companions
You can actually download the daily puzzles! During the pandemic I read somewhere (a forum maybe) how to connect your console with the SSID code, and I downloaded ALL the daily puzzles of the 4 first games. I CRIED WHEN I DID IT.

Played through CV for the first time at the age of 21 and some of those puzzles were Hard. Ngl I ended up looking up the solutions for quite a few. But also ended up foisting the game off on my parents or siblings to have a go before I looked it up. Sometimes, my dad would work it out and then somewhat excitedly show me the solution coz “that was a pretty clever one”. Its kinda incredible how a 15 year old game can still bring ppl together like that
If you played the first 3 seconds of any Professor Layton song, I could hum the whole thing for you. This series means so much to me.
I've played this game so much as a kid that even now that i'm in my twenties i still remember some of the puzzles. Replaying the game is always fun, and having learned the answers to the first puzzles by force of habit doesn't take away the challenging aspect of them. Waiting to one day go "This reminds me of a puzzle" just like the professor!

I've been playing the Professor Layton games lately, having recently completed Lost Future and Spectre's Call, this video is just what I needed and I hope you do the other games, the Eternal Diva movie and Phoenix Wright Crossover
The professor layton games have so much soul and love poured into them and that's why I love the game

This was such a great entertaining video! And about what you said on the puzzles, honestly same, I thought I could never beat them because I was a dumb ten-year old but no, I am nineteen now and STILL CANNOT do that damn match stick puzzle. Also as someone who experienced the European box art, it's looks so much nicer than the US/Japanese versions imo.
The music for professor layton, all games has stuck with me for easily over 10 years. It's probably the only game that has stuck with me for so long, and the music is just...so beautiful.
I was introduced to this series through my mom who LOVES these games. She was sad when she heard there wasn’t any more plans to make more games.

It blends the two things I love the most and does it in a really fun way with a charming world and characters.
I regularly listen to the OSTs and feel nostalgic about the games.
I truly am glad to have played the games and hope that you cover the rest of the games (especially unwound future) in later videos :)
For me the Robot thing made it hard to get into a second playthrough, even after about 6 years, as you can never forget something as big as that
I remember seeing a giant display for this game at Walmart while out with my aunt, and she got a little excited telling me about it (I would've been just turning 9 and she would've just recently turned 17) and I actually got the impression it was the latest in an ongoing series
I got the game for Easter, and my aunt ended up playing with me a lot when babysitting me and my sister (5), and I also vividly remember bringing my DS to play during my sister's dance class and letting my mom play during my class (Mom said she wasn't interested, but then showed me the paper she'd been using to work through the puzzles after i finished my class)
This series honestly still means a lot to me, and I'm forever amazed and grateful for how well it's thrived (even if i still get blank stares when mentioning it to people)
I was maybe, 7, 8 years old when I played this while driving in the car with my mom. I came to this video to figure out the story and to put it simply... Very Bittersweet in many different ways
Currently four games in and Curious Village is still my top favourite of all the Layton stories!
It made the most sense to me, had a great relatively tight story and a good heartfelt resolution. The sequels to me could never recapture this exact magic...

I was obsessed with this series as a kid, they were the first games that really challenged my brain. They were also the hardest games for kid me. Really should play them again after all these years, especially with the new Layton game recently announced.
I just watched all videos you have on professor layton and I'm looking forward for the next installment! One of my favorite childhood DS game that only me and my family played together as a kid!

Professor Layton was the first game that showed me video games can have a good plot actually. Before this I only played flash games and garbage game versions of movies. The Professor introduced me to quality video games.
I was smiling throughout the entire video! This franchise means so much to me, I am so glad to see that there are people who still care about it like I do. The story, characters, music, visuals and all are just wonderful!

I begged my parents for years to get a nintendo ds. I remember the Christmas I finally got one together with this game so vividly even though this was over 13 years ago. I instantly fell in love with this game but some puzzles were way to hard for me so my parents started to help me solving them (and started to love it too haha). Thanks for bringing back those memories. :)

I agree, after I discovered the plot twist, it felt really eerie and disturbing to go back and to talk to the npcs.

