- Ikebukuro is one of the biggest neighborhoods and train stations in Tokyo, famous as being a university student area and the largest department stores in the world - SEIBU, TOBU - it’s worth a look and we’ll explore and see what’s up today. Where is Ikebukuro 池袋 MAP:

#onlyinjapan #tokyo #Ikebukuro
When you first came out of the exit it was West Ikebukuro. Seibu (meaning West) is in East and Tobu (meaning East) is in West. The side you wanted to go to (Sunsine city etc) was the East side.
😵💫
Station jingles and chirpy bird crossings, the sounds of Japan I miss the most
We stayed in Ikebukuro when we visited Japan two years ago, it was such a nice and busy place.
John! That guy who “helped” you also assisted me when I was on vacation in Shinjuku. He’s goes up to people who look like foreigners. He always says at the end he is hungry lol!!!
WOW! Thanks for letting me know Adina. The man is a celebrity now!
I loved that guy. I could feel his genki through my computer.
He’s making a career of escorting foreigners through Ikebukuro Station.
Ikebukuro was our home when we stayed in Tokyo. Thanks for taking us back there!
I was lost in this station a good 40 minutes the first time I arrived to Tokyo. But Ikebukuro's great.
I smiled when you served him. Both of your hearts smiled as you neared your goals. Kindness is Sublime John.
Thank you for taking us on this walk, John! I caught your livestream at the tail end but was happy I made it. I heard the word Ikebukuro here in Hawaii which was associated with a type of shopping event. Always wondered what the correlation was all about.
So simple but so good I love how u started the vid John!!!!!!❤️👊🏻🤙🏻
I’m loving all these vids your pumpin out!!!! 👍🏻
Interesting stream and getting lost is the best thing , in a good way 🤔👍!!! Thank you !!!
What a nice man to help you ....
I have not gone to Ikebukuro in a while. After looking at your stream, it has changed a lot. I plan to visit on my next trip. "Pond Bag" refers to a pond that was shaped like a bag (fukuro) located on the west side. There were lots of farms in this area many many years ago.
My first trip to Tokyo I got extremely lost in that station trying to find the west exit.
You have to get lost to get found John. Thanks for the adventure. 👍
John like fine wine you get better with age, taking us on these journeys around Tokyo and it's neighborhoods that are all unique? and yes the pandemic has hurt many of the people of japan. sadly all these shops that have closed have hurt the folks who worked at these shops that are individually owned Leaving those who worked there without a job, and no work no $$ and soon homeless!? I hope for the kind people of Japan this ends soon. and they get back to one of the best places in the world to visit! again thanks John and best wishes for both Kanae your son Leo.
That was a blast from the past! When I first went to Tokyo in November 2018, I stayed in book and bed ikebukuro which is just down the way from that Bic camera I think. The difficulty I had when I tried to get a taxi to that exit of the station with it being the west exit of the east side and a huge language barrier 😂 I remember going in all the places around there. I know it’s a small thing but it reminds me of good times before Covid and the first memories I have of visiting Japan, can’t wait to get back!
I have to stop typing and laugh for a minute when you got out at the east section, after i heard you repeatedly said wanted to go west. Your adventure is my background voice for working.
Wen I am Tokyo I always stay in ikebukuro-but I never saw the underground maze THAT empty!!! At the west exit -that’s MY Matsumoto kyoshi!,! So amazing to see it again!
I've visited Tokyo twice and my accommodation was at Ikebukuro on both stays. I might choose Ikebukuro again when I revisit Tokyo.
It’s not a bad location, but I do prefer Asakusa because it’s more cultural, but Ikebukuro sure has more kinds of people. Students and salarymen, and street wanderers! It’s never dull here!
oh, that Taiyaki looks awesome! like that awesome store. could have used some cheese though. thanks for the share. Stay awesome ....and not the store !
so funny ! my friends name translates to Excellent Tree, so that became his second name for a bit ! Pondbag !!!
