I'm honestly surprised that Emily and Edward never had an episode together. They're both very similar. Both are wise , both are kind , both are not afraid to tell others off when acting like idiots. And both are like parentally authority figures. Her whole over arcing character through the entirety of the series is: Newbie who was never meant to be anything more than secondary becomes an established member of the gang with her own special job and place in the world. It’s just… so perfect. I honestly wanna say it’s on par with RWS Gordon’s character arc but we all know that’s pushing it a bit. (But I don’t care ITS BETTER IN FACT-!)

I agree with you. She is kinda like a mother, Emily was always one of my favorite characters. When I first seen her appearance as a kid, I instantly began to like her. * My personal favourite Emily is the HiT Era version.
    * Edward is the "carer" for the Steam Team, he's the one that gives all the advice. I feel making Emily a motherly figure takes away Edward's literally only character trait.
    * Likewise, Gordon and Henry have mostly developed beyond their grouchy, bossy nature of the early seasons, whereas James hasn't, so I think pairing James and Emily, two bossy engines, would be a great character dynamic.
    * Similarly, all the female diesel characters up to her introduction are introduced as really bossy, so making Emily equally bossy provides a nice foil to that, shows that it's not just the female diesels that are rude and act in their best interests.

While I can definitely see the love for this character, she mostly suffers from being the most inconsistent from the main cast. She was consistently good in S7 but other than that her roll fluctuates from being understandable, to boring, to frustrating. I don't think Emily's an awful character overall, it just sucks at the writing team barely had anything to write for her later down the road.

I think Emily would have been a great character to feature in bwba instead of Thomas, she could want to learn more about the world and help people, this could also be a good way of her being a search and rescue engine with her wanting to continue helping people. It also solves Mattel wanting to put a focus on female engines by giving one a special. Either way I truly love Emily’s character.

As bad as the whole "Emily replaced Duck" fiasco was, it had more ground to stand on than the drama with Edward, Henry, Nia and Rebecca.

    • @supergenesisstation1991

At least we got to know emily before she was a main character. Duck was already sidelined in seasons 5 and 6. He didn't have anything significant to do, so to blame and hate emily for his treatment is dumb. The situation with Edward and Henry being replaced by nia and rebecca is rightfully warranted because Edward and Henry are 2 out of 3 legacy characters that kicked off the railway series which is the basis for the tv series since 1984. Replacing 2 legacy characters with two randos that we didn't have much time to get to know (who didn't have any character to them to begin with) for brownie points is more understandable to be angry at than getting angry over duck being "replaced" by emily.

Ever since S8, nobody had any clue how to use Edward and Henry. So much so that they degraded them down to flanderised versions just so they had a reason to be there:
      - Edward was always "I'm too old to be really useful".
      - Henry was back to needing special coal.
Even the S17-20 writers struggled with them too. To which they opted to have them be secondary characters, so they could include them when they wanted to, rather than cause they had to.

Maybe this is why Edward seemed to hold on a bit better in BWBA, still getting speaking roles or little moments of importance. He actually gets an episode with Nia, Hunt the Truck, which downplayed the feel that she had replaced him. Like Duck, it felt like he could have co-existed with their newer counterpart if the writers held on to him.

This video finaly made me realize why out of all the Thomas characters from my childhood, I recalled The Scottish Single herself more vividly than anyone else, with the runner up being Edward. Due to the hit era being, well overall as dumbed down and crap as it is, along with some other personal reasons and finding Thomas himself, the face of the show, to be kinda insufferable, I ended up hating the show and my memoires of it for many, many years. Except from Emily. It was mainly her season 7 depiction that spoke to me, but also in some ways her hit era self as well. To me Emily is the mother of the steam team, just one who trends towards tough love, along with being witty, a bit bossy, and taking exactly zero shit from anyone. I actuly dropped off from the show right as the CGI series started, so I never knew she FINALY got her number 12, and im really glad she did. However I do agree with it looking off, and I know exactly why, its the coloring. The brighter of the two colors doesn't match her gold lining, meaning it messes with her overall theme, if it was changed to match it would look perfect.

Her caring and compassion is pretty unmatched in her earlier season. I also like her basis, for me, the Stirling Single is the most elegant class of locomotives ever put on rails.
Kinda shame that the creator made her in a wrong way when they took her in different directions during HiT era and CGI. I mean, really, if they really wanted to put a flaws into her, they could have took the ideas from real basis such as poor braking power, oscillating at high speed, lack of traction, etc. which effects her confidence.

But I'm gonna have to go forth with Classic Emily because she is such a sweetheart that makes me wish they stuck with that character for the remainder of the show. HiT and later CGI Series Emily just doesn't seem good to me. Also, even though I'm not a fan of Emily's Best Friend, I have to agree that it could've worked better as a HiT era episode to give Emily more development when she moved to Tidmouth Sheds in the newly-formed Steam Team.
One thing that could've possibly bring another flaw into Emily is the fact that since the actual Stirling Singles are prone to wheelslip due to their large driving wheels, this would've made better potential. The official sources of Emily claim that her big wheels make her fast, though it is most inaccurate considering most flaws are based on real events and locomotive incidents in performance.

I've always looked at Emily's Adventure as her trying to get to Farmer McColls for the lambs/sheep. Her motherly nature is aimed towards the Animals that need the barn roof fixing. She knows the longer it takes her, the longer the barn will be unusable by the sheep/lambs. So she's being bossy but it's still coming from a Place of love/caring.
Also I agree with the Emily's best friend criticisms. Even if they paired Rebecca and Nia together and James and Gordon, it would have felt more natural to me. But at least we got to see her with Henry and Edward and oddly Marion.