As cheesy as it may be, these games literally taught me how to read and defined my childhood, so much so that it remains a go to comfort game for me. This series means so much and it’s beautiful how the first in the series seemed so humble and quaint in comparison to how Level 5 is today.
My first one was The Lost Future because the Ads looked great! But i was also 8 years old at release so to say the game was too difficult was an understatement. Instead I'd play it together with my older sister, sometimes asking our mother for help. She does those mental puzzles along with crossword puzzles everyday for hours but even she was often stumped.
I remember that a Puzzle around a key in someone's office stopped me from finishing it. 4 years later i finished it with a walktrough and still cried.
A few days ago i homebrewed my 3DS and have started playing through all the games by release order! I hear the puzzle solving music in my ears even when I'm noz playing

this game is the best- the reveal of the true nature of the town residents left me Shook in an existential way i had never felt before as a 12 year old- and i absolutely cried at the end when they drive away and everyone sees them off

I've played this one and unwound future SO MUCH! Those two and brain training give me such comfort, I cant even imagine who I'd be without them.

okay but another severely underrated game that i never see anyone talk about is 'time hollow'. i love the storyline in it, and the opening theme is ingrained into my memory
Heard of Professor Layton and the love for the series, but I wouldn't be able to play it until the original trilogy were ported to mobile. I got to play "Mystery Room" prior. All of them left an impression, and I understandably had an appreciation for all four games (including MR) from the characters to stories and music. Gameplay too.
Hope "Professor Layton and the New World of Steam" does get released eventually, and they shutting down their North American office won't spell trouble for more future titles. Although, Level-5 may have an upcoming event on November 29th, so let's see.

Love love loved all the Layton games so far. The atmosphere is so fun. I love the mystery aspect. I remember when we got the first one on DS, my mom, dad and myself would love to discuss the more difficult ones together. Lotsa good memories there.
It really did change everything, I used to shit standing up and chew drinks before this game.
I played these games when I didn't understand most english words. I was stumped on pretty much every puzzle, it was super fun.

I really fell in love with this game series. I was in my early 20s when I got my pink DS lite and this game just scratched an itch for me. Between these, Ace Attorney and Pokemon, I was never bored for a moment. I adored that thing. I recently got the first trilogy for my Samsung tablet- they redid them in HD for mobile a while ago I guess. I got Katrielle first and while it’s better on mobile than Switch it still isn’t good. The first 2 trilogies are just something else. I loved the 3ds games and can’t believe what the physicals are reselling for now. Thank god for cfw.
I didn't play this game as a child because I heard the music when someone else was playing it and it creeped me out. Especially the puzzle music.

I'm a newer person to the franchise(Found it on February 28th, with a channel covering the AA crossover), and I may not have known these games during my childhood, but it's just so good to see someone else cover them on present times! This series has a charm that got me hooked into it pretty easily, and the writing from these games is incredible!
I'm still going to hope for a new game, even if the chances are slim. Sadly not many people know of this franchise's existance, but I sure hope other people find it! Seeing if I can get the 4th entry (Last Specter/Spectre's Call) to my DS soon!

i just love this game so much. tearing up right now at 3am. 19 now, and 7 when i first played this.
The brief instance of Skaijo's Luke at 3:55 made me spit my milk out.
I remember back when I got a DS in 2008 or 9, my folks literally only bought me learning and puzzle games. This, Brain Age, My Word Coach, Tetris and stuff like that. This was far and away my favorite title, even though 10 year old me had a tough time solving the puzzles. 12 years later I see they got Layton on the Play Store and I decided to pick it back up. I gotta say, some of those puzzles are still just as brutal. Thankfully this time I've got Internet.

I remember when I first got the game, I was 10 years old and got it for Christmas. I was so into it that I played it non-stop and finished it in three days, my love for the Professor Layton serie was born on that Christmas of 2007. I played all games, finished them all in 3 days to 1 week (coughAzranLegacycough), I recently got myself a new 3ds and bought Curious Village again, finished it in 9.FREAKING.HOURS 😂, replayed Miracle Mask (my fav after Pandora's Box) and finished that one in 17 hours a a half.
I remember when I was a kid at my local Walmart either had a demo of the game on their DS or stuck the cartridge in because I remember standing there, playing the game what felt like a while, and instantly falling in love with it because of the art alone.
Even my mother started playing the game after I got about halfway through the series.
did you know there's fifteen extra puzzles after you finish the game?
three for beating all the main mode puzzles, three for beating each of the minigames, and three for beating those previous puzzles. same thing applies for the second game too