John, you did a Shinichi tour in the subway lol. helping hand man so entertaining. a surprise ending so funny. great he got his lunch... 'helping hands' will know the flat cap man. smokers should be on roof tops. befitting words 'getting really sick'. yes UK calls them Jabs. good to know Japan not exempt from 'wee tiny streets' its global. a really 'interesting East West tour' today John thx again.
I've always found funny that Tobu is in the west side and Seibu in the east side! It seems like an elaborate joke to get you lost!
Ikebukuro station . ah this place . i consider Ikebukuro my home in Japan cos there is where i spent most of my time when i am in Japan . this is my 2nd home . i miss it so much btw you got out on the westside when you first got out . and also at nights when it gets past 10pm there is alot of homeless people hanging about outside the station . met so many of em at the west exit . nice nice people ..
Great for giving that you giving that guy money and he giving help where you need to go
When I lived in Toshima I spent half a day in Ikebukuro eki getting my map sorted. Ippudo Ramen on the East Exit is super delicious!
You really look like the "karate kid",so much similarity...It's so overwhelming looking at your videos...coz I love japan so much.
I do believe the owl statue is at the enterance by the hand statue .
Every time my friend goes to Tokyo, he always stays in Ikebukuro. I usually stay close to Shinjuku because of the main train station. The one thing i really like about Japan is the drink vending machines. I was way out in the boonies one time and they had a machine near the top of the mountain near Fuji. I felt bad for the guys who had to travel up there. Has Japan adopted protein drinks in vending machines yet? I really enjoy your channel. Hope to run into you when i visit next year hopefully..
I haven't seen the protein drinks but to be honest, I haven't looked for them either.
Yes, the vending machines are life savers sometimes. Convenient stores are everywhere in urban areas now so I've noticed vending machines decreasing slightly in the city. Drinks are cheaper from stores.
I am watching so many live streams ,I am getting false memories of having been to places on Tokyo that I have never ben to😮, 👍 . John, lost in Ikebukuro ...that could be a new manga 😂
Haha! When you wake up, and wonder where you are - and why it’s not Tokyo?!
That was quite a day, lost in Ikebukuro. I did make it out, alive.
Had to check out IC cards. I live in Milwaukee WI. We don't have mass transportation but just city busses that don't access much of the surrounding communities around Milwaukee. If you don't have a car, you are basically stranded. Don't think we have any sort of E-cards here either. 🤷♀️
I absolutely got lost in Ikebukuro Stn when I first visited Japan back in 2007. I thought I'd never get out! Glad it doesn't just happen to tourists 😂
That was definitely the most insane looking chili dog I've ever seen. The poster made me laugh.
East exist of the west side. What, whatie what what.
Good recovery John-san.
'They may take are sense of direction , but they'll never take are freedom.'
Ascending from the depth....
Oh John says 'oh crap'. 🙈.
West entrance of the east side. Whoa...
Only in Japan
Awesome walk and talk
Sorry spelling update 🙈
Ikebukuro was the first place i ever stayed in Japan. Its a cool area with plenty to do. Ive stayed there twice at the Metropolitan hotel and definitely recommend it. It does tho have a little seedy like atmosphere so if that bothers you maybe stay somewhere else but it didnt really bother me. Glad you did a tour of it John
Lovely memory! I had to go out through the east exit and watching one of your previous videos you made with your French friend you walked from the east exit and walked up to sunshine city which was where my hotel was! I cant thank you enough! Ha ha! I would have got so lost carrying all my luggage so you were a massive help, arigatou gozaimasu john san! This was last march 2020 but it seems just like yesterday!
i love it thank you!! i miss the IKB!
It is nice how you teach kanji at the same time when travelling! I checked the origins of name Ikebukuro. Area used to have multiple lakes, hence the name.
Kanji often tells the story of a location too! Very interesting :)
Always like your street tour. Not always to find a YT creator always has CONTENTS to go!
It’s been fun hearing you talk about more of past friends that we originally saw you vlog with! Hope you can bring them along again soon! Regards to Kanae and hugs to Leo 🥰
4:04 the "bu" in Seibu and Tobu is short for Musashi, the old province that Tokyo was part of before 1868. Just means they serve the west and east sides of Musashi, respectively.
That guy that helped you has been infamous for bothering other foreigners for money lol
That's what I thought!