Season 7 Emily is by far the best. Had it been explored a bit more prior to Season 8 it easily would've ended up being her definitive character: Kind, Compassionate & Motherly, only ever being strict when reprimanding those who are being silly, just like any true motherly figure would be.
Granted the Hit-Era stays consistent with her doing things out of love and concern for everyone, but basically they just swapped out the motherly side of her for a more pompous one instead, always acting like she knows better. From the writers POV i honestly think they took the phrase "mother knows best" and just dialled that up to 100 whilst now making Emily come off as more unintentionally bossy rather then caring & polite. Then of course there's the Brenner Era which thankfully retains her caring, motherly side of her original personality again... but instead of being bossy they ditch it entirely and created a whole new side to Emily where she now just feels randomly insecure, with no real arc or explanation as to what makes her suddenly lack confidence.

Emily being basically removed in the CG era was due to some 'diversity' need. Sad as that is to say. Part of the issue with the character at that time, is Emily's character is basically white. She's presented as being Scottish, and as a result of that, it was perceived that the entire main 'steam team' were all white characters. To counter this, they removed her and introduced Nia, the Kenyan locomotive. Ironically, this did them no favors, as even supporters of her inclusion noted that she was extremely problematic herself. For one, she was 'stereotypical' African, and didn't really stand out in any one way. What's more, they noted that it didn't make sense to remove an existing and established female character like Emily, only to insert another one. There was even some argument that Nia and Emily could have made an interesting duo. With Emily's motherly and established nature providing a perfect foil to Nia's experiences on Sodor, and in dealing with all the male characters. Ironically enough, it's the lack of Emily, and the forced feeling nature of Nia that has made her (nia) so hated.
Very late edit to note: One other aspect of Nia that makes her one of the more disliked characters, is a more technical aspect that I didn't include with the first post of this some months back. Nia is a narrow gauge engine. Specifically, she's a "cape gauge" locomotive. So roughly 42 inches. This also caused some issues with the character, as many felt that including her was harkening back to the UK's problematic colonial period. In fact, in Kenya, where she originated from, that gauge was more properly called "Colonial Gauge", as it reflected the British colonizers who built railroads in Africa, as opposed to "cape gauge" which originated (name wise) with South Africa.

I'm gonna be real honest, emily is definitely getting overhated nowadays, besides even when some of her flaws, she is still quite a good character during the seventh season, and some parts of the brenner area from cgi, so in my case, emily is quite decent and unique character to say the least in my point of view. yet again the only exceptions i would have from the Brenner cgi area would be her cgi whistle, along with a few episodes that were from the brenner. so yeah, you got some good points and facts of Emily the Stirling Emerald Engine. :)

Great Job! You really make a show of her involvement in the series. It feels a little like the Unlucky Tug, but also so original. The only issues I have are that in the first few minutes, you sounded a little to close to the microphone, and I don't appreciate swearing. but other than that, you did a really good job.

Y'know, I almost feel like "Emily's Best Friend" may have worked better if the whole James-and-Nia thing, which I agree felt totally out of left field, was actually part of the episode itself.
Here's how I imagine it - a story workshop event is being held, where children are encouraged to make their own stories, with the theme being "Best Friends". Emily laments that, after all these years on Sodor, she doesn't really know who her best friend is. In an attempt to make one, she decides to help Nia for the day and the two get along well. Soon, Nia begins to consider Emily a good friend. However, as Nia leaves, Emily notices James is in a bad mood because "all of the other engines are taken". Feeling sorry for him, Emily decides to help him out, and after assisting him, James feels like Emily truly is best friend material. Unfortunately, at that moment, Nia returns and sees what's going on. This results in an argument between James and Nia, declaring each other Emily's best friend, until Emily, flustered by what is happening, snaps at them. This results in the three falling out and Emily leaves to do another job. James and Nia are left to work in the yard, but after a short while, they begin to find they have common ground and work well together. Emily eventually sees this and, whilst upset that they may no longer consider her their best friend, is at least happy they're friends themselves. The story workshop is eventually held and one girl is inspired by James and Nia's friendship, so she decides to write a story about them. When Emily comes along later, the girl reveals that she is in the story along with James and Nia - they reveal to Emily that they put in a good word for her, stating they'd never have been friends without Emily helping them out, and the girl says she thinks this makes Emily a really good friend herself. As such, Emily is delighted that she, James and Nia can now all consider each other "best friends".

I'll be perfectly honest, I vastly prefer the HiT/Nitrogen Emily. For better or worse, the bossiness is highly relatable at least personally. I've got a hair trigger when I'm annoyed, and it doesn't take much pushing for me to blow up like she does.
Aside from personal anecdotes, it's just more satisfying to watch and write for her in that fashion: she knows what's best in a situation, but very quickly gets to her wit's end and says something she can't take back.
Plus, I'd like to try justifying "Emily's Adventure" while I'm here. -
At the beginning of the episode, the audience is given a ticking clock effect, the storm is coming back, and if the barn roof isn't fixed by the time it comes back, Farmer McColl's farm will (effectively) be in ruins. Emily is given this duty to get the barn fixed, and thanks to the rest of the HiT era, it's established that McColl is a **huge** boon to the railway, he's a super important customer.
So, Emily gets stressed out by this ticking clock, and combined with her pre-existing hair trigger in regards to annoyance, she's a lot more rude than normal, to the extent that she's exactly who we see in that episode.
It's admittedly a bit of a weak justification, but it makes sense in my own mind.
Anyway, that's my take on Emily about 2 months after the video went live.