Played this game the whole summer w my grandma and great aunt, i took me a month to solve the las enigma. Also that mysterious sound effect and the guy sneaking around at night really terrorized me
I just finished the first game yesterday, and it was great. I'm no stranger to the series as I was super aware of it as a kid and really wanted to play the series myself. My first PL game was actually the AA crossover, and even though I got that game specifically for PL, I ended falling into the AA rabbit hole and played those games instead throughout my childhood lmao
Now I'm in college and I'm finally going through the series I've been wanting to since I was kid and I imagine it's only going to get crazier from here. Also, I can NOT get enough of PL's theme, it slaps so much

I have a homebrewed 3ds and, Lets just say I Got myself every game in the series. All 4 ds games and the 2 3ds titles (i dont count layton x ace attorney to be a layton game. also i dont count the switch title to be a proper layton game) My first ever professor layton was curious village. I remember seeing gameplay ina n ad or something and me as a person who loves riddles wanted that game. Second game I had was Lost future/unwound future. I got decently far in both games but never completed any of the games. Today I decided to stsrt playing all professor layton games in launch order. meaning going from village to box to future to mask (already started mask) and lastly the azran legacy. To cut it short, once I booted village, The title screen got me smiling wide from nostalgia. Disnt expect that some riddles (and very interesting stories) can be so nostalgic 10+ years into the future. the games truly are all in themselves great and no one lacks in story or bad riddles. Yes you guys can argue in the comment section under this comment hoe this and thst mainline game is bad but for me, I lpve riddles and how they are inplemented in the story. And oh my god, I dont know any game with sucj interesting stories that get you invested. So, For me pf layton is an (almost) perfect genre. What I dont need tho is these pesky minigames, Indont wanna waste my time solving car riddles for hours. Minigames are the only thing I hate about the games tho.
what a great video - it really encompasses what has continued to make professor layton a staple in my life even long after the games released. i played the first four games alongside my brother and mum (with a little help from the internet, also courtesy of my mum since me and my brother didn't know how to use the internet or, really, the computer) which, looking back, is an experience i could never get nowadays.
also i agree, the sliding block puzzles slap. never got why everyone dislikes them so much.
This is what's so lovely about Layton. Because of when it released a lot of people relied on older siblings or parents to help solve some puzzles, rather than just quickly googling it. In a way we all have that collective experience/memory. I used to have my step dad help me with the maths problems - i was 9 at the time and he was an accountant, so made sense that Pythagoras' theorum was lost on me.
Really really huge thank you for this video and the Tragic Tale of Professor Layton video. I love the series and am so so so sad that the last game (Katrielle's Mystery Journey) turned out as it was (Although the last chapter blew my whole mind but the rest is just... You know what I mean...).
This video here was filled with nice and great humour and showed me some cool new things about the game and let me feel strong emotions during the part where you talked about the end of the game where the music, you know what I mean, plays and Hersh and Flora build the paraglider. I am so nostalgic for the series - I guess too nostalgic - but it just feels right to be so because the games are masterpieces.
Thank you for your passion for the series and both videos. I really hope you will make more videos about the other games of the main story and maybe the movie and the spin-off because - come on - it would be a high quality throwback to my childhood. My love to Hersh and Luke is so very deep I hope at least I can show my kid the games some day when I have one and let him feel the same.

My mum bought it as a gift for my dad (they would borrow mine or one of my sibling’s DS’ to play it)
One day I decided to try it, and got hooked on the series.

Ahh yes, one of my favorite childhood games that i can't remember anything of. But I loved it.
This video brought me back!! I remember not playing Pr Layton when it came out because I also thought it was for kids and it would just be about puzzles. Damn I was wrong! my jaw dropped when we learned what really were the villagers, I didn't expect such a serious twist!

My favourite moment in the game is in Gant's bar.
When a person (robot) complain about a puzzle then he gives you the puzzle and it's literally 50% change to get it right or wrong!!!!!!

Most PL games have roughly around 150-160 puzzles in game (plus an additional 15 from the special puzzles in the bonus section from completing every minigame + all puzzles) so that's neat! The game also has roughly 250 - 300 hint coins depending on what game you're playing ehe yes I've done completion runs and probably played the game far too many times, the puzzles haunt me in my sleep I tell ya but I cannot for the life of me let the franchise go cause I absolutely love the story lines and the music T T worth it, it was basically my childhood until now