Same that’s what I thought he was being targeted because he looks like he’s not from around the area and he was talking on stream.
John didn’t do anything wrong, but it’s terrible the guy trapped him like that. He knew what he was doing and it made me so mad. Acting nice and then guilt him into lunch…
It seems there were others too besides the second who bothered him. I could tell from the way they were watching him or how John seemed uncomfortable.
I’m wondering if they have a gambling addiction or something with the pachinko parlors being so close by.
Maybe they should be reported to the police? There is video evidence.
@@mrs.quills7061 unfortunately in the other cases of that man being more harassing the police did nothing to my knowledge 👀
Thanks for this. The first ever hotel I stayed in in Japan was at the Prince Hotel (with its really slow lift!) in Sunshine City. Good memories. 😌
The Beastie Boys film clip for Intergalactic was filmed in Ikebukuro station! ...around 13:20
love this street, nice walk tour indeed, big like, many thanks !
John hahahahaha that was such a New York City thing when he asked you for some change.
I thought he was just a passer by hahahaha also my last trip to Japan my family and I was at Ikebukuro everyday through transit.
Hahahahahaha
Cheers
Poppa Sam
The Nu Yorka Down Under.
29:30 for anybody who has played Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth on the ps4/Switch, this is the "Aquarium" in that game
Alright this Channel is Officially back!!!
19:48 John, you got lost because you kept saying you wanted to go to the west side when in fact you wanted to go east :) Although to be fair, I stayed in Ikebukuro 2 years ago and it is just MASSIVE!
Stayed in Ikebukuro at my first time in Japan and it took me a while to find the correct exit XD but I love this place so much also the Yakuza protect you in the evening.
At first noone wanted to tell me about those "businessman" in white shirts that are everywhere on the streets at night till someone from the Hotel was like "they are Yakuza but don't worry they protect people as long as they don't do anything wrong"
43:40 I stayed at the B Ikebukuro! Decent, cheap rooms in a good location!
Google maps is your friend John!
Hi, Glad you found your way out of the Train Station with the help of that guy who you gave some money to. Love the name of that store called the Awesome Store. Funny! Not sure if I would stay in a Love Hotel as I would have my Teenage daughter and would want to stay in a regular hotel instead. But would be good for guys and maybe couples if can't find any other place to stay. Thanks as always another video of Japan Go*
Missed the livestream. On the poster who was offended by "jab"...they would have been really offended by me because i refer to them as "stabbings". Now that people choose to be offended by everything i play it to the hilt😈
my daily sight
Oh please go to Kichijoji! I love Kichijoji! Can’t wait to go back!
Plan to sometime this month - if I can. Was 50/50 today. It’s a hike out there
Ikebukuro is my most favorite place within Tokyo :D It's so lively and fancy. + it houses the best Pokemon Center :)
41:08 nice a dollfie dream cafe really Japan have really unique and some times weird things this is more in unique for mine hobby.
池袋站然我想起来台北站,那边也很容易迷路了。
My right ear liked this
John there is no doubting your entertainment and knowledge during every live stream, but this is 2021, there are many other third party applications that will allow you to stream in 1080p.
It's a shame you haven't jumped on board with them as your videos would be so much more immersive.
So if the above comes across negative, not my intention, just want you to deliver the best quality content possible.
Thanks again for showing the world Japan.
I hear CZcams will be upgrading the app soon. Investing in third party apps is a headache and temporary. If the signal is not strong, it doesn't matter if it's 1080p. It just looks worse. It's about 5G being better integrated. If CZcams doesn't fix the app, I may jump to Twitch. The app team knows how I feel about their progress. The app still makes me take a 3 second selfie instead of upload! Compared to 2017, it's gotten better and I think it will get there. This channel has always been an "experiment" and others have jumped onto mobile live streaming but I've no doubt the tech will catch up really really soon without expensive backpacks and laptops etc.
Ikebukuro West Gate Park... Anyone?
Or am I the only 1 who knows about IWGP
I started watching that recently, the background characters on that show are hilarious
When I was in Tokyo in May/June 2018 i went one time to ikebukuro only for Mutekiya Ramen 🤣🤣
Its because your coming from the west gling east bound hense the east entrance of the west
i never lose anything john i keep everything in the same pockets my keys are on two key chains money bag and wallet in the same free pocket bus in the same pocket
"John Daub, the man of the Cash Handouts" on the loose in Ikebukuro 🤣
I have been marked!
I would take karate kid as a compliment. Ralph Macchio is handsome! and being called Jeff Bezos isn't an insult either. Don't let internet trolls bother you. Japan always has the most innovative street food. we are JUST NOW getting those cheesy corn dogs you posted years ago.
o yes you can get lost underground when i when't underground in Tokyo and just truned a few corners i got lost and almost lost the Ebike i was renting lol i had to ask so many cops where a place was so i can find it lol
getting lost at Ikebukuro or Shinjuku station are not weird at all lol
Finished watching 1:07:00
The Tokyo underground is so easy to get around on but it’s the getting OUT of some stations too many exits
Haha!! Indeed, getting out and around. I wonder which is the WORST?
John! You didn't go to Tori No Ana ramen shop! I've requested it many times with super chat! My spouse and I went there many times on our first time in Japan, it's a true gem in Ikebukuro, please check it out sometime!(fully chicken ramen, great for your kosher and halal watchers!)
If somebody asks me for money I'll just be like "Wakarimasen! Wakarimasen!" And turbo walk away.
Great livestream! I am staying in Ikebukuru for my first trip to Japan, and can not wait! This is such a great vid!
Is the Seibu line the same one that goes through Yamaguchi?
7:17 hahaha 😂
Hey John, I got my Jab in the US a few weeks ago. Hope you and your family can get y our Jab's sometime soon!
Great!! Happy to hear this Ron. Yes, I think we’ll get ours soon - 🙏
Right were I was based last time in Tokyo
Hey John, I've been to Tokyo several times but never encountered anyone asking for money. Is it common?
My first time too - on a live stream no less!
@@onlyinjapanGO I've been to Tokyo 3 times, got hassled for money once and also stopped by a girl trying to get me "to church" on a Sunday. I do believe there is a small band of people termed "Gaijin Hunters" who target foreigners. I think it is very very very rare, but of course "foreigners" are very rare at the moment so the odds of you being stopped have greatly increased. I think they have always been around (guide books even warn of them) and of course the current situation has made it worse. Great stream though, and you handled the situation very well :)
@@RobbC. always get the church people in Tokyo!
For me is weird, because i heard that the homeless don't ask money to eat, because they prefer to pick empty juice or beer cans and bottles to earn money... It' very weird... these are probably not Japanese, because the Japanese avoids to expose himself to ask for favors.... Probably
I'd like to visit Japan. The only other language I know is Spanish. I wonder how many people can speak English in Japan.
We're planning to go to Japan next year. My husband has multiple sclerosis and his mobility is affected so we're going to take a wheelchair. Your videos have been so helpful in guiding our itinerary and making decisions on what we want to see. If you can remember, can you start pointing out if/when a building is accessible? Like in the Akihabara video I was curious if theres an elevator because it seemed like it was stairs to get into the store? Maybe I need to rewatch it.
Most places have some accessibility but having elevators isn't necessarily helpful as many Japanese elevators are really small and unlikely to fit a full size motorised wheelchair.
All the major station in Tokyo esp with attractions like Akihabara are wheelchair accessible. They started making sure of this a few years ago for the Paralympics. I try to point out accessibility points and will keep at it. Ikebukuro is a busy place so best to travel before the crowds so it's more stress free (for all people) but they do have several elevators. Yesterday, I took Leo via stroller to Ginza and we had to rely on Elevators to get to street level. It took a few minutes longer but we managed :) 10-15 years ago, it was very very inconvenient!
@@uoftotaku7 This is true for stations who have older elevators but the newer ones are more spacious. On Google Maps, every station has a phone number. I always recommend calling ahead 15-30 minutes or more if you can to let the staff know. You get total VIP treatment especially during peak hours when the platform is super crowded. This is helpful for all passengers and it's great service.
I've never been lost virtually before lol
haha! It's more fun because you can also fast forward in playback if you're in a hurry!
I hope those doughnuts are regular dessert types LOL; friend of mine was living in Japan 1995 as a teacher, upon her first few days there she ordered a round doughnut she thought it was a regular jelly doughnut but turned out to be filled with fish LOL, live and learn right? 😆
Ooooh, GROSS! Imagining sweet and getting 🐠 😝
@@onlyinjapanGO yup 😆
Saeki House the famous haunted house in movie The Grudge 2004, located at 15-15 Higashichō, Tokorozawa, Saitama 359-1116 according to wiki fandom site, I heard this house was demolished few years ago, it’s not far from Ikebukuro station
Ooooh! Well, Tokorozawa is still quite far from Ikebukuro ;) I was there a few months ago to show an anime hotel.
@@onlyinjapanGO I would luv to go there sometime after travel resumes
Is there a way to record a higher quality video at the same time you're streaming to upload later? Sometimes the picture quality drops and makes it hard to see anything.
Also you and Best Ever Food Review Show should do a Karate Kid collaboration. You look like Daniel and he looks like Johnny.
Haha!! He does look like Johnny, Cobra Kai!
I’ve asked CZcams to allow for in camera recording and an upload later. I don’t know why it’s not done - the system is lousy. There is a HD UPLOAD after the stream but I don’t see the improvement. I will definitely find ways to improve the quality before the Olympics.
Thank you for this amazing tour. Is it strange for family members to rub each other in Japan, when they have health ineffectiveness.
Yay I get a post card! Thank you!! Also pls call me Ai or AiAi thank you~! I don’t really like my given name 🤣 I’m so sorry I missed the live, I’m rewatching it now~ I can’t believe my postcard got mailed out in a cute pink mail box!!! I love it! I love cute cute pink stuff! This made me so happy to see! Thank you~!
Okay! Ai *\(^o^)/* you got it!! I think it’ll get to Singapore SUPER FAST from Ikebukuro from a PINK BOX 📮 🤩
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale a tale of a lost CZcams 😂 a 3 hour tour a three hour tour
Haha!! That sounds like a challenge! A three hour tour! 😂
@@onlyinjapanGO possible but the challenge would be not getting lost lol after seeing this video 😂
I think the only way our group of friends didn't get lost is by just going for the big pokemon store in sunshine city
It helps to have a target in mind!

The man asked you some money??? I can’t believe it.
He helped John and the latter didn't mind helping him out LOL
Ikebukuro Taiyaki Chili Dock Great I have never eaten
What ist the postcard club and can one still join? :)
Sure - I'm sending the Postcards from Inside Tokyo Station tomorrow! patreon.com/onlyinjapan Taking the Shinkansen to Tohoku (Yamagata, West Fukushima and Miyagi) Thank you for asking about it! -John
You ate?
Escape the Ikebukuro Dungeon
Doesn't work like that in the smoking area John lol. Need to smoke my own to get the effect.
Interesting - so no contact buzz?! I know very little about smoking. My mind smoked as a kid and that kept me away from it as an adult because I didn’t like the smell.
@@onlyinjapanGO yeah passive smoking does not help smokers :p It's like going to a bar with others drinking and you don't drink but others do.
🤦🙄🤷Mcdonald's has melon sodas then he says that grape soda is purple yes John grape soda is usually purple in color
Usually - not always. The Fanta here is sometimes clear. Depends on the GRAPE they use.
How hot is it in Japan 🇯🇵 today?
June is usually preytty cool nbecause of the rainy season but starts to get much hotter and humid in the last few days - every year! Today, 23C and cool.
Taiyaki is shape of a fish so does that mean there is fish in your chilli dog? 😇
Jabs yes we call them in uk, i aint against them but the covid ones i refuse to have due to even if you have you still get covid and still have to cover and stuff so do not see the point of having
when i was in germany in my british army uniform i got around easy as the german people gave me directions john if i visited japan which ill never visit anywhere i would need the japanese girlfriend to take me around japan and if not i would get lost and not see all the places of interests
